176  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds goats - where are they now? on: June 16, 2016, 01:50:57 PM
That is a fantastic article!  The only thing they got wrong is Brian's age.

Anyone know the status of Dennis' bag of Fritos?

I was also thinking about that aggressive goat - I think he's the same one who climbed on the large turtle in the Zoo's archival photograph!

I like it.  Summer 1988...I was 16 years old and hanging out with a great group of friends, going out every night, budding romances, etc..

But I digress.  It's a good song.  I don't like the sax solo, but the song was perfect for its time.  I agree that Carl's voice is the best part of the song, but the rest is not terrible.

Now I am craving a Mai Tai.
180  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds 50 track listing on: June 10, 2016, 08:38:09 AM
I'm still mulling over the decision to purchase this new set.  I am probably in the minority, but live tracks do nothing for me.  I have never been interested in hearing live stuff from any artist.  It appears that that the live tracks make up the bulk of previously unreleased material in this new set, and I have every other version of Pet Sounds released in the past.

I might wind up buying the set just for the booklet/pictures/text.
181  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Fantasy Brian Wilson "Solo Albums Only "Concert Setlist on: June 09, 2016, 02:16:29 PM
Inspired by some discussion on another thread, I have created a fantasy concert set list taken strictly from BW solo album cuts.  It's 21 songs total, basically in chronological order (only exception being Love and Mercy at the end, as is tradition).

What would your set list look like?

One for the Boys
Melt Away
Rio Grande
Your Imagination
Where Has Love Been?
Lay Down Burden
This Isn't Love
Soul Searchin'
Gettin' In Over My Head
Desert Drive
Don't Let Her Know She's an Angel
Can't Wait Too Long
Midnight's Another Day
That Lucky Old Sun (Reprise)
Goin' Home
Southern California
This Beautiful Day
Whatever Happened
The Right Time
One Kind of Love
Love and Mercy

With all the PS stories today noticed a link that related to this old thread. Pages 2-3

Only '5 Beach Boys' mentioned several times. The writer must have been told to keep mom on Bruce. Wink

I love the look on Brian's face as he watches Al sing.  Such a look of pride and approval.  It is heartwarming to see these two men still in the same room together enjoying their life's passion.  The Hawthorne High quarterback "handing off" vocal duties to his halfback.

Their vocal blend even at age 73 is still great.

I've been thinking about this house a lot lately and would love to see more pictures of the inside and the "Holy Grail" picture (if it exists) of the piano in the sandbox.

Here's some information that I thought was interesting.  The website itself is really clunky (it's called "Beach Boys Wiki" and constantly locks up on me, so I copied some of the text below:

Homes

The Wilsons

◾8012 S. Harvard St., Los Angeles CA, USA. The Wilson family (Murry, Audree, little Brian and Dennis) moved there in late 1941 and lived there until early 1945 when they moved to 3701 West 119th Street, Hawthorne, CA- now site of the Beach Boys Landmark.

Brian Wilson

◾5N129 Dover Hill, St. Charles, IL 60174. Brian Wilson and his wife moved here in the late 90s and only stayed for 2 years or so. They chose the location to be near Brian's then-producer but left after a falling out with said producer. The two have since reconciled. The house was listed for $1.49 million at one point and includes Brian's custom-built basement music studio.
◾910 Greentree, Los Angeles California, USA. This is where Brian Wilson lived in the 1980s as he was being treated by a psychiatrist for his well-publicized mental health issues.
◾10452 Bellagio Road, Bel Air, Los Angeles CA, USA. Brian and Marilyn Rovell lived there between 1967 and 1978.
◾1448 Laurel Way, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles CA, USA. Brian and Marilyn Rovell lived there between 1965 and 1967.
◾7235 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles CA, USA. Apartment home of Brian Wilson circa 1964.

Dennis Wilson

◾ 31284 Broad Beach Rd, Malibu, CA 90265. Dennis' home with Karen.
◾ 2600 Benedict Canyon Dr, Beverly Hills, CA. This is where some of Dennis Wilson's happier years were spent; he had moved with his wife and two kids
◾ 6120 Trancas Canyon Rd, Malibu, CA 90265. Dennis lived here with Shawn Love for a time. Google Streetview shows a scenic view of the distant Pacific Ocean from the location.
◾ 14400 Sunset Boulevard, Pacific Palisades, California. This was Dennis' home in the late 1960s. Described as a large log-cabin-style home, Dennis hosted the Charles Manson family here for a summer to great expense. Dennis later moved out to be rid of Manson and his "family".
◾ From a fan-site: ◾ 8012 Sth. Harvard Blvd. (born there 12/4/44)*

3701 W. 119th Hawthorne (1946-1964)** 600 Hyde Park Avenue, Inglewood (1964) 124 Hillsdale, Inglewood (1965) 2600 Benedict Canyon (Dennis & Carol)+ 14400 Sunset Blvd (the 'Manson' house)++ Wavecrest Ave., Venice Beach  Beverly Glen  Slip C-1100, Marina Del Ray (berth of  Harmony 1974-80) 3109 Ocean Front Walk  32184 Broad Beach, Trancas (Dennis & Karen) 9747 Yokum Drive, Beverly Hills (Dennis & Karen) Coldwater canyon (Dennis & Christine 1980 - Christine's house, I believe) Trancas Beach (11/83) Santa Monica Bay Inn, Ocean Park Avenue (Dennis & Shawn)

I think that Pacific Coast Highway would have made a better album closer, with the group's last word being "Goodbye" sung in harmony.
187  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Observer: It’s Time to Destroy ‘the Legend of Brian Wilson’ on: June 03, 2016, 03:22:11 PM
The author's main goal is simply to agitate and tear down a great and admirable figure. He thinks is is hip by going against "conventional wisdom."  Somehow he feels that by writing this diatribe, he can be "anti-establishment" and therefore cool.

However, his logic is flawed, and he clearly has an agenda to push. I ain't taking the bait, you two bit hack.

I found an interesting article from a 2013 interview with Scott.  I had no idea he got his start by writing commercial jingles.

189  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Paul and Linda at Brian's 34th Birthday Party on: May 31, 2016, 06:06:18 PM
Does anyone know the circumstances which resulted in Paul and Linda attending Brian's 34th birthday party?  Were they on a tour stop in the area?  How were they invited?  It is just so cool to see them all hanging out together and Linda holding up and "selling" the 15 Big Ones album.

Al dressed like a monk is definitely a bonus.

190  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: CONCERT: National Memorial Day Concert for 2016 with The Beach Boys on: May 31, 2016, 05:50:19 PM
I think everyone is correct. Looks like a live orchestra playing along to a pre-recorded track, maybe a few live instruments, with a mix of lip-syncing and some live vocals.

At 3:30, the high hat doesn't seem to be touched. Besides, the high hat doesn't make that shaking sound.
191  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds Track Placement on: May 25, 2016, 06:46:10 PM
I think removing Sloop John B improves Pet Sounds by making it a more thematically cohesive album. I also like to place Trombone Dixie after 'Don't Cry'.

You wish Trombone Dixie would be better on Use Your Illusion?
192  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds Track Placement on: May 24, 2016, 11:35:08 AM
The dichotomy between the hopeful optimism of WIBN to start the album and the mournful bitterness of Caroline, No as the end to the album is masterful and underscores the theme of the album - be cautious, don't get your hopes up, look over your shoulder because heartbreak and darkness are always ready to pounce.

So, I wouldn't change a thing.
193  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike thrown out of Martoni's Italian Restaurant? on: May 23, 2016, 02:37:02 PM
I have mixed feelings about Martoni’s,” Love tells the Austin Chronicle. “I think there was some great food on his new menu, some incredible dishes. But at that point in time, there were so many drugs being taken by Tony and other members of the kitchen staff, and there was a lot of collaborating with people other than myself. I had literally nothing to do on anything on the expanded menu, so naturally I was a little upset.”

“I collaborated with Tony on so many dishes (pizza, meatballs and spaghetti, lasagna), but I wasn’t under the influence of anything during the cooking of that stuff,” he adds. “There was such weirdness going on at the time. I’m not trying to poo-poo it, but it was just a little too weird for my taste. Then Tony shelved the menu, and whenever you have an unfinished creation it takes on mythological proportions. I do think there’s some beautiful dishes, like ‘Trippa’ and ‘Coda alla vaccinara,’ but there’s a negative side to it too.”
194  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - Hurricane Katrina Phone Calls on: May 23, 2016, 05:47:45 AM
Fantastic thread - thank you very much for reminding me of the incredible generosity in the face of such a terrible disaster.  I know Jerry personally (he used to live in Baton Rouge, about 50 miles from me).  I had forgotten Jerry's fantastic efforts to collect donations and supplies after Katrina.  What an incredible person he is.

Personally, we were affected only slightly due to the hurricane-force winds which brought many trees down, one just clipping the corner of my home (I live about 30 miles north of New Orleans).

For those not familiar, you will be pleased to know that after almost 11 years, New Orleans has mostly been rebuilt and is now protected against a 100-year storm around the perimeter of the metro area with numerous levees and floodwalls.

195  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Don Was Talks Brian Wilson, NPP, IJWMFTT Film - New Interview w. Photo on: May 20, 2016, 06:54:18 AM
The dichotomy of the various interviews of Brian in IJWMFTT was striking.  When Brian was talking about his dad, he seemed out of it and his speech was slurred.  When he was sitting on the couch with Melinda talking about ego and humor, he was lucid and uncharacteristically verbose.  Maybe the couch interview was done later in the process, combined with Melinda by his side and the interesting topic, which put him more at ease.
196  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / My Birthday Present to Pet Sounds on: May 19, 2016, 08:58:50 AM
A letter composed using only the words found in the album's song titles (I think it somewhat makes sense!)

Caroline,

I know I just wasn’t made for these times.  Let’s talk for a day.  I’m waiting for you here.

While it wouldn’t go away, there’s an answer, not only in my head.  God knows me - that’s no put on.  Don’t shoulder me today, believe me.

Still, the sloop sounds nice.

Your Pet,

John B

There are many books out there, but these 5 books will provide you with a thorough and balanced summary of the band.  After reading them, you will be well-versed in all things Beach Boys.  My suggested list should be read in the order as presented below:

The Beach Boys and the California Myth - David Leaf

Catch a Wave - Peter Ames Carlin

Becoming the Beach Boys - James B. Murphy

Beach Boys FAQ - Jon Stebbins

The Beach Boys: The Definitive Diary of America's Greatest Band on Stage and in the Studio - Keith Badman
