2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE - stereo mix by Barnshine on: December 06, 2011, 07:18:05 AM
I'm now working on an "Alternate Smile Sessions" set as a sort of a companion to the official one.
It will be in flac and include:
1. This stereo edit of Disc 1 (including cross fades and fly-ins)
2. A mono re-construction of an "historical" Smile (12 tracks, no cross-fades or fly-ins).
3. More "clean" stereo/mono mixes of other songs.
4. "Fanmixers toolkit" - Smile bits and pieces in stereo/mono.
5. Vintage BW mixes of songs/sections.

Whatever became of this set? I was really looking forward to it!

I've been a bit busy for a while, plus I know P.J. is working on a similar set... but I'm pretty close to finish mine, so if you people are interested I'll take the time to complete and upload it.

Yeah, I haven't worked on any editing in over a week. The end of the semester is up and running so I am very busy.

Sounds like Darian is not a huge fan of TSS. Of course his taste is obviously biased towards BWPS. I don't know if I could ever see BWPS as the finished SMiLE. I enjoy the original recordings too much.

Did anyone else notice that the "Ten-episodes" has no become twelve?  Grin
Oh yeah! Righteous!  Afro

-TSS stereo mix with 1st chorus from the stereo piano/vocals sessions. Added reverb.

How did you get such a clean rip of the stereo from the vinyl?

I definitely have long thought that the home studio was all about money.. However, I am not sure if he increasingly used the Wrecking Crew all that much less, did he? I mean Da-Da has them on it, right? I think most of it was already recorded and he got stuck on Heroes and Villains and Vegetables, but the rest was recorded. He just recorded less. There were those remakes of Wonderful and the final stab at Child... but other than a lot of vocals I think that most of it had already been done.

By the way, I listened to the Smile sessions chronologically last weekend and it really does present quite an intereting narrative.
Yeah, I am in the middle of making a playlist of TSS chronologically including other sessions from the boots. Getting excited about it.

2/10/67 - My Only Sunshine: Part 2 (Brian vocals "When The Skies Are Blue")

This is the buried vocal now on the fade correct? It's not Mike? I thought for sure it is.
Well, the Sessionography doesn't mention Mike. Only Dennis and Brian and then the girls.

Oh yeah, I think it might be "gray" instead of "blue".

Hi everyone,
Those are 2 teasers from my upcoming set, "The Complete Smile Sessions". Hope you'll like them...

Vega-Tables

Cabin Essence

Enjoy!
Ah! You took my title. I was working on this today. Trying to edit the high quality sessions from the box set into bootleg sessions creating a complete picture. Also, of course, in chronological order. Gonna have to work up a new title now. Haha.
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things \ on: November 26, 2011, 01:44:57 PM
Ok, so I am trying to get the session just right for "YAMS/OMP/Barnshine"

11/14/66 - My Only Sunshine: Part 1 (take 11) [found on Disc 3 Track 6, 0:46]
11/14/66 - My Only Sunshine: Part 2 (take 16) [found on Disc 3 Track 6, 5:58]

11/30/66 - My Only Sunshine: Part 1 (Dennis vocals "You Were My Sunshine")

Late 66/Early 67 - My Only Sunshine: Part 2 (Brian, Marylin, & Diane vocals "Dum-bedoo-bedoo")

2/10/67 - My Only Sunshine: Part 2 (Brian vocals "When The Skies Are Blue")

And then I guess the 2/10 vocals were wiped when the section was added to the H&V mix made that day??

10  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Look on: November 26, 2011, 01:05:14 PM
Although Disc 3 Track 15 starts off with dialogue stating "take 1" it doesn't match the take 1 off of Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 17. What take is it really? Is it take 3, which is missing from UM17 or is it take 5, which fades out on UM17?

Speaking of the Unsurpassed Masters. What take of LOOK do they use in UM16?
Ah! Found it. It's Take 6!!

As far as I can tell (and I haven't busted out the bootlegs yet to really do an in depth analysis) the only things "missing" are the other two versions of "With Me Tonight" (even though one is present on Hawthorn, CA).
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE: Bring It On, Fanmixers. on: November 22, 2011, 07:11:49 AM
Alright the link worked!! It was my second time sharing through RapidShare.

Upon further hearing of my mix the only think I dislike is the "Vega-Tables" (ballad insert) section. I should have used the Smiley Smiley/Wild Honey version to get ride of the whistle echo at the beginning. But I was only using The Smile Sessions material.

Whoa! Chil'!
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE: Bring It On, Fanmixers. on: November 21, 2011, 03:19:37 PM
Ok, so I set out to make two Smile fanmixes. One is the historical what-if-Smile-was-released-in-1967 mix. It is a very basic mix, in mono, and follows the 12 to 14 individual tracks that don't lead into one another. I am also avoiding any post-June '67 recordings done. So obviously no fly-ins and also no Cabin Essence lead vocals. Anyways, that is that one. My second fanmix is what I am calling my Y.G.F.A.A.Y.? mix. It is a no holds barred mix with no rules. I am using a lot of boot sources and using as much stereo as possible. Echo and panning are in wide use!!

However, while making the YGFAAY? mix I would finish with a certain section and leave it alone for a day or two. When I came back to it I realized that I was just following the 2004 structure and maybe adding a bit of my own flourish but still it was all 2004. Then I got to thinking. I am sure this is what happened with the assembled version we have on disc 1. While Mark Linnet and Alan Boyd set out to recreate the 2004 structure as much as possible, their own personality peeked through. This is why I believe some tracks have their blends and some don't. It was a personal choice by either Mr. Linnet or Mr. Boyd.

So, in order to get my YGFAAY? mix under way I had to do what subconsciously I was doing anyway -- make a 2004 reconstruction mix. So, here it is. A mix that follows the 2004 structure as much as possible, even more so than the assembled version from disc 1. I've only used The Smile Session sources and the biggest divergence is "I'm in Great Shape". Other than that it is just editing to make it flow and follow much more closely to BWPS. It is mp3 quality for now.

16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dada and Cool Cool Water (and water chant) on: November 13, 2011, 04:42:17 PM
Yeah, it is actually pretty funny. When the "Cool Cool Water Chant" sessions came out on Unsurpassed Masters, Vol. 17 I had to adjust my head to make it "fit" into SMiLE (of course, before then it was solely a "Cool Cool Water" recording in my mind). I came to like it (love it) as an into to "Love to Say Dada" and having it included in Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE pretty much cemented it in my SMiLE thinking... but then... this Sessionography comes a long. Now I have to go back to my original thinking. LOL! Isn't SMiLE grand!?
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What ISNT on TSS on: November 13, 2011, 02:29:41 PM
The vocals are represented mostly in the assembled album version (also in particular the Smile Backing Vocal Montage). The listed vocal sessions you are reading on the Sessionography are just for documentation sake not to be meant that they are found on that track.

I have a question about the version of "Our Prayer" that ends with the boys giggling (found as one of the versions on the Vigotone boot). How did this version come about? Is it from the September 19th or October 4th session? Is it just an alternate mix of the version we know and love?

That's actually from the overdub sessions on 11/17/68.

Really? Wow. Huh. Did not know that. Thanks!

I've little doubt the vinyl-exclusive material will see CD/download daylight sooner or later. Maybe even legally.

Really? Sweet!
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rough credits for CD1 on: November 07, 2011, 11:11:53 AM
That's dealt with in the Sessionography as well, unless I'm mistaken... hold on [sound of retreating footsteps, and turning of pages, then silence]

[sound of returning footsteps]

Right, got it.

"Cool, Cool Water Chant
(appears as intro to Track 18 on CD 1)
Vocals: Brian, Dennis, Carl, Mike, Al, Bruce
Track, Overdubs & Vocals recorded at Brian Wilson's Bel Air Home Studio, Thursday October 26, 1967, 1:00pm-4:00pm
Additional vocals recorded at Wally Heider Studio 3, Sunday October 29, 1967, times unknown
Engineer: Jim Lockert
2nd Engineer: Bill Halverson
No take slated / Master # 58583
Recorded on 1" 8-track tape"

So, yes: it's a Wild Honey-era recording!!!!

How d'ya like THEM Apples?Huh

MattB

AH!!! Missed that in my read through!!! Thanks! So... "Cool Cool Water Chant" is off my mix for a Pre-Dada-Sessions-Only Smile Mix
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rough credits for CD1 on: November 07, 2011, 10:49:13 AM
18. Love To Say Dada (2:32) – recorded 5/16/67, 5/17/67 & 5/18/67 (all Gold Star), Carl’s flown in vocal 10/29/67 (Wally Heider)

Quick question: what about the "Water Chant"? Has any possible date been put to that recording? Was it even recorded during the Smile sessions (as apposed to a little after, like "Cool, Cool Water")?
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rough credits for CD1 on: November 07, 2011, 08:58:57 AM
So were the flown in vocals on 'Look' from the '71 'Surf's Up'?
Yeah, I think it's in the box notes... let me look it up...

So it is my understanding that iTunes does not make available scans (JPG/PDF) of the bootlet and artwork. Is there a brave soul planning to scans theirs? I would if I had the machinery.
