Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / "Dexterized" Beatles Songs
|

I pulled out my Capitol Albums Vol. 1 set out of the archives this morning and re-listened to the terrible Dave Dexter remastered versions of She's a Woman and I Feel Fine. Truly awful.
Does anyone know of a database/resource that would list Beatles songs tampered with by Dave and what exactly he did to each song?

While doing a little research to respond to a comment under the Jo Ann Marks thread, I came across this tribute to Mike's father upon his passing in 2013. I didn't want to hijack the Jo Ann Marks thread, so I am posting it here. It is a cool video of pictures of Milt and the Love family. https://vimeo.com/69273846

After repeated listens, I really like this album. The harmonies are flawless and intricate. The songwriting continues to be top-notch.
But...
I still prefer Grand Hotel. That album was such a growth and departure from the previous album, and really stood on its own, breaking away from the BB-comparisons of Freedom Wind.
When I first heard Grand Hotel, I was in shock at the change in style and direction from Freedom Wind, but ultimately, it grew on me and I appreciated it as its own achievement.
Maybe I am experiencing the same shock since Together is such a departure from Grand Hotel. Perhaps I'll change my opinion in the future.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Summarize the Beatles' Recording Career by Year with One Word and One Song
|
on: July 07, 2016, 06:49:16 AM

I challenged myself to sum up the Beatles' recording career by year using one song and one word to describe that year in terms of their musical representation to the world, their artistic growth, and their cultural impact. Further, I wanted the words to have a sort of flow from year to year. I took a small liberty with 1964, knowing that IWHYH was actually released in 1963, but I believe it's impact is more associated with 1964.
What would you choose?
1963 – Anticipation – Please Please Me 1964 – Explosion – I Wanna Hold Your Hand 1965 – Maturation -Help! 1966 – Experimentation – Rain 1967 – Expansion – Strawberry Fields Forever 1968 – Fragmentation – Hey Jude 1969 – Separation – Here Comes the Sun 1970 – Dissolution – Let it Be

If the order was Summers Gone - From There to Back Again - Pacific Coast Highway, that would make all the difference for me.
It may sound cheesy, but to me, hearing the Boys sing "Goodbye" together in harmony as their last word on their last album would have been a better closer, in my opinion.

Excellent, review Krabklaw!
I agree with the vast majority of your thoughts. I only wish some of the songs were longer. I am one of the fans that actually thought Grand Hotel was an improvement over Freedom Wind, and I appreciated their expanding horizons and Bacharach-Association-Alpert influences which were more evident on that album.
With the new album, the intricate vocal harmonies are at the forefront, whereas on Grand Hotel, the focus was more on the instrumentation.
I'd say the only "weak" song on Together is My Friend. That one really doesn't do it for me. My current favorite track is Gold Winds.

Placing my bets on basically the same tracks as the 2006 40th Anniversary release with maybe a "previously unreleased" live cut.
Will probably include the "sessions" that have been released previously ad nauseam... you know the ones we can all recite by heart... "Play hard and strong all the way..." "I want to start it with the organ and the Fender bass..." blah, blah, blah...
Sorry to be so negative, but I haven't been "wowed" by archival releases since Hawthorne, CA in 2001.
