28  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: American Band movie--a question about it on: July 06, 2011, 01:36:48 PM

The only references I can find of Chuck "mixing" Pet Sounds were for a stereo release in another country, four songs mixed in primitive stereo.

Any idea which country and which specific record?

When American Band came out I can remember some fuss being made that some of the included Pet Sounds tracks appeared in true stereo for the first time... Would it be correct to assume that therefore 'primative stereo' probably equates to something like 'duophonic' as opposed to 'true' stereo...?
29  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Laughing Gravy's \ on: April 07, 2011, 01:47:33 AM
The original Laughing Gravy single is available on CD on In the Garden:  the White Whale Story.  As far as I know this is the only place you'll find it.
The remake is the same track/lead vocal with backing vocals by Brian and Marilyn and who knows who else, and I assume the backing vocals are what Brian "produced."

It's also on the Japanese CD "I Still Dream Of You: Rare Works Of Brian Wilson" (MMCD-409).

By comparison, I think the track on "Pet Projects" although credited to The Laughing Gravy, is actually the later 'J&D' remake.
30  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jan Berry Co-written Songs on: November 30, 2010, 11:10:41 AM
Does anyone know why no songs co-written with Jan appeared on Beach Boys albums. My guess is that it had something to do with Jan's Screen Gems contract, but I'm not sure.

Nothing at all to do with Screen Gems...

The reason why, pure and simple, is because Jan & Dean were "Pirates"!!!!! Pirate
31  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys in Czechoslovakia 1969 on: October 23, 2010, 01:07:51 AM
I was the person who gave Ian the correct information for the Czechoslovakian shows.

For the past year and a half I have been researching this ‘tour’ and have spoken to many people who were either connected with, or attendees at, these concerts... In the (near) future I plan to compile their stories / my interviews into some kind of magazine article including illustrations of some of the memorabilia which I either have in my collection or have been loaned with permission to use. Before that though I still have several people who I would like to contact and speak to...

The piece mentioned in this thread above, - that which appeared in Beach Boys Australia, I have not seen before, (acquiring ‘western’ accounts/articles can be more problematic for me), and obviously within the scope of my research I too would like to read the full article if the same Mark or anyone else would be kind enough to oblige  in my case also...?!

With respect to Dean being in the Mike camp in the '80s...IIRC Dean was one of the moving forces in prying Brian away from Eugene Landy in the late '80s.  Which, if you think about it, is pretty badass of him, considering he wasn't even in the family or the group.  Mark or someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.

It would sure be interesting to hear some more on this...
33  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When did the BBs stop wearing the candy stripped shirts? on: December 23, 2009, 01:35:59 AM
In reference to the earlier question about Mike wearing his Maharishi robes-he did wear them in the states-I looked thru pics (from newspaper reviews I have) and he wore them at Tampa in April 1969-probably that entire tour.  so they weren't just for Europe

Thanks for that Ian, much appreciated.  Smiley
34  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When did the BBs stop wearing the candy stripped shirts? on: December 17, 2009, 02:11:26 AM
Anybody prepared to speculate when Mike started wearing his white 'robe'...?

European tour May '69? Not sure if he wore it in Europe late '68 also...

Interestingly, once having returned to The States, when appearing on the Mike Douglas TV show, Mike sports the more conventional white suit...

Maybe Mike toned it (his image) down for US viewers...
35  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When did the BBs stop wearing the candy stripped shirts? on: December 16, 2009, 01:55:18 AM
On the Vocal Elements discs, which from memory feature soundboards of concerts from November/December 1967, Bruce comes out with a classic... He clearly says into the mic,

"Our stripes got arrested!"  LOL

So I understand by that time they were history. On the same disc I think I vaguely remember Mike commenting on their 'new stage outfits'... Without listening again, I could be wrong on that, but either way, Bruce's comment is definately there!

36  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys in Leningrad and Moscow 1969 on: October 16, 2009, 11:00:41 AM
Since I was compiling the gigs info on the site-I bought every thing I could find (Disc and Music Echo, Stars and Stripes Germany, NME, Melody Maker, Fabulous 209, etc, etc)- They did not play there according to any of those and it would have been big news-due to the politics. It didn't happen. You can be sure we'd know about it. If they'd gone there-it would have been brought up in all the interviews. When they appeared on Mike Douglas-they talked about playing  in Czecholslovakia only.  By the way-Mike Love's passport shows he was back in NY on June 29 1969. He stayed in England after that June 22 show. He was staying at Meditation retreat. He and Bruce made an app on the June 25 1969 Top of the Pops to introduce the Leeds footage

I'm sure the concerts didn't happen, but I wondered if they were actually officially scheduled at some point along the way and cancelled/dropped later... It also crossed my mind that these places were mentioned simply to 'balance' things up given the political situation between Czechoslovakia and The Soviet Union at the time, even if the band never had any intension of going there! (Such was the authoritive 'control' of the Czech/Slovak press at the time.)
37  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys in Leningrad and Moscow 1969 on: October 16, 2009, 10:59:57 AM
I'd be very interested in seeing that Czech article you talk about (if I understand it at all...)

I've got some great articles and stories relating to all of the concerts in Czechoslovakia... I intend to translate these into English so everyone can read them once I get a few more things through/organised.
38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Beach Boys in Leningrad and Moscow 1969 on: October 16, 2009, 12:53:47 AM
In a 1969 Czech magazine article I read that following The Beach Boys visits to Czechoslovakia and Finland, the group was scheduled to fly to the Soviet Union to play concerts in Leningrad and Moscow...

We are talking 1969 here, not later as per this thread:  http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,7019.0.html

Has anyone else seen any other mention of these 1969 Soviet Union concerts...?

39  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love In Real Love on: October 04, 2009, 10:46:02 PM
That's weird, Mike was still married to Suzanne when he went to India.

It's just a vague recollection, although I'm pretty sure the article had 'girlfriend' and not 'wife'...

Could have been a mistake/I could have been mistaken I suppose?  Huh

Anyone know if Suzanne travelled to India then?
40  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love In Real Love on: October 04, 2009, 09:16:28 PM
Here is another one.

Interesting thread, and nice photo... Can't identify everyone there though...

I believe along with The Beatles travelled their 'wives and girlfriends'...

Anyone any ideas who accompanied Mike on his trip/stay in India?

I vauguely recall some article where Mike explains that he and his girlfriend were educated in India with respect to being vegetarians... Who would that girlfriend be...?
41  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: This youtube video claims its the BBs on: May 27, 2009, 01:04:53 AM
For what it’s worth, (having been acquainted with The Surfaris version years before finally hearing The BBoys version on the Dumb Angel Rarities boot), I love this track. Why? Because of the guitar sound. BUT as time and regular playing passed since that first listen I began to think that it was another case of The BBoys supplying the vocals only...

I’m heading towards the conclusion, (based solely on listening to The BBoys studio albums and hundreds if not thousands of other period ‘surf’ music tracks), that the track itself is not them.

The guitar sound is too raw, too ‘surfy’... There is even a few seconds of  ‘double-picking’ in there to kick the whole thing off.... Aside from the decidedly l-a-m-e, (compared to some other period versions out there), cover version of ‘Miserlou’ I can’t recall Carl ever doing this type of thing on studio stuff.

Listen to the instrumentals on the Surfin USA Lp... Alright, so it may be a Fender sound, the guitars may be played through a Fender reverb unit etc. but where is the ‘double-picking’, the traditional surf style as we hear a few seconds of on ‘Karen’? (Don’t mention that ‘traditional’ bit to Paul Johnston!)

Sure Carl was capable of ‘throwing in’ something like that, but why would he if he’d never had a habit of playing that way?

But it’s not just that, it is the ‘sound’... By comparison  the  BBoys lead guitar on their regular studio Lps is smoother with less of an ‘edge’. (It could be considered more towards Rock & Roll guitar than essentially ‘Surf guitar’.)

I just think this ‘Karen’ track is noticeably ‘different’... Although granted, the ‘sound’ itself is a product of the musician, the equipment and the studio so depending on where and how this track was cut a variance could have occured in comparion to their other period recordings - so I wouldn’t rule it out completely.

For now I’m filing it under : ‘Unlikely’...   Smiley

43  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: CDs that skip and have statics on: April 20, 2009, 12:38:00 AM
The only two Beach Boys-related CDs that skip - and it really bothers me because they're on my favorite songs are:

Live In London - during the intro to "Do It Again", when Mike is saying, "It's nice to be back in Lon-skip-don again...."

This is not a skip. It is a mastering glich. It is on ALL of these CDs as I found out at the time.

I don't know if this was corrected when the 2fers were reissued some years later, but someone will know I'm sure... Smiley

Out in the barnyard, the chicken's do their number
Out in the farmyard, the cook is chopping lumber
Jump in the pig pen next time I'll take my shoes off
Hit the dirt, do two and a half, next time I'll leave my hat on
ba ba, ba ba ba, ba ba da da da da da, da da... haven't pitched this

Lot of animals are going back back back back back

LET'S HEAR THE ANIMALS!!!!!!!

[Van and Brian doing animal noises with absolute profession]

Do the, do the lamb thing, can you do the lamb? let's hear it...

[Van's self-conscious lambing] baaa baaa

Out in the barnyard... [/i]

May I add something?

If I remember correctly, are there not lyrical differences between original Smile lyrics and those on BWPS... ?

For example, take the original lyrics quoted above:- But on BWPS, (the words spoken/sung as opposed to those being written in the Cd booklet), isn't 'barnyard' said twice, the second time inplace of 'farmyard'?

Isn't 'farmyard' completely omitted?

May be it was originally 'upper/open country' but later for BWPS was presented as 'agriculture'...?

But whatever the words are on BWPS, my view is that that does not mean that they were the original lyrics...

Which all brings to mind one of the biggest problem of BWPS, where I think is where the biggest complaints come from: it doesn't take many risks.

No risk taking on BWPS...?

Where is "Do You Like Worms"? Where is "Love To Say Dada"?

Instead we have "Roll Plymouth Rock" and "In Blue Hawaii"...What does that say to you...?
46  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Beach Boys compilation CD coming in May on: March 25, 2009, 02:57:02 AM
"Summer Love Songs:Girls on The Beach" is the title of a new Capitol Beach Boys compilation CD due in May. No word on the contents, or if there is any rare or remixed material to get completists to buy it.

"Girls On The Beach" will be a previously unreleased alternate take featuring a ML lead vocal....  Transcendental Meditation

I'd be interested to hear about this again too...
48  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1990 vs. 2001 Re-issues - the Great Debate on: February 02, 2009, 02:54:49 AM
I bought the first set of 1990 2fers...

At the time I noticed that there was a glich on "Live In London" during Mike's 'introduction' to Do It Again...

Originally on the vinyl he said something along the lines of, "... it's nice to be back in London again oh boy!", but on the 2fer this came out as, "it's nice to be back in Lon again oh boy!"...

I asked someone else at the time who had also bought the Cd and found out that their copy was the same, (ie. most likely I didn't just pick up a faulty copy.)

When the 2fers were reissued in 2001, was this glich corrected?
49  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Musicians that have shared a bill with the BBs on: January 29, 2009, 04:28:31 AM
For me it's also interesting that The Challengers were there at that December '61 gig...

The Challengers were formed, I believe, following the break up of The Belairs AFTER perhaps their best known record "Mr Moto' (spring '61) had hit...

Eddie Bertrand formed Eddie & The Showmen
Richard Delvy formed The Challengers

On Paul Johnson's webpage, there are pictures of The Belairs from 1962 http://www.pjmoto.com/history.html showing both Bertrand and Delvy (drums) still in the line up...

Indeed The BBoys played with The Belairs in 1962, so obviously they hadn't broken up. (Maybe replaced the departing members?)

I'd be curious to know if it is confirmed beyond doubt that The Challengers were on that December '61 bill, as the time scale for them to actually be in existance (from memory) appears to be very tight...

Unless, of course it is a different group?!

50  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Musicians that have shared a bill with the BBs on: January 29, 2009, 04:05:04 AM
I have posted this before elsewhere...but I thought it might be fun to list some of the many acts that have played with the BBs. Just looking at their first three years....I have included the date they first played with them.   Dick Dale (1961) The Surfaris (1961), The Challengers (1961) Ike and Tina Turner (1961),

I know The Surfaris are mentioned in one of the biographies, (Gaines?) as appearing on the bill with DD and The Challengers, but I notice AGD's site has this December '61 show down as:

23 - Rendevous Ballroom, Newport Beach, CA
[interval of a Dick Dale/Challengers/Safaris show]

I remember reading some interviews with some Surfaris (Wipe Out) members, where it is mentioned that they took their name from a popular vocal group of the time called The Safaris, changing the spelling slightly to adopt a surfing connotation.

Question here is, was it The Surfaris or The Safaris at that December '61 show?

Also I would like to add that I suspect (I'm not at home to consult with the books, but according to this:

http://thesurfaris.com/Home.html ),

that The (Wipeout) Surfaris were not formed until late '62... So if it was The Surfaris it probably was not them...

Therefore to my knowledge that would leave only The (Bombora) Surfaris, (later to be known as The Original Surfaris, as a way to distinguish themselves from the nationally known Wipe Out hit makers...) who I believe were formed earlier. (1960?) (I can search for more precise details when I am at home if anyone is interested.)

So I suppose the question should be, is it known if this was The (Original) Surfaris or a popular vocal group of the time called The Safaris?

[Of course The (Wipe Out) Surfaris were a part (headliners?) on the Australian Surf Side Tour along with The BBoys a couple of years later...]
