No…Joe had left the band by then…but they hobbled on without him with diminished success
27  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / 1974 is now up on my site on: October 29, 2023, 10:39:55 AM

You can look at all the 1974 listings with photos, ads, etc at my website Beachboysgigs.com. Here is the link: https://www.beachboysgigs.com/1974-2/

By the way you can look at the years 1962-1974 (By the way I have continued to tweak those years-with more photos/listings). You can also view a blog (under updates) of shows discovered since The Beach Boys in Concert book came out in 2013 (that is complete up to around 1973).

To some degree I’ve lost interest in more Beatles products, which is crazy because I love them. I feel like I have all I need…on the other hand I am fascinated by all the unreleased beach boys that has come out
29  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is there anything new coming out for copyright extension this year? on: October 22, 2023, 12:08:34 PM
Well I think it depends on whether they officially release some of the concerts they taped that year…as you know they surreptitiously released some to secure the copyright and quickly pulled them but they still could opt to put out some as official digital downloads

It’s obvious that after BW is gone, someone will eventually green light a deep dive into his solo career-warts and all…it will be interesting to see all the various twists and turns that it took in the 1988-1999 period-which sadly resulted in very little released music at the time
31  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Currently obsessed with the Sweet Insanity sessions.. on: October 14, 2023, 06:28:22 AM
I am confused- if Water Builds Up was refurbished as Let's Go Heaven In My Car-then why is Brian still working on a title by that name at an August 1990 session?
32  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Sly Stone - Autobiograhpy on: October 09, 2023, 06:44:37 PM
It will be interesting to see if he mentions Brian…they hung out a fair amount in the early 70s with Terry Melcher…Though mostly wasting time rather then making music
33  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Elvis Presley on: October 02, 2023, 08:16:36 PM
That could be cool…It was so foolish that they didn’t film his first 69 engagement-that would have been incredible. That’s the way it is captures him in good form as the consummate showman but even then he was starting to treat the oldies in disposable fashion whereas in 69 he was still as energized by them as in 68. As I said a while ago, On Tour has never really grabbed me but it has its moments
34  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1973 is now up on my site...if you like on: September 30, 2023, 06:05:22 PM
Yeah I am working on 1974 now…but I have more time in the summertime

It’s hard getting older and seeing your parents and their generation passing from the scene-a lot of great artists have left us in the last five years
36  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Video: Jim \ on: September 21, 2023, 05:04:10 AM
Interesting story…it was a fun and crazy time. Note that Terry M was already supplying dope to the Wilsons….In a 1970s interview Carl slammed Terry and Sly Stone for being a terrible influence on Brian’s addictions.

It’s a crazy world these days. I’ve tried to get my daughters into classic rock but like a lot of the current generation if it happened before 2010 they don’t want to know about it. To them *NSYNC is a classic rock band! I feel like the ability to just listen to only what you want these days is harming culture because no one is forced anymore to listen to something different. When I was a kid, we listened to whatever our folks played and developed an appreciation for older music. Now the kids all have their own cell phones and air buds and tune it out.
38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 2023 BBs documentary on: September 19, 2023, 12:34:40 PM
There may be…things thought lost keep popping up on YouTube.  So are things thought erased actually erased or just sitting in a vault gathering dust. Example-the BBs appeared twice on the Joey Bishop show. Those two appearances have never been booted but I don’t have proof that they don’t exist. But to find out is really a job for the BBs management or Iconic-they have the clout to look in ABC tv’s vaults. But that would take time and money and they’d have to license that footage. It’s undoubtedly easier to use footage from Sullivan or Red Skelton that’s all ready remastered and cleaned up….but it would be cooler to use the unseen footage! Of course some of the footage on YouTube may be poor quality video taped by a fan off the TV and maybe some footage isn’t in the vaults. When writing my book a guy told me that he’d seen footage of the BBs at the Silver Spade in 1970 on Australian TV…it would be cool to find that footage. It’s known that New Zealand TV filmed a 1978 concert but the footage we usually see is from the show in Melbourne a week later.
39  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 2023 BBs documentary on: September 18, 2023, 07:04:23 PM
I agree that expectations for documentary are low-I said on the other board that either they need to scour the world for interesting, unseen footage or they need to seriously dig into all the subjects fans want to know more about. But I believe neither thing will happen and it will be more talking heads saying that Brian is a genius and the aging band members reciting the Same canned responses we’ve heard too often
40  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner removed from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame board on: September 17, 2023, 07:32:15 AM
His comments illustrate why many people were always suspicious of the Hall and the whole idea of a Hall of Fame. A Hall of Fame for baseball makes sense because it is about statistics that people can’t really disagree on…You hit 400 home runs and you deserve to be in. But music is subjective…some artists are considered great that never sold large numbers of records and some
Artists that sold huge numbers of records are considered to be crap/schlock. So who gets in/out seemed over time to become wrapped up too much in the subjective opinion of people like Wenner. Luckily the BBs couldn’t be denied because he was never their biggest fan was a proponent of the dead and the San Francisco scene that I don’t think has aged well…To me the Hall has become a joke…people now seem to get in because of popularity more than taste/artistry.
41  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Billy Hinsche \ on: September 16, 2023, 01:53:49 PM
Before he passed, I talked to him a bunch. He at one point suggested that we collaborate on a book about his life. I was not aware that he was ill and, while I would definitely have been up for that, I didn’t realize the urgency.  I think he was thinking about his legacy and I also think that is why he did Live from Billy’s Place-he wanted to share stories of his life
42  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Weezer-It's the Beach Boys on: September 13, 2023, 08:49:41 AM
Well…I think they are a currently endangered species…the alternative rock band!! The airwaves are monopolized by mainstream pop and hip hop
43  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alternate SMiLE History Attempt on: September 06, 2023, 11:57:05 AM
I am not sure that the BBs lost interest in that Smile style...they were apparently pretty hot on Can't Wait Too Long in 1968 and Bruce stated in an interview that summer that it would be their next single-chances are that it was Brian who nixed it....seemed like he was losing interest finishing things in that period.
44  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Weezer-It's the Beach Boys on: September 06, 2023, 11:43:43 AM
Yeah--I downloaded that White Album and I am enjoying it a lot... By the Way, that kind of speaks to the age we live in....there is just such a bombardment of content being released that one cannot even keep track of it....I sort of followed Weezer for a while but as I got older I no longer pay close attention to every new album that comes out (used to buy Mojo religiously but have not since 2018 or so) and it must have passed me by completely when it came out.
45  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alternate SMiLE History Attempt on: September 06, 2023, 08:49:40 AM
Well I suppose it’s possible that the band felt he was giving away two very commercial tunes when they were desperate for a hit. In 1965 they were riding high and had no reason to feel threatened by his outside pursuits. Mike has stated that Heroes and Villains was the last bit of “super dynamism” by Brian but was Brian’s decision to “stop competing” only in relation to the BBs-maybe they felt that he was laying back with them but still going like gangbusters with Redwood?
46  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alternate SMiLE History Attempt on: September 05, 2023, 07:22:43 PM
Yeah…obviously Brian was the man in 1967 that they were depending on-hence their anxiety when he began to retreat a bit from the band in the autumn. Obviously a big point of contention is the three dog night episode-if it did happen the way it was alleged-it’s understandable that the band would react that way-as they we’re still really dependent on Brian. 1968 was really the year when they began to take greater interest in songwriting and production but in 67 it was totally understandable if they were very jealous of his relationship with Danny Hutton and his group
47  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Weezer-It's the Beach Boys on: September 03, 2023, 05:34:39 PM
Clearly they are big fans....and are familiar with the 1965 Murry tapes....

I have seen it...and Jim Murphy has seen it....but we can't find an answer either....maybe it will turn up one day...
49  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alternate SMiLE History Attempt on: September 02, 2023, 09:48:05 AM
But…if you are going to attack the BBs for their behavior…they have said (and it is unarguable) that whatever their personal feelings about Smile and what was going on…they were good soldiers and participated in all the sessions they were asked to by Brian. Now maybe they made it clear they didn’t like that material (a very very contentious discussion) or maybe they didn’t.
50  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alternate SMiLE History Attempt on: September 01, 2023, 04:38:37 AM
Well you know the answer….it’s gotten wrapped up in the band issue…those guys, mostly, painted a picture of a genius artist slowly becoming disheartened because of the lack of support of his band mates but in recent years the narrative has become one where Brian was becoming lost amidst a bunch of users and hangers on, who gave him drugs and isolated him from the band. So then the issue becomes who to believe? Is the truth somewhere in the middle or are their real Heroes and villains. The BBs have noted that they were good soldiers and did everything Brian asked…even lying on the floor of an empty pool to sing. There is of course the issue of the Siegel article alleging that there was a big fight during the Inside Pop filming but the footage is gone and the filming notes that were found don’t mention a fight …so some people say it never happened. In the absence of further evidence, I don’t see how this is ever definitively settled. And many would say let sleeping dogs lie….there is enough division in the BBs world.
