Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Paul McCartney on Vegetables

I have heard many times, as I am sure most of you that Paul was in the sessions for Vegetables. Though, I have not heard him talking or referred to in any of the sessions for Vegetables. I know he was just chewing vegetables, but I would think that some conversation would exist in the sessions and would have been saved. But none have come out. Anyone have any information on this? I have a hard time believing if they existed in the vaults, it would have been in the Smile Sessions box, or Sunshine Tomorrow. Unless there is a legal reason they can't or the tapes were lost. Or he never talked while the tapes were rolling.
I was ready to credit Sir Paul with "veggie munching" in the 2011 SMiLE Sessions box set sessionography, but since no tapes were found with his voice or reference to him, we figured I'd better not. Too hard to say that any veggie munching on his part remained on tape through the final stages of production. Are there isolated tapes of just munching sounds? I wonder if any slight grunts which might accompany the munching sounds might be able to be audibly forensically identifiable as Paul. Seriously! The isolated crunching is included as a secret track on the Smile Sessions box set. None of the secret tracks have ever been on youtube though for some reason. Wow. I own the box set, but must confess to never having listened through to every last morsel in its entirety, and definitely wasn't looking for hidden tracks. Do you know what disc? Wikipedia says it's at the end of Disc Three, along with the isolated Workshop sounds. Plus, the isolated wood burning sounds from "Fire" is hidden at the end of Disc Four, while a tape rewind of "Good Vibrations" is at the end of Disc Five. I've only ever heard the burning wood track, at one point, I even considered buying the entire set just to hear those other three!

in my opinion, Mike has never really been concerned with music as art. it's commerce pure and simple, with the added perks of celebrity and the lifestyle it affords him.
Take for example, the story Mike always tells about the inspiration for the song "Wild Honey". Starting at that jar of honey, he's not thinking, "gee, this gives me a really good idea for this groovy song". He's thinking something more like, "I could maybe get a hit out of this idea", if that makes sense lol.

I really think that a finished Lei'd In Hawaii album as presented on Sunshine Tomorrow had a good chance of being a hit and in that event given them some much-needed breathing room with Capitol. Obviously things went differently and I'm grateful for the music they recorded for Wild Honey/Friends and 20/20, but with a hit live album in '67 you might have seen more realized versions of those albums and Brian sticking around longer.
I would have loved to see Lei'd in Hawaii released back then, but the overdubbed audience would have just ruined it for me IMO. It's the reason that I really don't like the original Party! album, but I adore the "uncovered" mix. I'm here to listen to the band play, not to hear clapping and screaming girls!

- "Crack the Whip" and "When I Get Mad (I Just Play My Drums)", both Jasper Daily collobrations with Brian. If "Teeter Totter Love" was any indication, it's best this remained on the cutting room floor Both lost. - "Good News" and "Good Time Mama", both recorded during the Smiley Smile sessions Previously talked about in one of the Sunshine Tomorrow topics. "Good News" was deemed unreleasable, and no tapes for "Good Time Mama" exist (and has been theorized to have just been a working title for the last section of "She's Goin' Bald". - "New Song", Our Happy Home", "You're As Cool As Can Be", "My Little Red Book": all of them exist and seem releasable, only "My Little Red Book" has been booted "New Song" actually HAS been booted, commonly referred to as "Indian Wisdom", "Spanish Guitar Instrumental", "Margarita", etc. - "You Never Give Me Your Money": YES PLEASE (if it's anything more than a very loose post-session jam) That's exactly what it is. A run-through take of "Good Time" transitioned into a very loose, incomplete jam of "You Never Give Me Your Money". - "Spark In the Dark", "Body Talk", "Is Jack Reilly Superman?", "Gimme Some Lovin'", "Rooftop Harry", "Telephone Backgrounds": all sound quite intriguing, and would be good to find out if "Spark In the Dark" has any relation to "Funky Pretty" or if it's just a term Brian likes "Gimme Some Lovin'" is lost. Hard to say if "Is Jack Rieley Superman" was even recorded, or it was even its own song as opposed to a temporary name given to another W.I.P. track. "Spark in the Dark" has no relation to "Funky Pretty". Apparently, it's an instrumental featuring a riff later heard in Brian's "Chain Reaction of Love".

Man oh man oh man oh man oh man oh man...
This album is perfect. Just perfect. From the progressive remix of "Fall Breaks and Back to Winter", to the beautiful stereo mix of the "Water Chant", I can't get enough of this beautiful collection of music. "Game of Love" and "Honey Get Home" TOTALLY exceeded my expectations, I'm so glad to finally hear them after all these years of speculation! Happy to hear "A Thing or Two" earning some much-needed positive reception from listeners. That's always been one of my favorite tracks off of Wild Honey, but I've seen some criticism of it in the past. And holy hell, that second version of "All Day All Night"! I could go on and on about everything that I adore about this set, but I think I'll just let the music speak for itself.
Thank you, and God bless The Beach Boys, Alan Boyd, Mark Linett, Howie Edelson, Jerry Schilling, and everyone else who made Sunshine Tomorrow a reality for us fans!

most stories and documentaries seem to suggest Brian collapsed right after 'Smile'. 'Wild Honey' is evidence this is not true. Brian is all over this, and Friends and Sunflower.
IMO, Brian had as much involvement with Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, and Friends as he did with Pet Sounds and SMiLE.

I've listened to it, and I gotta say, I really like who you decide to cover some of the more overlooked BB's songs. When I first clicked on the link, I was only expecting you to cover only the musical portions of the track, like the "Fairy Tale Music" collage off of the Good Vibrations box set. But nope, you covered the entire 10 minute track. That definitely takes dedication! Keep up the good work man!

Thanks for the review Ed! BTW, wasn't it actually Carl who referred to Smiley Smile as a "bunt instead of a grand slam"?
Was it? I meant to look up the exact quote, but could have sworn it was Dennis. According to the wikipedia article on Smiley Smile, authors Philip Lambert and Jim DeRogatis attribute the quote to Carl. I wouldn't have been surprised if some people attributed it to Dennis, as he was pretty openly critical on some of the groups' later albums like 15 Big Ones and MIU Album.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Beatles Survivor #9: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band FINAL ROUND!!!

It'll be a losing fight for sure, but my favorite track off of Sgt. Pepper's is definitely "She's Leaving Home". Such a sweet and heartbreaking song, John and Pauls' vocal exchanges during the chorus are certainly a highlight of the track. However, the mono version certainly has the stereo version beaten. The stereo mix is just too slow, so it's a little bit more of a chore to get through. The faster mono version is practically perfect in my eyes though, so it earns my vote!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Would Brian have continued to fuse classical and pop had Smile been released?

Seeing and hearing all of the work Brian put into SMiLE, I always assumed that had it been released in early 1967, Brian would have been somewhat "burned-out" from working on music that complex/complicated. It's my guess that Wild Honey (an album described by members of the group as "music to cool down to" or whatever) still would have happened, though maybe a few months earlier. Same goes for other SMiLE-esque tracks such as "Cool Cool Water" and "Can't Wait Too Long". With a Wild Honey release in, let's say, October of 1967, the Beach Boys would've been a good year ahead of the Beatles of the Rolling Stones in the "back to basics" approach.
