Phil Shenale and Sterling Smith both played 78-79. Ron Altbach was not in the band in 73 or 74. He joined in 75.

Adrian Baker didn't join in May 1981.  He was invited to guest at a gig at Westbury Music Fair in early June 1981 and then joined the band for their tour that started on June 20 1981. Jeff Foskett's first gig was South Africa-(Dec 24 1981) after playing with Mike's band that year.  Also Dennis Dragon wasn't just a drummer in 71-72. He filled in on many tours starting in 1968.

The "Slip On Through" heard on boots is from the syndicated TV show "The Dennis Wholey Show" that was taped in Cincinnati in the late 60s and early 70s.  The appearance was taped in November 1969.

Cool-I knew he played those shows.  I was curious though a bout some of the others.  The November 81 tour was badly promoted and a bunch of dates ended up being canceled.  So since the New Haven show was canceled and so was one in Detroit, I was curious if anyone actually saw him in Boston at the Channel Club or maybe it was canceled too?  The article about the Detroit (Harpo's) cancelation said no one in town was even aware that he had a solo album out-so he probably wasn't getting any radio play and hadn't advertised the gig too well (No ads for it in the Detroit News).  I know he did play the Savoy in NYC-I know someone who saw it-Jeff Foskett and Randall Kirsch were dressed in 60s BB attire-striped shirts and white pants.  He played songs from his solo album and lots of BB songs.  'Calendar Girl', 'Be My Baby,' things like that.  Bobby Figueroa played some of the shows in August and sang 'Darlin.'

I brought this up once before, but I am working on something and thought I'd ask again.  Did anyone who posts see Mike live in 1981 with the Endless Summer Beach Band?  What do you recall?  I have ads and a few reviews-but I am unsure about the tours-were these poorly attended, were some canceled (I know Toad's Place in New Haven was canceled and a show in Philly, also a show at Harpo's in Detroit was canceled) Did anyone see Mike at the Savoy in NYC (that show was played) or at the Channel Club in Boston in Nov 81? Anyone see Mike at the Sheraton Lounge in Portland, OR in Dec 81?  If so let me know what you recall about these events.  The shows reviewed in papers were the Bayou in DC in Nov 81 and the August 81 app at the Country Club in LA.  Feel free to PM me about the 81 tour.
1307  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What fans thought of BW 89 back in 89 on: December 16, 2011, 03:41:14 AM
I think it has some major flaws but is still the best non-compilation Beach Boys related release in the 1980-2000 period.  It is certainly far more listenable than The Beach Boys (1985), Still Cruisin' (1989) and the dreadful Summer in Paradise (1992).  That's not necessarily saying much though.
1308  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sacramento & Fred Vail on: November 18, 2011, 05:29:07 PM
I trust Fred's memory here.  Remember Brian also stated that they wrote Fun, Fun, Fun in Australia-when in fact they recorded the song before visiting the country!! (This argument with Mike is in Endless Harmony-Mike recalls correctly it was Salt Lake City)

Personally my favorite part of the book was the great sessionography by Craig and Alan, which is outstanding, and all the great photos and illustrations.  And of course seeing my name among the special thanks was a personal thrill.  Only disappointment-No AGD essay and no Jon Stebbins essay!!!
I have only listened to disc 1 so far-so back to the CD player for me!
1310  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / World of People segment (actually aired Dec 1980) on: October 30, 2011, 12:58:46 PM
I found this on Youtube-search Youtube under Beach Boys TV segment 1981 and up comes a very rare clip from a show called World of People with backstage footage of the BBs at Caesar's Tahoe in Oct 1980.  They talk about the upcoming Forum anniversary show.  The show aired on Dec 1 1980 (though it is listed as 1981). I have never seen it before-pretty cool (catch it now-it will probably disappear by next week)
1311  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Here it is! Video footage of the BB recording Good Vibrations vocals!!!! on: October 29, 2011, 10:21:47 AM
While the Badman book has a lot of errors-for what it's worth he mentions in his book (under October 1966) that the BBs filmed a few different promo films for GV including one of them "rehearsing" in the studio that he states aired on French TV at least once.  This footage could be what he is referring to
1312  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson voice/songs on Beach Boys '85 on: October 17, 2011, 05:56:25 PM
I must agree-I think that the album sounds very dated.  As crazy as it sounds, Beach Boys Records of the 60s sound far more modern and vital than an album from 1985.  The whole decision to use Steve Levine-famous for producing Culture Club was ridiculous to begin with.  It was clearly an attempt to be commercial and fit into what was happening in 1985 and that is what the BBs wanted in 85-a record that would sound contemporary-of its time-rather than for all time.  I think to some extent this is a problem with Carl's solo albums as well.  Instead of making a really amazing R&B record-which he clearly had in him to do-he was convinced by his advisors to try to make a contemporary record that might get on the charts and as a result only succeeded in making a generic, harmless album.  A shame really-because the opportunity was lost.
1313  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: what if Jan Berry had died in 66? on: October 17, 2011, 05:48:38 PM
I don't think his legacy would be that different, since with all due respect to his memory I don't think he did much of particular note after 1966.  So he will always be remembered for the work he did in the early to mid sixties.
1314  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: September 19, 1964 on: October 16, 2011, 08:11:59 PM
Yes-the Stones directly preceded the Beach Boys on the bill
1315  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: September 19, 1964 on: October 16, 2011, 09:02:39 AM
Yes-Brian played the Sept 64 show and Glen played the Birmingham show in May 65. Bruce first appeared in Birmingham in Oct 1966.
1316  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jon's new book on: September 16, 2011, 03:12:12 PM
Got my copy and it is a fun read (though I have only read a quarter of it so far).  Opinionated but factual-which is a nice combination.  What I like about Jon's writing-is that he is always honest-if he thinks an album was atrocious he isn't afraid to say it.  He also gives every member their due and reminds people that while Brian was a genius, other members were talented too.
1317  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: GOOD VIBRATIONS promo video ex-ci-ta-tions on: September 07, 2011, 11:25:03 AM
It's a pretty amateurish video-but then again the Beatles video for Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane-filmed only a few months later-are just as amateurish. I don't think anyone was losing any sleep over making these things.  I like the I Can Hear Music one because it captures them in the studio (though actually recording Time To Get Alone) which is neat.  Everyone was doing these-ever seen the Who video for Happy Jack-where they are burglars? Stones did one for We Love You and Child of the Moon.  Best Stones was is Jumpin' Jack Flash-really the best realization of the Stones on video ever.

Andrew-I have been meaning to update that-but check my above post to see why that date is wrong
1319  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: GOOD VIBRATIONS promo video ex-ci-ta-tions on: September 07, 2011, 10:51:22 AM
Just to save time on explaining this-Disc & Music Echo (Nov 5, 1966) is the source for them flying into Paris from NY.  And I have two articles about there time in Paris that explain that they arrived early in the morning on Oct 24 1966 and spent that day sightseeing.  Murry was with them (bizarrely) and he ended up entertaining the press when the BBs skipped a press conference).
1320  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: GOOD VIBRATIONS promo video ex-ci-ta-tions on: September 07, 2011, 10:46:01 AM
Should note that Keith Badman stated in his book that the film was directed by Brian and shot on Oct 23, 1966.  However that date is not possible. The BBs flew to Europe from NY (they were already in Paris on October 24-a day before the Paris show) Hence-the BBs never returned to the West Coast after the Michigan shows (this makes perfect sense-since otherwise why would Brian fly back alone).  So-since they played a show at Lansing on Oct 21 (badman misdated that show to Dec 66) and Ann Arbor on Oct 22-the absolute latest they could have filmed it was Oct 20 1966-but since they probably had lots to do before leaving town for over a month-I'd argue for sometime between Oct 14 and 19 1966.
1321  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: August 25, 2011, 09:54:06 AM
It is. Filmed in 83 at one of the last shows with all 6 BBs
1322  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Darian and SMiLE on: August 23, 2011, 11:50:10 AM
Right-as discussed here ad nauseam- Smile is an album that Brian and the BBs worked on off and on from the Summer of 66 to the spring of 67 and then abandoned.  BWPS is a project in which Smile songs were re-recorded or finished in 2004. So Darian had a hand in BWPS-but nothing to do with Smile and therefore nothing to do with the upcoming Smile Sessions CD
1323  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who are these people? on: August 23, 2011, 11:15:28 AM
I agree 100% with what Jon said.  Often what happens is someone makes a statement that is sort of true-but they make it too blanket a statement.  Good example-is Mike's comment in Endless Harmony that after Smile-Brian was in bed, wouldn't come out, couldn't do anything.  Clearly that is too absolute and it is easy to pop holes in it-but he probably, in his own mind, sees that period as one in which Brian was basically absent.
1324  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who are these people? on: August 23, 2011, 03:12:34 AM
Being in the hospital doesn't mean he still didn't go out or smile! There are pictures of him smiling in 1970!  He also did shows with the BBs in 1970 and very, long and lucid interviews around that time.
1325  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who are these people? on: August 22, 2011, 03:53:41 PM
That's cool to hear-I wasn't aware he was at that show.  A fan who attended the BBs app in Anaheim (Melodyland show-missing from Badman book-but reviewed in LA Times) on Sept 27 and 28 1968 also saw Brian at those shows.  The fan had attended Hawthorne HS and Brian ended up conversing with him throughout the show-with lots of questions about old tecahers and students.  He also took part in a meet and greet before the show-it was a circular theatre and depending what entrance you came in you got to meet a different BB-the real lucky ones came face to face with Brian
