Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Questions you'd like to see addressed in Mike's book

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame speech.
This definitely needs to be addressed. Has Mike spoken about it in any interviews since? It was a horrible moment. Funny that a well timed joke by Bob Dylan was what saved the day, but for Mike that incident did a hell of a lot of damage. His odd style choices over the years I would like to see discussed at least in passing. I've been watching the Old Grey Whistle Test clip of Mess Of Help a lot recently and you can't look at him there and not think, "Ok Mike, please explain." I want to hear his vision of The Beach Boys through the years. What he thinks the band should have been compared to what it was at various stages. His relationship with Dennis.... As long as he's honest it can't fail to be an interesting book. I'm not expecting 'the definitive truth about The Beach Boys', just the definitive Mike Love version of events. It's a shame that so much of this thread reads like a shitty Comedy Central roast of Mike. One where the only roaster is Kathy f***ing Griffin.

Can someone help me help someone out? A guy I know sprang for the VIP but has lost the email with details on how to pick up the photo Tara took of him and the guys. I know it involves logging into a website with your email address but couldn't tell him which one.

Imagine if your cousin had come through years of drug abuse to, against all odds, be alive and well and working in his 70's.
You don't celebrate or congratulate your cousin on the fact that he is working and successful, you make a public point of saying that you don't bother listening to his new music, while bringing up his decades-old drug abuse at seemingly every available opportunity as if it's something he should be inextricably linked with and deserves no credit for having moved past.
What do you call that? I call it being a sh*t.

I'm staying away from this place for a few days. It just pisses me off to hear people nitpick over minutiae when we're talking about new music at the age of 73 from one of the greatest geniuses in all of music - especially when its the people who should be embracing, valuing and enjoying it most. God, the fucking negativity.

I wonder if some dealers add those stickers/stamping a to standard issue CDs in an attempt to artificially inflate their perceived value to collectors?
We have some serious collectors within our community… anyone ever come across such a fake?
Years ago when I was collecting I came across fakes quite often in that vain. You could tell because the promo's were usually given a different catalog number, or towards the 2000s were commonly included in a slipcase rather than jewelcase with the coverart and either a sticker or small sheet containing a condensed version of the press release. Universal used to (around this time - '95-'05) actually have a stamp-style 'PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY' label printed directly on to the disc as part of the disc's artwork (i.e. the non-playable surface of the disc). I used to avoid anything that didn't have something to specifically set it apart from the released version - so if all indicators that it were a promo were contained only on the jewel case (PROMO USE ONLY stickers or stamps) etc. I'd give them a pass. Most CD promos don't go for very much anyway, although I'm sure there are exceptions. A recent one that springs to mind is GN'R's Chinese Democracy, what's known as the 'Red Hand' artwork. Something like 25 copies produced for what was evidently supposed to be a re-release/variant containing some quite intriguing in depth liner notes from Axl that were absent from the released version.

Half of this board thinks they're the Sherlock Holmes of autotune. I couldn't give a tuppenny f*** if Brian wants to use modern effects, enhancements or techniques. He's Brian Wilson, I'm not, he knows what he wants his records to sound like. Do these people go to magic shows with the sole intention of figuring out the illusions too? Personally I like to be swept away by the song, it's content and so on. You know, what do the kids call it...er...enjoying it?

Very much hoping to make the Leeds date for my birthday. Never thought Bri would come to my hometown.
Also does anyone else suspect that given the size of the venues and the way Brian has been talking in interviews lately that this may end up being billed as a farewell tour?

Two recent discoveries for me are Let Him Run Wild and Sherry She Needs Me. For the former, the "Guess you know I..." part sounds so amazing to me. This won't make sense to you guys, but subconsciously (or maybe not since I've thought about it) I'll create little snippets of songs in my head and that part of LHRW was exactly one of those snippets. It sounds perfect to my ears.
One of my favorite moments from Today!

Has this song become a hit by any measurable standards? Is it on the radio; it it in the charts? I fear no and no. So what is it's status and function. I was hoping it was a "hit" but that now seems ridiculous.
My sister was in a garden centre on Sunday and heard it played there on BBC Radio 2 (most popular station in England) for what it's worth.
