Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Cocktails-amazing song

Just curious-does anyone else find "Cocktails" to be a devastatingly powerful song...It is actually kind of hard to listen to for me. That song really seems to reveal all the pain and heartache within Dennis. As people often said about Brian-it shows that Dennis could write music that really gets to you on an emotional level. By the way-in the middle of the song is he speaking spanish-the singing is incredible-but it is one of those songs where the lyrics are hard to make out at times.

One that I wish existed was their May 2 1968 app on the Les Crane Show (as they were in NY that day for the Johnny Carson Tonight Show-they probably taped the Crane show in LA a week or so before). They apparently were the main featured guest and expounded at length to Crane about TM and the Maharishi. Would have been interesting to see this. Also-their app on Boss City in Oct 1966-premiering Good Vibrations. That would be cool to see. Still I think I'd trade them all-if a tape showed up of that filmed BB concert in San Bernardino in Nov 1963 showed up. By the way-Ed-that footage in Endless Harmony-when Elvis Costello is describing seeing the BBs in 1972 and being impressed by Dennis-there is a brief clip of Dennis and the BBs onstage in an indoor setting (circa 72-Dennis with short hair)-did you film that? If so where and when?

Ed I don't have that much info on the Happening shows-but your story is very interesting. I know that they taped one app in 1968 while in NY-promoting the Friends album. They also appeared in the summer of 69-taped in LA at the actual set and that they played three songs Cotton Fields, Breakaway and a version of Johnny B. Goode with the Raiders. TV guides at that time mentioned the songs they'd be playing-so I assume it was taped in advance and they got a look. If they did play Breakaway-then Carl must have showed up too. Like you said-those shows appear to be lost. It is a real shame that certain TV apps are gone. Audio tapes exist of the BBs on Johnny Carson in 68 but the Carson people told me the actual footage is gone, same thing for the David Frost where Dennis sang Forever and Lady and discussed Two Lane Blacktop. I have heard the audio which is fantastic but the Frost people told me they don't have the footage-a real crime-Dennis in his prime. Similarly-there is an audio tape of Dennis singing "Slip on Through" on a TV show and the tape is listed as coming from the Dennis Whalley (actually Wholey) Show. It aired in Dec 1969-probably taped in Nov 1969 when the BBs were in the midwest. Again-a real crime that footage of Dennis singing slip on through is gone.

By the way-this is as good a place as any to mention a few corrections to my first article (TV/Film Part 1) that I have learned since then. I now know that the BBs were filmed by local station Channel 18 on Nov 30 1963 live from a concert in San Bernardino. Footage is probably long gone-but boy would that be a cool thing to see! In regard to Nov 1964 Europe tour-I didn't know exact dates of TV apps in Italy and Germany-but I have since found out that the BBs taped an app on RAI TV in Rome on Nov 11 1964 and an app on TV in Munich on Nov 13. I also learned, from Ron Swallow, that in May 1965 the BBs actually showed up for that Ed Sullivan app-but the show ran long and they were asked to reschedule (which they never did). Under 1969 I listed a Hy Lit show as taped on July 12-in fact it was taped July 18 and aired July 19 1969. I also found out more info on that August 1969 Happening app-although I doubted it-they did perform Cotton Fields, as well as Breakaway and Johnny B. Goode. I also omitted a 1969 TV app-The BBs taped the Dennis Wholey Show in Cincinnati-Dennis sang "Slip on Through"-only recently completed (an audio tape of this exists). Under 1970 I stated that the Something Else footage of "Good Vibrations" has never been seen since-in fact this was not a straight performance clip-it was more of a music video and some of the footage shot for it is in Endless Harmony-like Mike meditating, Dennis (with beard) kissing a girl on some steps, etc.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / BBsTV article Part 2

Thought I'd start a thread-if anyone reads the article I contributed to ESQ (with contributions from David Beard) on the BBs TV/film apps Part II. If anyone has any comments, questions or corrections I am all ears. Looking at it again-I think that maybe it is a bit too fact oriented and not descriptive enough but hopefully it provides a lot of info-so that next time you see a clip you know where it came from. I'm sure I missed some apps-maybe someone knows of some I missed.

You're right about Brian looking similar to the way he did in the Radiant Radish shot-mainly because that shot was also taken for the 1971 Rolling Stone. A lot of writers have stated that the Radish closed in July 1970 but actually it was still open in 1971. The error started because a Rolling Stone article in 1970 stated that Brian closed the Radish for the day and went over to tape a radio interview. He did indeed close the Radish for the day but not for good. It was still open in June 1971 when the RS piece was being written and he posed for a photo there.

I agree with all you said-It is really sad how together Dennis seems at that show-and still looking quite good. It's a shame that by the end of that year he was hell-bent on the road to ruin. So the video captures him just before he set about destroying himself. Compare the Dennis in that video to the man on the drums in Atlantic City in 1983...Like night and day. Very sad.

While I am not sure if it was always this way-especially in the late 70s when he had personal problems-Carl was certainly in charge of the band in the early 70s. When Toni Sheare (Tennile) joined in March 1972 on acoustic piano-she recalled that Daryl Dragon told her that she had to audition for Carl at a rehearsal and he'd decide if she'd stay or go. She got the gig of course.

I have an article from 1973 in which they interview Dick Clark, who had bought the rights to re-release the film. He says that he couldn't reach an agreement with the BBs, so their footage was cut-Nothing at all to do with Murry. I tend to believe this story (especially as it makes more sense-Murry was no longer their manager when they did TAMI). The article says that the BBs recieved 40, 000 to appear in the film-far more than the Stones, who had yet to break big in the states-though they soon would.

Asking that question shows that you don't really understand the Beach Boys group dynamics. Brian was raised by his father to believe that anyone outside the family can't be trusted...and that family is all that matters...So he had huge psychological reasons for not "abandoning" his family. As has been written a thousand times-the BBs are not a group like the Kinks or Beatles...they are three brothers, a cousin and a friend. And that friend had to wait a long time to become a full corporate member

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: History of Brian's reputation

I strongly question your notion that he "destroyed them." I think some of the BBs themselves have said that Brian actually gave them a lot-the music he created with and for them in the 60s has made them all very rich and enabled them to keep touring at nice venues when many lesser 60s bands are playing small clubs and it made many people happy...So I think you are really exaggerating with that "destroyed" idea-everyone did just fine monetarily and lived well. If you mean that in 68 he stopped helping them on purpose-I also doubt that-he still tried to get them a hit (Breakaway) in 69 and always contributed as much as his health allowed. He destroyed himself not the BBs.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love's belated songwriting credits

In the Goldmine interview that Mike did in the 90s he discussed many of these songs and made clear that often it wasn't 50-50. On some songs Brian wrote most of the lyrics but Mike added a hook, in others Brian had a chorus or title and Mike wrote verses, in a few Mike said he just added a line. I agree however that its irrelevant-because other songwriting legends like Jagger-Richards and Lennon-McCartney worked the same way. For example-allegedly Keith Richards and Brian Jones wrote almost all of Ruby Tuesday, but Mick added something and gets credit (Brian Jones if he did contribute got nothing)...some Paul songs, have only small contributions from John and vice-versa but they didn't quibble about it too much.

According to a BB Fun interview with Mike's then manager-the Nov 1981 solo tour was to start on Nov 2 in Gainesville and conclude on Nov 15. Since he was in Boston on Nov 13-clearly the plan was to go from South to North mostly along the east coast. The BB tour concluded on Nov 1, but Mike's manager said Mike loved to work and didn't need days off-he'd tour 365 days a year if he could. It is clear that Mike has no problems with endless travel and hotels-say what you will about the man-he has always been a very hard worker.

The dates of all the shows I listed are correct-I have ads for all those shows from the relevant newspapers-He was indeed scheduled to play the Agora in Atlanta and yes he was also scheduled to play in Florida on the 12th-so he flew there that day I guess (hardly impossible in this day and age). Now-as to whether any of these shows were canceled I can't say-but they were scheduled.
