This brings to mind the old Denny quote regarding the ballcapped one and karma. I won't repeat it because you all probably know it by heart.

54 years of excuses to make for this guy are 54 years too many. Yes, I know what he contributed, but he's still lost the benefit of the doubt from me, forever. And I will still enjoy the old music, but I'm taking the memorabilia down, and I'm not wearing the T-shirts in public anymore, either. A lot of people don't know the difference between the touring band and the musical legacy, and I don't need or want that association attributed to me. It's against everything I stand for as a compassionate human.

This actually makes me want to cry, because I agree with you 100 percent.

Yesterday I wore my uniqlo SMiLE shirt around the campus near where I live, and at one point a guy gave me kind of a funny look. I thought at the time that maybe he was just into the music or curious (I was blissfully unaware of the controversy yesterday), but now I wonder if he thought I could be wearing it as an act of defiance. I'm not taking a chance again.  Sad

Guys, this just depresses the hell out of me.
30  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Are The Beach Boys letting their fans down with digital only archival releases on: January 25, 2020, 11:04:23 AM
Exactly, a CD is just your lossless downloads served on a silver plate. The artwork is too small to really appreciate. With a digital download they'll often provide a high res image of the album cover which can fill up a large computer screen... bigger than your vinyl covers if you print them out on some nice quality paper!

A nice physical booklet is probably the biggest advantage to a CD release, but so few releases bother with this nowadays. CD players aren't even that easy to find any more. None of the new cars are equipped with them. I ripped all my old CDs to lossless and now play them all with ease on my high capacity portable player.

I do collect vinyl, though. That's how I scratch my physical itch when the need arises. CDs have lost their luster and utility for me.
31  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What's your favorite lead vocal from each Beach Boy? on: January 16, 2020, 09:22:13 AM
Brian: Don't Worry Baby

Dennis: Little Bird (I prefer his earlier sweeter voice)

Carl: this is so hard... it would have to be his more "mature" voice from the 70s, This Whole World or Caroline, No (live from In concert) come to mind at the moment

Mike: I Get Around

Al: You Still Believe in Me (In Concert)

Bruce: Nearest Faraway Place  LOL
32  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Sums Up Life in 3 Minutes on PBS - Does he mention songwriting credits? on: January 16, 2020, 09:13:00 AM
Mike should have just used his 3 minutes to do a cocktail lounge rendition of the song Endless Harmony with Bruce at the piano. That would have been much better, and hilarious.

I prefer Friends to Sunflower, but it is nevertheless a fine album.

Maybe the separate release of the Murry tracks should have been a clue. If we were getting another copyright dump this year, wouldn't they have just been thrown in the big pile like the past curios we've received, Audree's vocal track from last year, etc? I think this is it for 2019.
35  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: December 20, 2019, 04:35:32 AM
I think we can at least conclude what they don't want to include on a theoretical box set. Perhaps that's what we got today!

This new digital set is sure to sell a million units....... in January!!!!
37  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Murry Wilson And Snow on: December 18, 2019, 02:19:11 PM
here're 4 recent facebook comments about Snow, made by Rick Henn:
"Murry and the BBs manager put us together. One of the BBs who shall remain nameless, tried to block Souful from ever being released...Alan Boyd and Mark Linett made it happen."

I recall hearing somewhere that this was Carl, because of the vocal flub he made toward the end of the song (shunshine).

38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Murry Wilson And Snow on: December 17, 2019, 10:09:47 AM
Yes, there is a weird sub-genre of "soft" yet somewhat bizarrely arranged vocal pop that can have a kind of appeal for some... The first LP by a group called the Inner Dialogue is probably a good example of this.
39  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Murry Wilson And Snow on: December 17, 2019, 08:41:29 AM
Even though the vocals are inferior and the overall production doesn't cohere in the way that the BB version does, I think I prefer the Snow version myself. Breakaway has never been a particular favorite of mine, and this version has some chord changes that I find more interesting... I don't have any of the common hangups about the soft pop scene either. It's one of my favorite genres.
40  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Kesha featuring Brian Wilson & Sturgill Simpson - New Single \ on: December 16, 2019, 04:06:14 AM
Willie Stargell is there in the mix too, during the 2nd verse.

I find that if you pronounce the song title as a Frenchman would, i.e. "Resent-mau", the whole thing suddenly clicks into place, and Brian's role in it becomes much clearer.

Whatever happened to the Durrie Parks acetates on eBay? Been meaning to make a topic on it ..

They were purchased by a private collector, and are basically unheard other than a tantalizing snippet at the very, very tail end of Wake the World Friends set.

Last year's collection was well received despite receiving very little promotion. No need for the sky to fall... yet.

The year by year trawl through the BB vaults seems to have continued unabated... hence the Murray set coming out next friday. Maybe everything is due to drop on the 20th.
43  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: November 26, 2019, 11:55:01 AM
I neither have the appropriate technology nor the trust that a corporate entity will keep the music available (or affordable) in the long term for me to abide with streaming. I go with just vinyl and digital downloads (lossless for my favorites). CDs are an exceedingly rare purchase nowadays: only if it's a cherished boxset or if there's no other way to obtain the music. With the CDs I just end up ripping them losslessly and never playing the discs; the artwork is too small, although I will revisit a nicely assembled physical book(let) every now and then...

Wish list:

- Anything that has to do with 'This Whole World'

Yeah, I'm pretty stoked for the version of This Whole World with the alt tag that was featured very briefly in that airlines commercial they did... that seems like a real lost gem.

Wow, I've never seen that GOK performance but it's almost like it's from a parallel reality in which Brian survived completely intact. Stunning.

What is this track called?

Nice work!
50  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What did Brian contribute to the writing of \ on: January 22, 2019, 08:52:44 AM
I always thought Bruce just used the little musical phrase from Brian's "We're Together Again" (which was unreleased) and then went on to do his own thing with it.

Melodically, "We're Together Again" x 2  = "The trouble you had, it wasn't so bad" etc.
