I don't think Justin Bieber not writing Pet Sounds makes his mental illness any less valid than Brian Wilson's. I just don't see the point in criticizing Bieber for quitting a tour when our favorite artist did literally the exact same thing.  Why does there have to be a competition between Justin Bieber and the Beach Boys anyway?  Why does it matter?  If you like the Beach Boys then listen to the Beach Boys, if you don't like Justin Bieber then don't listen to Justin Bieber.

Keep in mind Brian Wilson suddenly quit touring around the same age after a mental breakdown.  I can't imagine the situation for Justin Bieber is significantly different.

In 7th grade my concert band played an arrangement of Kokomo.  I don't really remember much of it, I think I played the drum set part.  I can't imagine it was very good.

I remember in High School overhearing the choir rehearsing Barbara Ann and Little Saint Nick, and it was....rough.  As far as I know they never ended up performing them.

Are they maybe doing the shorter set at outdoor shows?  Playing a long set might get grueling in this summer heat

I'm looking to get my friend some Beach Boys albums as a birthday/graduation present later in the year, and I'd like to have an opinion on what would be great "starter" albums.

Currently, I have Pet Sounds, Friends, 20/20, Surf's Up, Holland and Love You as my picks, as I don't know what she has at the moment.

Love You isn't exactly for the faint of heart, so I'm not sure if I would put that in a starter pack.  I would also put in some pre Pet Sounds stuff like Today or Summer Days/Summer Nights

It's a damn shame Brian isn't coming to Ohio. Columbus would be ideal, but Cleveland or Cincinnati would be great too.  Sad

Yeah I'm going from Columbus to Detroit to see the show.  I get out of class at 3 that day so I'm gonna have to book it straight to detroit as soon as I get out.  Good thing it's on a friday!

Hey Mr. Desper while we're on the subject of Do it Again, may I ask you why the guys decided to include the "Workshop" ending in Do it Again?  It just seems so odd and I've always wondered why they included it.

I guess Mike Love was being literal when he said "Who's gonna hear this sh*t?"

Do you know if that 1990s interview is available anywhere on the Web?

Found this quote from a 1995 interview in Vox Magazine:

I've seen that issue of Vox on eBay...

This honestly might've been one of the weirdest things I've ever read

I agree with more Dennis and Al in general. either could have done Tree justice and I'd love to hear Dennis and Carl's attempts at SOS.

but mostly I wish Brian had laid down more leads on his compositions, at least in demo form.
if there was just one version of Brian singing God Only knows in '66 I would die much happier. same goes for any number of songs that Carl or somebody else sang instead. it's a long list.

The Pet Sounds Sessions box set has a version of God Only Knows with Brian on lead.  Although it sounds more like Carl and Brian doubling.

I may be the outlier here, but I actually love Dennis's late 70s raspy voice.  It adds so much emotion to the music, you can tell he's really feeling what he's singing.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BB song/songs you wish had a different lead vocalist? on: March 05, 2016, 02:18:46 PM
I wish we would have gotten all the Dennis leads over the years that were originally planned for him, such as I Just Wasn't Made for These Times, Sail on Sailor, etc.  I even think I heard once that Dennis was originally supposed to sing Cabinessence in an exaggerated country voice, I would love that.

I also wish Dennis sang lead on more of his own songs such as All I Want to Do, It's About Time, Steamboat, and Only You.

Basically I want more Dennis leads.

At 2:06 in this video we see that just Mike and Bruce are present in this episode.  I think it's been pretty common in the show for various permutations of the band to show up out of the blue, so I don't think it would be all that alarming if just Mike and Bruce show up in an episode of Fuller House.

Yeah, but remember... that was during Carl's lifetime, back before the sh*t hit the fan in terms of how the band was represented. In 1992, Mike was allowed to release an album as "The Beach Boys" without Brian's involvement; not so today. Since 1998, and particularly since post C50, the identity of the band and who gets to "be" the band has certainly been on the minds of the members and their lawyers.

I don't think that a nearly 30-year old past appearance, during a time period when all living members of the band were welcome to publicly represent themselves as members of the band (but only some just happened to make that appearance) can be compared to what is likely a far more sticky situation today.  Again... we *might* have Mike and/or Bruce appearing on Fuller House next season, but if it happens, I think there would be some legal hoops for them to discuss, and I'm not convinced Netflix would just approve the writing and filming of a scene without being *very* careful about how M&B and their band status are mentioned. I'd be surprised if it happens at all.

Yeah I for sure agree with you about their possibly being a lot of behind the scenes muckery going on.  But I was more speaking about how things would look from the perspective of your average joe watching Fuller House who know's next to nothing about the band.  They probably wouldn't be really suspicious if only two guys showed up claiming to be the Beach Boys.

What I find really interesting about that picture is that Bruce is playing a Squier bass.  For those who don't know, Squier is a sister company of Fender that produces low end entry level models of Fender instruments.  They are typically much more affordable than Fenders and are marketed towards beginners.  So it interests me that someone who has as much money as Bruce would be playing a Squier instead of a genuine Fender.

Trying and failing to find online that illustration from Millward's book  which depicts the Boys as animals wading through long grass… Broan's a bear, Al's a duck, Bruce might be a raccoon … I think.

Anyone able to provide a link here?

If each of The Beach Boys were a breed of dog, what would each one be?

Carl would probably be a lab; intelligent, obedient, loyal.  Brian would probably be something like a border collie; absolute genius but with destructive tendencies.  Bruce is obviously a poodle.

Thoughts?

Man this is all getting too weird for me
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rocky Pamplin book about The Beach Boys? on: January 20, 2016, 02:03:03 PM
I'm pretty baffled as to why Rocky keeps coming here, like what is he getting out of all this?

And I also don't get why keeps rambling on about "what happened to Brian", I'm pretty sure we all know the answer

Suspect he's looking to make a fortune from the book and knows we're its target readership.

Aren't we?

See at first that was quite obviously his motive, but by this point it seems like he's doing way more harm than good to his book sales

24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What If?: SMiLE came out instead of Good Vibrations? on: January 17, 2016, 02:24:46 PM
It seems like Good Vibrations was a huge part of the promotional campaign for Smile.  I genuinely believe that if Smile was released it would have been huge, but I think that is dependent on Capitol's promotion campaign.  If Good Vibrations hadn't come out then Capitol wouldn't have a hit single to assure them that Smile is commercially viable, so it probably would have gone the way of Pet Sounds and remain virtually unpromoted by Capitol.  So basically Good Vibrations was key to Smile's potential success.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alternate universe: Mike chooses Scientology over TM in 1968 on: January 07, 2016, 08:21:16 PM
Did Scientology have THAT big of a following, a popular following, in 1968?

By 1968 Scientology had a pretty respectably sized following, but their campaign to recruit big named celebrities hadn't started yet so it's pretty unlikely that Mike Love would have found his way to Scientology in 1968.
