Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2017 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds - The Final Performances)

Was at the show last night. Had a great time. Here are my thoughts.
Feel Flows and The Night Was So Young were my favorites. Blondie does an exceptional job on feel flows. Brian on The Night Was So Young was unbelievable. He even hit the higher Carl parts on why did you have to lie yay yay parts. I couldn't believe it was even him at first.
Everything up until You still believe in me was stellar. Top Notch really! California Saga also really stood out.
Now the bad part. Brian really struggled to get through Pet Sounds. He sounded great before and after Pet Sounds, but beginning with YSBIM he was short of breath really bad and a lot of trouble even getting a word out. He did do a nice job on GOK though. He also did awesome on Good Vibrations and Surfin USA as well. So it was weird that he could barely even say a word during the PS set.
All in all it was a great show and the crowd really enjoyed it.
I was there last night as well, and I agree with everything you have said. Let my add my exuberance in hearing "Let Him Run Wild"- one my absolute favorites. I had no idea that Matt carried the show to that extent, but I certainly enjoyed his vocals. 15 years ago, Brian toured Pet Sounds and handled all of the leads himself. It is clear that Brian is slowing down and is now "speaking" his assigned vocals to a much greater extent. That's OK, and I definitely appreciate that we were in same room as the wonderful Brian Wilson. I am beyond grateful that he came to my City.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Beatles Recording/Instrumentation Fads by Year

I find it interesting that the Beatles would latch onto an instrumentation or recording "fad" that would span a few songs/albums/singles, and then move on to their next interest. I think you can almost break it down by year, although I admit you have to generalize a bit.
1963 - Harmonica
1964 - Rickenbacker Guitar
1965 - Volume Pedal/Electric Piano
1966 - Backwards Recording
1967 - Varispeed Recording
1968 - Solo Acoustic Recording
1969 - Moog Synthesizer
What would you add or remove from this list?

Good analysis. I think the 60's hair explosion was one reason an increasingly balding Mike decided to grow a beard to compensate. Not many groups at the time had members with beards (circa early 1966). Once the Beatles sprouted facial hair in early 1967, everyone followed, but Mike was a little ahead of the game.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The many punishments of Murry Wilson

Bruce Johnston, prior to his tenure as a Brian fill-in on tour, had to endure a bit of Murry hazing before he was given the job.
Late one night in early Spring 1965, in Western studios, Murry and Bruce were alone, talking about the upcoming tour. Murry positioned a portable microphone stand and microphone in front of Bruce.
With Bruce and Murry on opposite sides of the microphone stand, Murry stared angrily at Bruce, forcing him to look directly into Murry’s glass eye. Murry then slowly unscrewed the mic fastener, and the mic began to slip down the stand.
Bruce was confused and unsure of what to do next. Murry screamed at the top of his lungs: “FIX IT!!! IT’S SLIPPING!!! GET IT BACK UP YOU F’ING PREPPY PANSY!!!”
Bruce nearly sh*t his pants and quickly adjusted the mic stand. Murry berated him: “If you’re going to take my son’s place and sing his parts, then you have to make sure this microphone never drops on stage!!!”
Murry again stared into Bruce’s eyes and loosened the screw again. Bruce was ready this time, and quickly grabbed the slipping mic and put it back into position.
“Good, good” Murry replied. “Never, NEVER let this happen on stage. ALWAYS be aware of the mic stand and never let it out of your sight!”
To this day, Bruce is always adjusting his mic stand on stage, still recalling that fateful and frightenting day with Murry.
