Partly! Somewhere out there there's also video of them doing Keepin the Summer Alive (the song) on the same show. It was previously on Youtube as a separate clip (but you can tell it's the same set because they're wearing the same clothes, standing on the same stage) but it disappeared from Youtube. It's a really good live version of KTSA, which, I have to admit, is a song I've always liked despite the fact that lots of people detest it. Thanks! I know this is an old post but this has resurfaced - very good live appearance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h62YsU1GZcThis has the Jack Burns intro, then KtSA, then a Jack Burns joke (presumably not at the Beach Boys' expense - I think it's a callback to something earlier in the show - but given their history you have to wonder how the guys felt about it... watch the video and you'll see what I mean), then Good Vibrations segueing into the hugely-underrated Goin' On. I found this again recently too! I was so happy to see it again - I think this is a great performance and love the version of Good Vibrations and Goin On.

Smiley Smile Stuff / Book Reviews / Re: Carl Wilson: A Biography by Kent Crowley (2015)

I finished the book recently and overall I have positive things to say about it.
As others have noted, it's not a biography of Carl and shouldn't have been described that way. There is virtually nothing about his private life aside from straight facts (like Carl and Annie divorced - but zero discussion about why or the impact on Carl or others). I get that Carl was very private and it seems that few family members or friends are willing to talk about him in detail. But if you don't have that kind of material, you shouldn't set out to write a biography.
What would have been more truthful would be to call it a musical biography. Because that's really what this is. What music inspired Carl, how did he learn to play, how did he improve as a musician and a producer...it's here that Crowley's book is at its best. There's interesting material here including some analysis that I haven't seen elsewhere.
It's well-written and nicely organized (straight chronology) and Crowley is obviously knowledgeable about surf music and the BB's later works. Just don't read it thinking you're going to learn a lot about Carl's personal life.

I haven't received anything from Kennedy Center either. I really think the venue has a responsibility to inform ticket buyers that a show's been cancelled. They shouldn't be counting on the fact that I get info from smileysmile or Mike's twitter.
I'm super bummed. I had planned a whole weekend in DC (don't live there) which I'm now going to cancel. I was really, really, really looking forward to this show.
I hope Brian gets better soon.

I personally don't understand why someone would pay to see Greatest Hits Live, when the lead singer of most hits (Mike Love) is touring as The Beach Boys. Why would seeing Brian sing the same songs (off key/out of tune) be better? It's kinda like a tribute to Mike Love oddly enough, in my opinion. Same for the upcoming Christmas Tour: Mike sang lead on the hits. He's the original voice. It would be like me going to see Peter Tork perform Monkees hits, when Micky Dolenz is touring as The Monkees. I prefer the original vocalist! Now, before you get mad that I'm a Mike Love fan, Brian on tour doing his Beach Boys lead vocal songs, album cuts, solo stuff, that would be cool. I like them both.
Because it’s Brian Wilson. Because it’s Al Jardine. Because it’s Brian’s EXCELLENT band. Because it’s interesting arrangements of not just the hits but of deeper cuts. Because it’s Blondie Chaplin. Because it’s the man who wrote most of the songs, a man with more musical talent than oh, just about anybody, interpreting those songs with a preposterously talented group of musicians. Should I go on?

Other than Heroes & Villains, Cabin Essence & Vegetables which I love, I'm not a fan of the lyrics of Van Dyke Parks.
I definitely agree. So you guys don't like Surf's Up? Wonderful? Just because you don't like VDP lyrics doesn't mean you don't like the song. I don't like his lyrics either but I love all those songs. It's always nice to get good lyrics, but the music is far far more important.

Those in the area, get the inside scoop on the album from Mike himself: "Mike Love will autograph your new Robert Graham tribute shirt at The Mall at UTC in Sarasota this Monday from 5:30-7:00pm! Get the behind the scenes scoop on his new album 'Unleash The Love' and experience the new collection." Is this real? I can't even tell. And I mean that about all aspects. Is it real that Mike is doing a shirt-signing? And do said shirts actually have a picture of Mike Love...not on them but IN them? There is something very subversive about that.

Guitarfool, thanks for explaining that (a lot of it is beyond me, but I did try to keep up).
I think the story about the tritone being banned by the church is myth, though.
Any chance you want to deconstruct the opening bars of Let the Wind Blow and tell me why they make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up?

I suppose the obvious one is not getting into The Beach Boys sooner. I started casually listening in the summer of 2006 (age 25), and THANK GOODNESS decided to buy a cheapo ticket to a C50 show just before midnight the night before the concert. That was the summer of 2012, so I was 31 years old, and I basically ate, slept, breathed The Beach Boys that whole summer.
The only other regret was not going to see the Brian Wilson Tour in 2013, and missing a rare opportunity to hear Little Bird in concert
That's funny. The second C50 show for me was in Saratoga, NY. I remember driving back home the day after the concert (a four-hour drive). We were playing BB CDs the whole time. It was a really beautiful sunny summer day and we were driving through the Adirondacks. It sounds ridiculous but I remember something happening, as if I could feel the chemistry of my brain changing and suddenly it all made sense to me. Songs that I had been lukewarm on before sounded better. I could hear something interesting even in the "not so great" songs. It was like my neurons all snapped into place to allow me to fully appreciate the BB's music. Since then it has pretty much been all BB all the time. That's pretty similar to my experience. Songs like Wendy, Please Let Me Wonder, I Just Wasn't Made For These Times, and All This is That that I'd passed over, or were indifferent towards, really stuck out that night. Really interesting. Was it the experience of seeing the all guys come together that made this change of perception of the deeper cuts? And/or was the live music just that good? It's a tough question but I think it's about hearing the music played live. My dad (a jazz musician) would say that you just can't replicate the sound of a live band with a big horn section blasting. I think there's something similar with BB songs - even though a lot of the recordings are sublime, there's nothing like hearing all those voices and instruments come together live. For me, hearing those songs performed live helped me hear more of the beauty in them. I realize that's not the most satisfying answer, but it's the best I can do...

Well it’s not a regret but probably the amount of drugs the Wilsons did.....kiddinggg
- Missing the C50 - losing touch with some old fan friends
Outside of that the ride has been amazing, I’ve met some great people, met up with fellow fans, became friends with some awesome people, I have gotten to learn and appreciate more about this band’s lifelong output.
When you think about the caliber of output this band has, and how blessed we are to have folks like Linnet, Boyd, Desper, Stebbins and other’s around to share stories, create mixes, put together boxsets. This is one of the best bands you could ever be a fan of. Sure the fan base can be infuriating at times, but we’re mostly all here because of a connection to this music. And this music kicks ass.
Yes, I will be sure not to ask Mike this question if I ever meet him.

The thread on Carl's death made me reflect on my biggest Beach Boys regret. I got into the BB too late in life and as a result I never got to see Carl live. This is by far and away my biggest BB regret. It may sound silly but it is really tough for me to accept. Knowing now that they actually played in my city pretty much every summer of my teens and twenties - but I was an idiot and didn't go - is just too much to think about. I don't even really know why, because I liked them then but just wasn't a superfan.
There are others but none can top that one.
1. Not seeing Carl play live.
2. Not going to more of the reunion shows. Went to two and they were so good that I sincerely regret not taking a week or so off and going to half a dozen shows. I went to the first show with some trepidation (I wasn't a member of any BB forums then and hadn't read a lot of reviews). About halfway into Do it Again I was like, "okay. this is going to be gooood." I should have gone home and bought tickets to more shows.
Do you guys have any?

Coming in late but it’s easy for me: I much prefer Smiley Smile and WH. By a long shot. I like Sergeant Pepper and MMT quite a lot but there’s no contest. WH is just one of my favourite albums ever; I just love it and there’s no sense telling me I’m wrong And for all of the criticism of Smiley Smile, well, it’s got Good Vibrations. I love the Beatles but if I had to choose between every Beatles song ever recorded or Good Vibrations, I’d pick the latter.

Can someone explain to me what Mike's referring to here? What does this have to do with Carl?
As Brian’s ability to functionally lead The Beach Boys faded, why didn’t Carl step up and take over leadership of the band?
I think he did, to a degree, but he experienced his own problems. There’s so much stuff that’s salacious… we should have that conversation at another time. Because you cannot imagine how degenerate and depraved and disgusting the whole thing became. It’s beyond disgusting.
I think this is the weirdest Mike Love quote I’ve ever read. A question about Carl elicits the words “salacious, depraved, disgusting, degenerate”? Those are some pretty fiery words. What is he referring to when he says “the whole thing” was so disgusting? This really boggles my mind. As an aside, it’s a weird question, because Carl did pretty much take over leadership of the band...certainly the musical aspects, for a time.

I think that scene from Wipeout is so bad it’s good.
I don’t know how to do a screenshot on the device I’m using, but there are a couple of scenes in the video for Crocodile Rock that consist of extreme close-ups of a person in an alligator costume ogling a woman’s breasts. There’s really no way you can’t cringe while watching that.
Yep, that's a good one Thanks for capturing it in all its glory! And I made a mistake in my original post - it’s clearly a crocodile, not an alligator...

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Still Cruisin and SIP should be in the core catalogue.
|
on: January 05, 2018, 10:36:02 AM

This is such a crazy discussion. Of course they are BB albums. Do we even need to explain why?
However, I disagree with HeyJude’s assertion that SIP is easy to find on used CD. It took years of searching for my husband to find it (and he is a crazy CD fiend who browses used CD stores, thrift stores etc...a few times a week). In my experience, a zillion copies of Still Cruisin are available but very few of SIP.
It's certainly all relative. I wouldn't expect to find SIP in 2018 in any random used CD bin. If you only shop at brick-and-mortar stores, then all bets are off. I wouldn't expect to find the majority of the BB or solo catalog. But usually, there are five to ten or more copies up on eBay. As with most items, the prices range from ridiculously high to pretty low. But finished eBay auction searches show dozens of copies have been sold in the last few months, as low as $10. Amazon also has a half dozen copies of the CD under $25, which isn't bad for a CD that sold very few copies and has been out of print for most of the last 25 years. So I'd stick by the general assertion that it doesn't take much looking or much money to find SIP on CD. If you're only willing to pay under $10 and old look at brick-and-mortar used CD shops and thrift shops, then yeah, it'll probably be pretty challenging. It's actually harder to find (and more expensive) to get a physical CD copy of the 2000 "MIU/LA" two-fer CD at this point, as that *one* particular two-fer has been out of print for awhile. Huh. When we were looking for it it was also ridiculously expensive on EBay and Amazon, etc... but that was a couple of years ago so maybe things have changed somewhat? But I do remember that online we could only find it for like 80 bucks and up (no joke). When we finally did stumble across a copy we felt like we’d found a jackpot. Also, this is in Canada so not sure if that makes a difference.
