Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Most Complex Brian Wilson Compositions

I think one of Brian's most complex is Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder). Some pretty complex tihngs going on in there.
I can't believe I forgot that one! The chords Brian used are so cool, very jazzy in a sense...he was really starting to like those diminished chords around that time. And that string arrangment blows me away every time. There aren't any diminished chords in this one, but what the hell... Whats so complex about a diminished chord?

Except it was recorded in 1970.
Yes siree Bob! Rejected for Sunflower, right? To my ears it has a SMiLE like quality to it. My favorite imagery from the song is the part about the old lady talking about "her great loss" whom I imagine is her dead husband, then he sees some little girls skipping and giggling about boys.. So great.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Lucky Old Sun Visuals

So I was wondering if the visuals which were being shown behind Brian at the Luck Old Sun shows will be available somehow for the official release (aside from a recorded live performance).
Anyone have any ideas? I hear the visuals were as moving as the music.

I thought the liners were pretty good, though. The liner notes were good. Except for the fact that the guy who wrote them seems to actually kind of like When Girls Get Together. It scares me that there are people in this universe like that. Ah jay, don't be a hater. I love When Girls Get Together. Its one of my favorite post-SMiLE songs.

tough one....
but after several days of thinking on this subject, I'd say the (high) BW/CW-vocals on the fade out of Till I Die. That is: I think it's Carl (with Brian). I've heard this outtake last year. Carl and Brian share the highparts in the fadeout and when you hear just the 2 of them singing the "aaahs" and "ooohs" (without the ("These things I'll be) until I die" lyrics) that really moves me everytime I hear it. Totally fits the mood of that song.... haunting....
Yeah, the harmony bit at the end of Break Away (I think its labeled in some Boots as Harmony Frie) is probably one of my favorites for the same reason.

Has anyone watched that episode of George Martin's documentary where he interviews Brian? There is a segment where Brian is playing Good Vibrations on the piano where his voice sounds wonderful... He was very relaxed in the Martin's presence and his voice sounded wonderful, way better than on BWPS or any live performance I have seen.

I asked someone who currently works with Brian regularly about the state of his falsetto and what I was told was that Brian can still sing up there, but it's something of a force of will for him. He also said that when Brian did decide to sing falsetto, it was Louder Than God.
That is an awesome quote!

Well we're all talking about Brian's voice like it was all about the falsetto when it wasn't. I don't think thats what he was trying, alone, to destroy. He was trying to destroy the boyish/effeminate quality which his voice had (which wasn't limited to merely his falsetto... But his tone and the timbre of his voice-falsetto and otherwise).

....To me Brian's vocals on Matchpoint or Come out Tonight sound very much like his late 60s-early 70s vocals. I don't think this sudden return to form was due to quitting cigarettes or drugs for a few months. Much more likely is that Brian wanted to (or was forced to) sing in his old (younger) voice.
You have got to be kidding me.

I did notice that of the big names of the 60's (Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Brian Wilson) John never slagged off Brian in the press. I'm not sure whether they ever met, but for sure John had respect for what he had accomplished and was respectful enough of him not to expend any of his vitrol on Brian.
