NEW @ Surf's UP: A Beach Boys Podcast Safari with Mark Dillon (Fifty Sides of The Beach Boys) and Phil Miglioratti (Pray For Surf Blog) David Leaf is back to talk about his new book God Only Knows: The Story of Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys & the California Myth. The release includes the entirety of David's seminal 1978 book, plus its 1985 update, and most excitedly, a substantial new update that brings the story to the present. He tells us about his long-ago mission to befriend Brian and help him finish Smile; navigating Eugene Landy, Brian exorcising his demons and where he is at today, and The Beach Boys' 60th anniversary. •Hear Today ~ https://soundcloud.com/user-93394161/david-leaf-on-his-book-god-only-knows•Subscribe to my #PrayForSurfBlog eBlast ~ https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/PP0vWk6

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: New Jan Berry Biography by Mark A. Moore
|
on: October 02, 2021, 09:30:49 AM

Excerpt from Mark A Moore's amazing book on the life of Jan Berry; Deadman's Curve: Part 1> https://prayforsurfblog.blogspot.com/2021/09/mark-a.htmlI contacted Jan and his wife Gertie and got them interested in what I wanted to do, and that’s what led to Jan sharing his career archive with me. That was the first big step in acquiring the documentary evidence of Jan’s life and career. Gertie was also instrumental in securing my interview with Arnie Ginsburg. Also, in the early 2000s, surf music aficionado Stephen McParland self-published a two-volume reference set on Jan & Dean that was quite good and helpful. The more interviews I conducted, the more I was able to cross-reference them against the documentation in Jan’s archive, which included business and legal documents, and medical information, plus original session tape from Jan’s productions at United Recording and Western Recorders in Hollywood. The crown jewels among Jan’s documentation were his surviving original music charts and scores, the actual parts used by the Wrecking Crew to record the original music: brass, woodwinds, strings, guitars, basses, keyboards, drums, and percussion. These surviving artifacts are invaluable and offer concrete evidence of Jan’s intricate music arrangements. One of my next goals is to get Jan’s original charts and scores published for the benefit of interested musicians, and for posterity. Beyond Jan’s archive, I researched the studio musicians’ union contracts with the help of archivists at AFM Local 47 in Los Angeles. I also conducted a vault/tape box inventory with the kind assistance of staff at EMI-Capitol (inheritors of Jan & Dean’s Screen Gems and Liberty holdings), which at that time was in the process of being taken over by Universal.

"Battle Hymn" would presumably be in the "funny because it's bad" category. I have to say, while the BB's may individually have been funny guys in real life/in person, I've *rarely* laughed at anything they've said, done, or recorded.
I guess if beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it make sense that humor is in the ear of the hearer 😏

Drive In is a must, if only for the visual of the drive-in authorities chasing violators. Always makes me laugh. County Fair (loser!, ooooh!) is also pretty funny. And then there's Battle Hymn of the Republic.
DI and CF were both included - good choices. BHOTR? Please unpack that ...

PRAY FOR SURF PODCAST The Beach Boys "Humor Album" Phil Miglioratti and Mark Dillon (author, "50 Sides of The Beach Boys") discuss the role of humor in the Beach Boys music. Each have selected an album's worth of songs ("Monster Mash") , skits ("George Fell Into His French Horn"), and statements ("Cost too much") that put a SMiLE on your face. They approach humor as "a state of mind" that brings laughter or amusement and, in the case of the Beach Boys, allows them to poking fun, even at themselves. Mark's list includes "Chug-A-Lug" and "Johnny Carson" while Phil's includes "'Cassius' Love vs 'Sonny' Wilson" and "Vegetables." Note: Before the humor discussion, they discuss Phil's review of the 4/2/2018 Al Jardine concert (posted on PrayForSurfBlog Spoiler ALERT: Mark's and Phil's "Humor Album" tracklists are available in the comment section. Invitation: Please comment with your feedback and/or additional tracks { Rare Beach Boys videos @ www.YouTube.com/BB45s } Hear here>>> https://prayforsurfblog.blogspot.com/2018/04/podcast-beach-boys-humor-album-with.html

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Podcast with Jeffrey Foskett, Philip Bardowell, Chuck Girard, Dan Addington

"Our Prayers ~ As Inspired by The Beach Boys" Phil Miglioratti invited Jeffrey Foskett (The Beach Boys; Brian Wilson Band), Philip Bardowell (Beach Boys Band, Jan & Dean Band), Chuck Girard (Hondells lead singer, Love Song), and Dan Addington (early Dennis Wilson researcher) for a roundtable conversation on the spirituality of the music of The Beach Boys. Focusing on their personal experiences, they discuss a surprising diversity of songs that include "God Only Knows," "When I Grow Up To Be A Man," "'Til I Die," "You Still Believe in Me," "The Ballad of Ole' Betsy" (no foolin'), "Let The Wind Blow," "Walking Down the Path of Life," "God Did It," "Little Bird," "Be Still, and "Dreamer."
