That's cool to hear-I wasn't aware he was at that show.  A fan who attended the BBs app in Anaheim (Melodyland show-missing from Badman book-but reviewed in LA Times) on Sept 27 and 28 1968 also saw Brian at those shows.  The fan had attended Hawthorne HS and Brian ended up conversing with him throughout the show-with lots of questions about old tecahers and students.  He also took part in a meet and greet before the show-it was a circular theatre and depending what entrance you came in you got to meet a different BB-the real lucky ones came face to face with Brian

actually I am pretty positive about it-all these pics were mostly taken by Earl Leaf and appeared in Teen Magazine in 1970-71 issues-in his monthly column. I have to look through them-but pretty sure the photos were in issues before April 71.  By the way Carl isn't exactly clean shaven and the beard was already coming back

But as to the Whisky shows-I think all those shots are from the Nov 70 engagement. They were there for four days-only two with Brian.  In a wider color shot with Brian-you also see Daryl and Ed Carter were there in 70 too.  I think Carl shaved midway through-he was just starting his beard phase then and may have decided to chuck it then thought better of it.  He did have a beard again by Nov 16 when they headed to Europe.

Very cool that you figured that out...That is fantastic.  I thought it looked like late 68 but I couldn't think of the occasion. Very cool discovery

One possibility for that photo...Jack Lloyd told me that he accompanied Brian, Carl, Al and wives and maybe Bruce to see Elvis in Las Vegas during his first and most exciting engagement there (he opened on July 31 1969 and was there three weeks).  BBs were on tour and weren't back till Aug 3-so Aug 3 or after.  He was emphatic that Brian joined them to see Elvis.  But he said that when he tried to get permission to bring them up to Elvis room after the show one of the "Memphis Mafia" said it was too crowded up there and  no more visitors could come up.  So that could be from that night???
Would be hard to prove this though

there is no doubt that 1970 was a year of lost opportunities in terms of Brian-he was coming back and then retreated again.  But I think he still kind of had it together till 1973.  I think Murry's death in June 73 was a big deal-that kind of began the real decline

The photos of Brian singing with Marilyn et al-were taken at a showcase/party that the BBs threw for the Flame in the summer of 1970-four or five months before the Whiskey gigs.  Around the time Jack Rieley appeared on the scene

Be warned!!! The Getty had almost no accurate dates for their photos.  Indeed I helped them date about 200 of the photos-but they still have plenty of incorrect listings-that is certainly one-that is not 1970 at the Whiskey 100%  There is a lot of inaccuracy out there

You'll note that just like now Brian had his ups and downs. Only at most a month before he taped an app on American Bandstand with Celebration and looked pretty up there-even answering questions from Mr. Clark.

Yes-some boots stated that the song is from an appearance on Australian TV and listed is as Dennis Whalley show 1970.  Actually-the BBs appeared on the Dennis Wholey show in Dec 1969 (probably taped Nov 69) which taped in Cincinatti and was syndicated. So it is possible they premiered "Slip On Through" (which was already recorded) there.
1336  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Still I Dream Of It alternate take on: August 17, 2011, 04:16:46 AM
There is also a demo version that appeared in the 1995 doc-I Just Wasn't Made For These Times-which I prefer to the more fully produced one (indeed-I like a lot of Brian's demos from that period more than the finished versions)

Yeah-however sometimes things survive in poor quality because they were taped by fans.  For example I have a very poor quality video of John and Paul on that 1968 Tonight show-obviously filmed off of the TV.  An audio tape of the interview is also around-which by the way is nowhere near as bad as John later said it was (Joe Garagiola knew a litte about them).  I have also heard the audio portion of the erased Beach Boys 1968 Tonight Show.  There is also audio of the erased May 71 David Frost where Dennis sang Lady and discussed Two Lane Blacktop-though the video is apparently history.  I have also heard audio of the BBs 69 app on Happening-with Paul Revere, etc...so I assume fans taped these off the TV

Right-in fact some of them have quotes from old Brian interviews-like where he discusses the Pet Sounds album and how he had Dennis sing a special way-this is from a 1966 interview. When he says Pet Sounds is the best album but Friends is his favorite-because he can listen to it any time, etc-that is from the 1970 Radio Pacifica interview, etc

The PM Magazine segment was filmed at the annual Day on the Green  Concert in Oakland on May 28 1978.  The uncut piece has a little footage of the concert

By the way-although the Frost site and Keith Badman's book list that app as taped May 7 1971-it was not.  It was taped on March 1 1971 and there is 100% proof of that.  A reporter from Crawdaddy was following the band around-saw the Feb 24 Carnegie gig-then met up with the day after they played in Boston (Feb 28) and heard them taoe those songs at the Frost show (in NYC).  The reporter mentions the songs performed.  It's possible that they taped the app where Dennis sings Forever and Fallin' in Love on May 7 though.  I actually contacted the Frost show archives and they were clueless as to when things were actually taped and base their info on books like Badman. They don't have good records and according to them-neither app exists-though clearly at least the Cool Cool Water app does-but it is not in their archives.
1341  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: American Band movie--a question about it on: July 04, 2011, 11:29:07 AM
Sorry-but the BBs didn't fly back to California after Michigan.  They went on to NY and from there to Paris.. Badman's dating of the promo film is incorrect (not October 23)

Interesting interview that Brian did for the Old Grey Whistle Test in August 1976 is there-American Band used large chunks of it as either narration or straight clips.  I never saw the whole thing-its pretty cool.  I've never seen Brian talk about 20/20, Sunflower, Surf's Up and Friends anywhere else on a video.  Interesting also that he mentions how much he loves Donavan-I've never seen him mention him anywhere else
1343  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: American Band movie--a question about it on: June 29, 2011, 03:51:18 AM
American Band uses interview footage shot for the 76 special (Brian in bed, his birthday, Dennis and Carl in the studio discussing Murry, etc) also footage shot in 1980 for the Twentieth Anniversary special (Dennis on his boat, Carl on the beach, etc) and some footage shot in 1981 for another TV show (Carl discussing why he left the band, etc) and some linking footage actually shot in 83-84 (such as Al and the Hawthorne Football team)

Taken at the Teenage Fair in Burbank in April 1963-there are a few other photos of this event-including one with the president of their fan club.

By the way-I should mention that while they were in London in Dec 67-Mike and Bruce attended the premiere party for Magical Mystery Tour and hung out with all four fabs there. It was written up in NME.  And of course-Mike spent a month with the Beatles in India in Feb-Mar 68.

Brian was not on the Dec 67 trip to Europe.  They only played one concert on that trip-the UNICEF show.  However-the BBs were so jazzed by the Maharishi and wanted Brian to get into TM as well-so when the Maharishi visited the U.S. to lecture at some colleges (January 19-23 1968) the BBs went east to see him and meet with him again and convinced Brian to go with them.  He recieved his mantra from Maharishi at a private meeting in NY-photographed by Linda Eastman (soon to become Mrs. McCartney).  As we all know-the Wilson's drifted away from TM-but Mike and Al remained devoted.

There were two tapings.  Brian appeared solo and then at some point the BBs taped an appearance.  The Brian appearance was not advertised but the BBs app to sing Good Vibrations was.  All the ads list the BBs appearing on Nov 19 1966.  They were on the east coast then doing a tour-so no possible way it was live.  I have an article in which they interview a young lady who won a contest and got to meet the BBs (not Brian) and the Turtles when the two groups taped an app on Boss City for future airing.  So perhaps due to their busy schedule they taped their clips.  The article is from late Oct-when the BBs were in Europe and states that the app happened a week earlier-but no exact date-hence Oct 14-20 1966 is the best I can do.  This makes sense-the BBs were about to leave for over a month and did some last minute promotion in California.  I also have an article on Boss City in which it is stated that many bands tape what we call today music videos for that show and that the BBs and others asked if they could use the clips elsewhere too.
1348  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Byrds Live? on: June 12, 2011, 08:57:36 AM
The BBs and Byrds played a wild show in Virginia in Nov 1971.  The crowd was expecting the two fading groups to play strictly nostalgia and they both redused to give the people what they wanted.  McGuinn's Byrds opened and were tolerated but when the BBs also chose to stick mostly to 1968-1971 material the crowd got very hostile and there were some very mean spirited exchanges betweeen audience and band.  Finally when the BBs got into the second set and played more oldies everyone calmed down.  Shows like that illustrate why the BBs finally changed the set in 74 and intermixed the oldies more with the new stuff.

Ah-I found the source of your confusion.  The BBs and the Dead headlined another show at the Coliseum on June 8 1974 and that had Commander Cody and the New Riders as opening acts.  But that show had no Chicago
1350  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis two lane blacktop interview on: June 12, 2011, 08:08:26 AM
Despite his brash exterior, concert reviews bear out the fact that Dennis was always more at ease behind the drums than up front. When he sang a few numbers at 1970 and 71 shows he often asked for near darkness or didn't emote properly or seemed ill at ease-he wasn't a natural frontman-though he sure had talent
