I personally wrote to him but he never replied.  He may be a BB fan but he writes books about many topics- Two similar books on the Beatles (which I own), etc... He wrote an article for a magazine on film this month-which I saw. It is highly unlikely that he would create an updated edition...but we will perhaps.  Irrelevant anyways.  If you know about how history is written-then you don't consider our corrections as attacks that require refuting.  Later books and research always build on past researchers.  So nobody is denying that Badman's book was very helpful-he set up the basic framework that I use to find additional info.  In the grand scheme of things-only BB fanatics care about this subject anyways.

Smile Holland- Obviously I'd appreciate any effort on your part to check those dates the BBs played the Netherlands in 68, 69, 70 and 72- any articles you find- I'd love copies.

Honestly-He did a pretty good job-it is a good book- don't be too hard on him.  I like the book-has a lot of good info and cool photos
1754  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Session info at 10452 on: January 18, 2008, 07:38:25 AM
One prime example- I have a copy of the AFM for Be Still and it is indeed dated April 13 1968.  Keith Badman assumed that this date must be correct (logical enough) and therefore created a tortured scenario in which Dennis flew home from Florida during a tour and then returned a few days later. This scenario had one problem- The Apr 13 Sarasota and Tampa concerts which he assumed were canceled actually were not. I have the concert review from the next days Sarasota paper to prove it, so clearly it is the AFM sheet that is wrong. Since there a number of such examples-it is fair to suggest that occasionly paperwork was created after the fact so musicians could get paid and the wrong date was inserted
1755  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Ed Sullivan 1965 did not happen... on: January 17, 2008, 10:13:19 AM
For those 4 or 5 poor souls that have mentioned this dispute in the past- I got in touch with the people that own the rights to the Ed Sullivan Show and they kindly looked at the tape of the May 16 1965- mentioned by Keith Badman and other writers as the groups second app on that show.  The show- despite the group being advertised in the paper-did not feature them. In fact Ed Sullivan never even mentioned them in the entire hour show. Case closed
1756  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BB relationships from 80s til today on: January 16, 2008, 11:39:50 AM
In terms of Bruce and his problems with the band in the early 70s- Mike discussed his departure at some length in a two part interview with Keith Altham in two June 1972 NMEs

Mike said in the June 10 issue that  "We had a meeting and we discussed the personal problems within the group, and the relationships between the various members within the group. Some of us had no relationship at all, and Bruce said, 'If that's the way you feel about it maybe I should just leave – I don't want to leave but maybe it's for the best! It was very amicable.  Bruce is definitely on a solo trip, he is a good solo performer, he writes fantastic songs by himself, and the time he spent writing alone isolated him from the group.  He had his own interests, his own relationships with the Press, and he played a game that was oblique to the Beach Boys. But now he is free to do as he pleases. The Beach Boys never threw Bruce out, he was just on a tangent that was outside the Beach Boys for so many years. His whole idea of the future is to be a song-writer and have a TV show, and it's all based on individual musical taste and individual aspirations which are fine, but now within the framework of a group. That was what was good about Bruce leaving the group.
Bruce was quoted that he was dismissed?
Bruce said he knew the problems as well as we did, and he wanted us to help him to write this song, but each individual in the group had something that affected them about the way Bruce had been for seven years, and he said 'if that's the way you feel about it I'll just split'.
Was it just a question of his life style being different from yours?
No, not at all, because his lifestyle is changing like everyone elses, the difference is that he is creative on his own not as part of a group. I wouldn't dream of doing a solo album or anything like that, but that's just me. We've all had our ups and downs within the group and got frustrated and pissed off because of the tremendous amount of work that's gone into the last year or so. But when Bruce was confronted with it he took it subjectively and he over-reacted, and said he would split.  He may have taken it as a dismissal but that's just too bad because we had tangible gripes about him. I don't think the subject is closed, we're still friends. Creatively I don't know what's going to happen, it depends on him a lot."

1757  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did the Beach Boys ever cover the Rolling Stones? on: January 15, 2008, 07:41:33 AM
Brian also attended the Stone's session for My Obsession in the 60s. Brian constantly mentions that these days and I found confirmation in a 1966 Tiger Beat- they mention Brian as one of a number of famous faces visiting Stones sessions.   This is the reason that groups like the Stones later recorded in wild places like Jamaica. If you record in Hollywood or NY- tons of friends will show up to distract you.  Brian shared the stage with the Stones at TAMI Awards in Oct 1964 and the BBs played on the same bill with the Stones again in Birmingham, AL in May 1965
1758  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: More updates to AGD's Bellagio Gigs/Sessions-including 1975 on: January 14, 2008, 07:16:07 PM
Well-I would say this- we have many shows listed, but a complete and total list is difficult to do. For example-I have a feeling the BBs did a number of local shows in 1962 that were not advertised and for which documentation is non existent.  Once we get into 1963 it gets better-but I am sure there are 20 shows that I know nothing about at the least.  One problem-it is easy to find shows in big cities like NY and Chicago-but it is very time consuming to obtain info on gigs in smaller cities- like Fort Wayne and Spokane (though I have done it).  You need to have some idea of a date and then obtain microfilm of the local paper from the time you want- which involves a library loan to your city-which takes time.  In 1963 the BBs played many small towns. Still-we uncovered (with help from Jon Stebbins and Dave Marks) almost all the dates from their Summer 63 tour-many in very obscure places.   Up to 1966 their touring was at least straight forward gigs-usually (but not always) advertised in papers but starting in 1966 they began to do many college gigs as well. Often these are only advertised in college papers-so it is a very difficult to track them down. For example-a Ball State show that I found from May 11 1966-was from a passing mention in an Indianapolis paper. Once I had the exact date, Ball State was happy to help. The show was a huge success= I would not be surprised if they appeared there again-but since I have no exact date, I can't ask the Ball State library to look- college librarians are busy-happy to help if you have a fairly exact date, but not willing to do huge research for you. So all I can do is wait and see if something gets mentioned online or in passing that gives me a lead.  It's possible that the shows would be advertised in the Muncie papers-but looking thru microfilm of Muncie papers-in the hopes of finding a show for which I have no exact date is not my idea of fun. Once we get into the 70s-the BBs played mainly colleges in 1971-74 period-very hard to find- I have found a ton-but it is alot of trial and error. That being said-1971 to 1975 are 85% complete I'd say-which is cool
1759  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: More updates to AGD's Bellagio Gigs/Sessions-including 1975 on: January 14, 2008, 12:00:18 PM
It appears that they spent a week in Florida. I found a show in Clearwater-which was played on Apr 12 1965- I have a great photo from the paper of them riding into the Jack Russell Stadium on a car with Glen Campbell. They played in Miami on the 15th and Daytona on Apr 17.  They may have played in Orlando on the 19th (as stated in Keith Badman) but I can't find any documentation. They were in Deleware on the 20th- so maybe they had a working vacation in Florida- I doubt they flew back to LA that week at all.
1760  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: More updates to AGD's Bellagio Gigs/Sessions-including 1975 on: January 13, 2008, 04:26:04 PM
I appreciate the post-actually we already list that one on the site-it was at City Island Ballpark- I have a photo of them onstage-with Glen Campbell (soon to be replaced fulltime by Bruce-but still playing some dates on this tour)
1761  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / More updates to AGD's Bellagio Gigs/Sessions-including 1975 on: January 13, 2008, 01:55:24 PM
For those that dig this stuff. The Gigs/sessions page at AGD's fantastic site has been updated-now includes 1975. As per usual-I handle the gigs, AGD the sessions. He has some excellent sources for the sessions. It also includes many new gig updates I found from the years 1962-1974-including Nov 22 1966 Ithaca College, Aug 20 and 21 1965 Sacramento, Mar 2 1962 Milikan HS, July 20 1969 Troy Armory, etc, etc. So there you go.  If anyone knows of any missing shows-let us know, don't be shy!
1762  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: what if Brian had only lived to age 24? on: January 03, 2008, 09:26:00 AM
One thing that you are not taking into account- every contract after their Capitol contract ended was posited on BW doing a big share of the writing.  It's not a sure thing that they would have been able to get a major label contract in the 70s without BW.   I doubt that the CBS deal would have happened...
1763  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Revised chronology of the BBs June 1969 tour of Europe on: December 22, 2007, 08:17:04 AM
One correction- The statement "NME has a picture of them on them at Brighton-is supposed to be on next line-about the dodgem cars)-oops
1764  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Revised chronology of the BBs June 1969 tour of Europe on: December 22, 2007, 08:15:41 AM
This is only for those interested in such trivia-otherwise don't waste yor time reading
Based on my consultation of relevant issues of Melody Maker, NME, Disc and Music Echo and other places...
May 29 1969-BBs arrive in London.  Bruce's interview with BBC "Scene and Heard" took place this day (Keith Badman seems to have carelessly read the relevant article in NME by Richard Green. Green names the show and date-Badman stated wrong show and put it on the 30th- NME has a picture of them on them in Brighton)
May 30 1969- Brighton concert (prior to the show the guys were filmed on dodgem- bumper cars as seen in American Band)
May 31 1969-Hammersmith Odeon
June 1 1969- Amsterdam and Rotterdam (confirmed by May 24 1969 NME)
June 2 1969- I believe that the BBs taped the Raiders-BB TV show on this date or else played Brussels on this date
June 3 1969- BBs in Bremen to tape  Beat Club TV show-Breakaway and Surfin USA (In the May 24 NME the group was scheduled to play Brussels on this date and to tape the Beat Club on June 11, then give a concert in Bremen on June 12. However, German fans all agree that no Bremen show took place on this tour and Beat Club aired on June 7 1969 with the BBs singing Breakaway-so Badman is correct about Beat Club date-plans must have been changed at the last minute--perhaps the group had trouble selling tickets -they also canceled a Munich show)
June 4 1969- according to the May 24 1969 NME the group was scheduled to tape a TV show in Paris-it is possible that the Midi Premiere show listed by Badman as June 16 was on this day.  The group did not, however, play a concert in Paris on this day-Badman is wrong-I have the French paper from that day-someone else was at the Olympia. It's possible that the group taped the Raiders-BB TV show this day or Brussels concert (they did these things on either June 2, 4, or 5)
June 6-9- UK shows as listed by Badman
June 10 1969- There was no show on this day-The Finsbury Astoria shows listed by Badman actually took place on June 22- They were added due to demand by UK fans
June 11 1969- THERE WAS NO BUDAPEST SHOW, despite Badman's listing- As far as I can tell the only shows the BBs played in Eastern Europe were in Czechoslovakia. The Melody Maker of June 14 1969 states that the group was hanging out in the UK (probably at the Brighton TM center-where Mike was interviewed by Richard Green) until Thursday June 12 when they left for Frankfurt
June 13 1969-Frankfurt show
June 14 1969-Berlin show
June 15 1969- Munich show was canceled
June 16 1969- Paris show at the Olympia filmed by Musicorama
June 17 1969- BBs in Prague
June 18 1969-Bratislava show
June 19 1969- Melody Maker of June 14 1969 says the group was scheduled to play at Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. Badman says that instead Mike and Bruce taped an app for Top of the Pops- I'll go with Keith on this- I assume he had access to BBC filming records
June 20 1969- Helsinki- Confirmed by Melody Maker
June 21 1969- Antwerp Pop Fest- BBs decided to appear at last minute- This was the last show with Paul Revere and the Raiders-who had to return to the states the next day-due to TV committments at home
June 22 1969- Tour ends with two added shows at Finsbury Park Astoria-with Marmalade
June 23-28? 1969-BBs hanging out-Mike was in Brighton and Ireland
June 29 1969- Mike back in NYC as confirmed by his passport (which appeared in 1976 Billboard montage)
(Thus show in Belgium listed by Badman as June 24 was either June 2, 3, 4 or 5 and BB-Raiders TV show was not taped on June 30, but probably on June 2, 3, 4, or 5). I may never be able to find the exact date of the Raiders-BB TV show as NCR TV has no records of filming date. But I bet I'll find the date for the Brusssels show someday...
Ian
(Also of note- The photo of the group on page 239 of Badman's book-with Mike consulting a Czech language phrase book-which Badman identifies as taken backstage before the Prague show-is actually a posed publicity picture taken earlier in the tour-for UK photographers-it appeared in the June 14 1969 NME-which means the photo is no later than June 7 or Cool
1765  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1981 Brian/Les Chan interview on: December 20, 2007, 11:33:52 AM
It is hard to know what happened to the film.  For example-there is an audio tape of the BBs app on David Frost (probably from May 71) where they sang Lady and Vegetables. Also Dennis discussed Two Lane Blacktop- so it makes you wonder where the film is...But noone can find it-Jon Stebbins looked into it. A shame-a very rare Dennis performance of Lady would be super cool to see.  Shows just weren't saved.
1766  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1981 Brian/Les Chan interview on: December 20, 2007, 09:51:19 AM
You are right-August 1968- so they appeared on all the big shows of the day- I wonder if the Cavett footage survives-it has never been on Youtube-but that doesn't mean anything. Of all the talk shows the one I'd really love to see is The Les Crane Show from May 2 1968-the group discussed TM and the Maharishi for quite a while- pretty positive that the footage is gone though.  The Tonight Show app aired the same day and they sang Our Hearts Were Full of Spring (on their July-Aug 1968 tour they sang the song with the introduction "perhaps you saw us sing this on the Tonight Show")
1767  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1981 Brian/Les Chan interview on: December 20, 2007, 06:40:28 AM
As far as the origins of the relationship- the BBs appeared on Mike Douglas three or four times in the 1960s-a few of these are on Youtube.  In those days his show was one of about five talk shows that attracted guests like the BBs- The main talk shows were The Tonight Show hosted by Johnny Carso, The Joey Bishop Show, The Merv Griffin Show, The Mike Douglas Show, The David Frost Show, and the Dick Cavett Show.  The BBs appeared on all of these shows in the late 60s except Dick Cavett
1768  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1981 Brian/Les Chan interview on: December 20, 2007, 06:36:33 AM
C-Man are you sure that they didn't appear again in 1982? Are you sure these are just repeats of the 1980 app on Mike Douglas?
1769  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1981 Brian/Les Chan interview on: December 19, 2007, 01:12:27 PM
I have a Mike Love and Al Jardine interview given to Pacific Stars and Stripes while they were playing there-but no exact date.  A two part app on Mike Douglas aired on January 5 and 8 and an app on Merv Griffin aired on Jan 6 1982- but all of these could have been taped prior to that tour. They were at Harrah's in Tahoe on Jan 15 1982
1770  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Top 5 unreleased right now! on: December 19, 2007, 01:02:13 PM
My top five are
1) You Are My Sunshine- Dennis's great vocal on this snippet deserves release
2) Thank Him- a great Brian demo
3) Carry Me Home- cool Dennis song
4) Big Sur-early version- One of Mike's finest moments
5) The Letter- I love Brian's vocal on this
1771  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1981 Brian/Les Chan interview on: December 19, 2007, 11:19:06 AM
I must say that if someone can give me the exact dates of the South Africa I'll send them a monetary award- I have searched and searched-but all I can find is late Dec 1981-Early Jan 1982. I want the exact dates!! Anyone know???
1772  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys June 1969 European tour.... on: December 15, 2007, 12:33:48 PM
Aegir-while the book has many date errors-it is still a compendium of quite a bit of otherwise difficult to find interviews, articles, facts, trivia, etc- and it has many cool photos. Plus-while many dates have problems, many are accurate-so I do recommend it.  Also-while some dates are wrong-you now have the Gigs/Sessions section of Bellagio to provide corrections-so I'd buy it and a sharpie to cross out and amend dates (if you really care)
1773  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / The Beach Boys June 1969 European tour.... on: December 15, 2007, 09:45:41 AM
As a historian, I have found that whenever one does research into any subject they usually find more questions than answers.   The reason that new books are continually written on the same subjects is because "the facts" are never gathered together satisfactorily in one place, to satisfy all parties.
Problems present themselves with Keith Badman's research on the group's European  Tour of June 1969.   I assumed that Mr. Badman's strong suit was European Beach Boy history and that his info on British and European tours would be beyond reproach-but this is not the case.   While perusing my copy of the June 14 1969 NME I found that the 2 Finsbury Astoria concerts listed by Keith as played on June 10 1969 with Marmalade actually were scheduled for the end of the tour- they were played on June 22 1969.  Furthermore, the group had been touring with Paul Revere and the Raiders and the only reason that they played these shows with Marmalade was because Revere and the Raiders had to return to the states.  So a new problem- if Paul Revere and the Raiders returned to the states before June 22, then there is no way that they played a June 24 show in Belgium or taped a TV show on June 30 1969.  Well-you may say-perhaps they returned to Europe a few days later. They didn't.  Also-Keith lists the Raiders-Beach Boys TV show as taped on June 30 1969- besides the fact that the Raiders were not there, Mike Love was already in New York.  How do you know this Ian?-you may well ask.  In a special issue of Billboard from 1976-there is a 15 page pullout section celebrating the BBs 15th anniversary. Amongst the items reprinted is a copy of Mike Love's 1969-75 passport- it shows that Mr Love cleared New York customs on June 29 1969- hence he was back in the states a day before Mr. Badman says the show was taped.   What about the Brussels show on June 24?  If one peruses the NME from May 24 1969 the group was scheduled to play in Brussels on June 3 1969- most likely this was the date of that show.  So-it appears that the tour ended on June 22 and then Mike spent some time at the Brighton Meditation center.  This is not meant as an attack per se on Mr Badman-but it is meant to illustrate that fans should not use dates in that book without caution.  I myself was guilty of that when I first started posting years ago- and I have learned to my chagrin that one must go back and look it up themselves.  Caveat Emptor
1774  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smile Reference Threads / Re: The Definitive Vocal Credits Thread... on: December 11, 2007, 08:15:25 AM
Has Our Team been discussed?- a silly song, but I was always curious who sang all the parts- I know Al sang a big part-but Brian took a verse too or am I wrong?
1775  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys early '80s TV interview on: December 11, 2007, 08:00:59 AM
Yeah-they celebrated their 20th in Dec 80 rather than 81. They got their stars on the Hollywood walk of fame and played a  big new years eve show at the Forum- plus a party at a hotel.  Dennis skipped the Walk of fame ceremony-not sure about his attendance at the concert (although I may have an article at home...)
