Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Thank You, SMiLE Internet Community!

I just want to give a big "THANK YOU" to everybody, everywhere, who has kept the SMiLE fire burning online! If it wasn't for all of you -- all of us -- we'd never be getting official releases like this. Big "ups" to Jon Hunt and John Lane from The Smile Shop from back in the old days. That was where I got my early introduction. Also Bill Tobleman's website. Anne Wallace. Keepers of this message board! Love ya'll. I am so excited! Give thanks guys!

5. Cabin Essence (Vocal Sessions) This one surprised me the most! Were are the sessions for this?
Some of the doyng-doyng backing vox, and other backing vox I believe, were booted a loong time ago. Yeah. I have all the old boots. But I want it in good quality. I am afraid that the sessions we are going to get with TSS are just track sessions.

In 1966, the album would have been a single disc, 35 minutes, 40 tops. Fact. (source, VDP, private email sometime last century) Yeah, all my mixes are single-LP length. I've never done stereo either -- because there just wasn't enough material to do so. But now... !!

So, as of right now, I am assuming that all the session tracks on The Smile Sessions will be in stereo. I know that a lot of us SMiLE fans are pretty versed in music editing and I look forward to having a go at making a stereo mix. What foreseeable problems, aside from "Good Vibrations", do you think will hinder trying to make a full stereo SMiLE?
I am thinking "Barnyard" will be the trouble track.
Not all - some were cut to mono ("Humble Harv" session, for one) Oh yeah. Forgot about that one. Oh man! I just got excited thinking that the "Surf's Up" demo version might be in stereo!!

I thought I'd continue this thread by asking are there any "essential" tracks that are still missing??
1. Barnyard (Vocal Session) I'm bringing this one up because I am worried that the Barnyard track that is on CD1 will be edited and we won't have the full song... unless the Vocals were recorded with the Master Take. I'm not sure.
2. Water Chant
3. Little Red Book I have always associated this song as being a possible b-side of H&V although now I've been told that it is a recording from 68. Is that right?
4. With Me Tonight We got 2 minutes and 48 seconds of this tracks. Is that enough time for the 3 versions we know of?
5. Cabin Essence (Vocal Sessions) This one surprised me the most! Were are the sessions for this?
Please correct me if I'm wrong. Any other thoughts?

Besides the fact that "Da Da" evolved into "Cool Cool Water", it has just as much connection to the water element as "Surf's Up".
And as for "Worms", since the "Bicycle Rider" chorus was transferred to "H&V" I don't see Brian "sticking" a new chorus theme in there. Maybe he would have totally reformed the track but as for those verse/bridge recordings I feel Brian just let it go... well, I guess that could be said for all of the early Smile stuff so... not much of an argument.

I agree that "I Love To Sa Da Da" was recorded so late in the process that it's use as the "Water" section is very ify. I am one that believes that "The Elements" as a suite would have included tracks that Brian really worked hard on, my theory being...
The Elements a. Vega-Tables (Earth) b. Wind Chimes (Air) c. Mrs. O'Leary's Cow (Fire) d. Surf's Up (Water)
The problem with this is that the whole Elements section would be about 10 min in length. "Good Vibrations" I'm sure would have been the lead track to Side 2 but... what would have filled in the rest (making at least an 18 to 20 min side length)? Link tracks like "Water Chant"? Certainly not "Holidays". That track was scrapped a long time ago. Perhaps "You're Welcome"? I don' know.
Side 1 also complicates matters. I'm one that believes that "Do You Like Worms?" was scrapped. It leaves the album with much material missing to fill up the album... an unfinished album indeed.

I've always been a Water/Floyd man myself. Sure I love Piper but that was a totally different Pink Floyd than the band that recorded Dark Side. I've never really liked Madcap Laughs or Barrett though "Vegetable Man" and "Scream Thy Last Scream" are always on my MP3 player "hits" playlist.
Brian and Syd were geniuses at the same time. The music these two were making at that time wasjust mind-blowing. Piper and Smile are the truest of pop music art.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: THE BEATLES REMASTERED... finally

I always take the stereo 'Pet Sounds' over the mono, I don't give a monkeys about not hearing Mike on the bridge of WIBN etc etc...... I stick to the mono Pet Sounds because of the coda to "God Only Knows". The "new" one has no strength. Getting back to the Beatles remasters. I'm really getting excited about them and can't wait to see those mini-docs included! I also wonder if the "Red" and "Blue" albums will be re-released as well... eventually of course.
