Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Al Jardine die in 1965 only to be replaced by a lookalike ?

In the early 70's, Al went to Cincinnati to undergo one of the first sex change operations ever attempted in the United States, becoming "Susie" and driving a cab around town. He then wrote a song about his experience and submitted it to his replacement for inclusion on the 15 Big Ones album.
"Looks aren't exactly a plus" - Al didn't make a very attractive woman. Still a car enthusiast, he enjoyed his groovy little motorcar.
If you look at the cover of 15 Big Ones, "Al" is the only band member looking away, clearly an attempt to hide the physical differences between the real Al (now Susie) and the imposter.

There are some very insightful responses, and I believe all are correct.
The Beach Boys thought of as a nostalgia act likely began around 1967/Monterey. Over the ensuing years, they "bounced" back several times to a degree of "relevance", then fell back into the "Nostalgia" category, etc. from then until 1981 or so.
Each "Comeback to Relevance" was not as strong as the previous "Comeback" and everyone continued to age, so that certainly didn't help things. December 29, 1983 was a major setback.
C50 in 2012 was somewhat of a Critical resuscitation (mostly because of the last three songs on the TWGMTR album, in my opinion), but it didn't last long.
So, the nostalgia perception has ebbed and flowed, each time the strength of the "Relevance" not able to outlast the "Kitsch."
Thinking in terms of positivity, perhaps the "Kitsch" is so powerful is because those early-mid 60's songs are just so damn timeless.
I'm not sure if that makes sense...

We are weeks away from the 25th Anniversary of the release of this album. I've only heard a few very short snippets on YouTube. Maybe I will gather the strength to listen all the way through on August 3rd, but these comments and other reviews I have read over the years truly scare me.

You will be cutting it REALLY close. Brian is typically right on time or at most five minutes late, in my experience. But the whole show, with intermission, runs just about two hours.
Brian is very punctual and wastes no time starting the show. If the ticket says 8:00, Brian is walking out onto the stage at 8:00. He waves, says hello to the City he's in, tells everyone to sit down at 8:00:30, and music begins at 8:01. This was my experience in New Orleans.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What does Mike want?

I think part of him really does miss the hell out of the old days and would love nothing more than to travel back in time to when The Beach Boys were beginning to make it. As this isn't possible I think he's bitter about where life took his cousin, friends, family, over the years. He doesn't know how to express this irritation methinks, so he takes it out passive aggressively when he can. He takes it out in force during lawsuit season.
What does Mike want? My best guess is he wants to be back on the stage with Carl, Dennis, David, Al, Brian 1961. That's why he loves touring: these days he looks out and sees singing happy people every night, fans that adore his songs. Fans that don't get caught up in the cliques and sides, just people out there who love the music. He wants to make music with Stamos and McGrath, music with autotune so hopefully young people can get into this music and go to his concerts. He can't stand the depressing life suite because it reminds him of what he hates about life...which is why he wants to write with Brian to bring out some more positivity perhaps.
Very insightful observation. Yearning for the past, the innocence, the camaraderie, but not being able to go back in time, creating bitterness and resentment, and maybe even some regrets.
