=A Day In The Life.......I LOVE IT....can't get enough listens.....beautiful sound painting of a tree...
Thats funny because I always thought it was a beautiful metaphor for Brian's degenerating condition.

I would like to see someone play Revolution #9 on guitar. LOL. In my opinion, the Beatles were better performers on stage and looked much cooler. They were also able to write better lyrics. The Beach Boys often had to look to the outside for their lyrics. However, musically, I think that Brian surpassed the Beatles. Dennis could also write songs as good as them, I think. Carl became a very good producer. Mike, Al and Bruce were up to Ringo's level in song writing ? I agree with that. especially the last bit!

I go back and forth all the time. My personal tastes are in favor of the Beach Boys... But I'll tell you why the Beatles will always be number 1... Try driving in a car and sing Surf's Up or Break Away... Now go try singing Yellow Submarine or All Together now.
The melodies are so much simpler and sing-songee compared to the Beachboys. That is why The Beatles will always remain #1 with the general population.

I think the song Southern California is prolly the most pretty song brian has written since say: Lay Down Burden, or Melt Away.
Yeah! In the same vein, definately. Gorgeous song. I think his half-destroyed voice actually adds a little bit to it, too... you can always count on Brian to drag out the tired, weary, whispy vocals when he does a song about reflection, or bittersweet memories. It just sends it through the roof, in my opinion. So half of the beauty of the song to me is the performance. Usually, his voice kind of gets in the way of some of the things he's doing, but evvvvvery once in a while, he just perfectly meshes up with something, and this is one of those songs. The moment of Southern California where it breaks back into the reprise of the "Glory halelujah" is huge selling point for me. It gives me chills everytime... Can we get this officially releases on CD now?

I doubt Brian's version of CF would have been considered for L.A. or MIU since he recorded it in 1974.
That didn't stop Sunflower outtakes turning up in the late 70s though - susie cincinatti, Good time, When girls get together... Thats true. The thought occured to me once I had posted it... But really the important thing is for Brian to release the 74 Version. COME ONE BRIAN!!!!

Mike was great right out of the box...Surfin' Safari, 409, Surfin' USA these vocals are iconic. All I Wanna Do is his range peak.
Brian...We'll Run Away, I Just Wasn't Made for These Times, Surf's Up.
Carl...Feel Flows, Trader.
Dennis...Lady, Barbara, Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again.
Al...Cottonfields, Lookin' At Tomorrow.
I'll put my money there. The tough one for me is Dennis... JohnStebbins has it right, but other times I really like Dennis voice ca. POB. There was something that was more soulful in his voice by that time.

I already know that TLOS will rank among my favorite BB/BW albums. I loved it the first time, but it even grew on me with repeated listenings. "Live let live" for example transformed from a song I didn't like at all to a melody I can't get out of my head. Simple-sounding but effective. "Midnight" is a classic, I don't know what it is that makes it so touching, but like "Still I Dream Of It" it has that special thing. If they would only add a complete version of "Can't Wait Too Long"...
If i am in line anywhere "I've got a notion we come from the ocean" is often in my brain.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Radiohead - In Rainbows. How Much Did You Pay?

Radiohead is a pretty good group, but not as great as hype would have one believe, IMHO. Maybe its just me, but I find a lot of their stuff to be really cold, distant, and robotic. Though I do listen to Radiohead quite regularly, I prefer The Flaming Lips or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-era Wilco to Radiohead.
I guess what I really have to say here is that Thom Yorke's music pales in comparison to Brian Wilson's (but is still a million times better than Mike Love's). I like SMiLE and Pet Sounds, and hell, even Summer Days a hundred times better than Ok Computer, but I would take a Radiohead album over Kokomo, Summer In Paradise, or Looking Back With Love any day of the week.
I totally agree with every word you said. Especially the bit about the Flaming Lips.

If pot is the gateway drug that leads to heroin, than I would say The Flaming Lips were the gateway that led me to the Beach Boys... There album which I think is the most Beach Boys is Clouds Taste Metallic.. Especially the track called "They Punctured My Yolk" I remember the FLips were doing a concert here and while they were setting up Wayne Coyne (the Band's leader) played an interview he did for VH1 where he interviewed Brian-who looked kinda scared of wayne.
