=A Day In The Life.......I LOVE IT....can't get enough listens.....beautiful sound painting of a tree...

Thats funny because I always thought it was a beautiful metaphor for Brian's degenerating condition.

I would like to see someone play Revolution #9 on guitar. LOL.

In my opinion, the Beatles were better performers on stage and looked much cooler. They were also able to write better lyrics. The Beach Boys often had to look to the outside for their lyrics. However, musically, I think that Brian surpassed the Beatles. Dennis could also write songs as good as them, I think. Carl became a very good producer. Mike, Al and Bruce were up to Ringo's level in song writing Smiley ?

I agree with that. especially the last bit!  LOL LOL LOL LOL

I go back and forth all the time. My personal tastes are in favor of the Beach Boys... But I'll tell you why the Beatles will always be number 1... Try driving in  a car and sing Surf's Up or Break Away... Now go try singing Yellow Submarine or All Together now.

The melodies are so much simpler and sing-songee compared to the Beachboys. That is why The Beatles will always remain #1 with the general population.

Is this from the same party where Brian was running around yelling about VDP being the biggest butthole in the world?  LOL

No doubt. When Stu was in the group, the were weaker for it. He didn't love the music. He loved John and that is the only reason why he joined the Beatles. He would have been a dead weight on the Beatles rise to success.

To put it truthfully and simply, The Beatles wanted Ringo BEFORE Ringo wanted the Beatles.

I think that you pose an interesting question which I would be interested in knowing the answer to as well.

In that same clip, Brian does pull off the vocal ok, but only by changing the register he sings in, which actually made for a more interesting performance anyway.
4709  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TLOS Speculation on: November 11, 2007, 07:57:36 PM
I think the song Southern California is prolly the most pretty song brian has written since say: Lay Down Burden, or Melt Away.

Yeah!  In the same vein, definately.  Gorgeous song.   I think his half-destroyed voice actually adds a little bit to it, too... you can always count on Brian to drag out the tired, weary, whispy vocals when he does a song about reflection, or bittersweet memories.  It just sends it through the roof, in my opinion.  So half of the beauty of the song to me is the performance.  Usually, his voice kind of gets in the way of some of the things he's doing, but evvvvvery once in a while, he just perfectly meshes up with something, and this is one of those songs.

The moment of Southern California where it breaks back into the reprise of the "Glory halelujah" is huge selling point for me. It gives me chills everytime... Can we get this officially releases on CD now? Smiley

I doubt Brian's version of CF would have been considered for L.A. or MIU since he recorded it in 1974.

That didn't stop Sunflower outtakes turning up in the late 70s though - susie cincinatti, Good time, When girls get together...

Thats true. The thought occured to me once I had posted it... But really the important thing is for Brian to release the 74 Version. COME ONE BRIAN!!!!  Tongue

It's never been booted, and there are maybe 5 people on the board who have heard it. Sadly, I'm not one of them.

Me neither and its truly one of the Holy Grails of Bootlegs for me. I just hope Brian releases it someday.  Cry Cry Cry
4713  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Vocal peaks? on: November 07, 2007, 10:40:57 AM
Mike was great right out of the box...Surfin' Safari, 409, Surfin' USA these vocals are iconic. All I Wanna Do is his range peak.

Brian...We'll Run Away, I Just Wasn't Made for These Times, Surf's Up.

Carl...Feel Flows, Trader.

Dennis...Lady, Barbara, Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again.

Al...Cottonfields, Lookin' At Tomorrow.

I'll put my money there.

The tough one for me is Dennis... JohnStebbins has it right, but other times I really like Dennis voice ca. POB. There was something that was more soulful in his voice by that time.

I like Jaime's Dad's version of it.  LOL

I know this is the same suggestion-type that I usually have. But at the begining of School Days, I would make note that Brian's vocal on top is very prominent... I know its a group vocal, but Brian's voice is definitely mixed out front.

Shocked

I already know that TLOS will rank among my favorite BB/BW albums. I loved it the first time, but it even grew on me with repeated listenings. "Live let live" for example transformed from a song I didn't like at all to a melody I can't get out of my head. Simple-sounding but effective. "Midnight" is a classic, I don't know what it is that makes it so touching, but like "Still I Dream Of It" it has that special thing. If they would only add a complete version of "Can't Wait Too Long"...

If i am in line anywhere "I've got a notion we come from the ocean" is often in my brain.
4717  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smile Reference Threads / Re: The Definitive Vocal Credits Thread... on: November 01, 2007, 12:15:13 AM
Per Good Timin', I really think Dennis should have had the lead on this one. His vocal really does lend an edge to the song which is really lacking in the official version.
4718  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Death Of The Beach Boys on: October 29, 2007, 07:31:48 PM
My take is a simple one:

When Brian dies, so do the Beach Boys.

Yeah, its always seemed kinda ambiguous to me.... Can't tell if its pro-drug or anti-drug. LOL

"Bells Of Christmas" lead vocal is Mike ? I don't think so, at least on the Ultimate Christmas track. Unless Alan can also sound like Mike imitating Alan.

Al is the Rich Little of the Beach Boys.  LOL
4721  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Radiohead - In Rainbows. How Much Did You Pay? on: October 19, 2007, 11:03:34 PM
Radiohead is a pretty good group, but not as great as hype would have one believe, IMHO. Maybe its just me, but I find a lot of their stuff to be really cold, distant, and robotic. Though I do listen to Radiohead quite regularly, I prefer The Flaming Lips or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-era Wilco to Radiohead.

I guess what I really have to say here is that Thom Yorke's music pales in comparison to Brian Wilson's (but is still a million times better than Mike Love's).
I like SMiLE and Pet Sounds, and hell, even Summer Days a hundred times better than Ok Computer, but I would take a Radiohead album over Kokomo, Summer In Paradise, or Looking Back With Love any day of the week.

I totally agree with every word you said. Especially the bit about the Flaming Lips.
4722  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: British Beach Boys-like band you should hear!! on: October 19, 2007, 11:02:08 PM
If pot is the gateway drug that leads to heroin, than I would say The Flaming Lips were the gateway that led me to the Beach Boys... There album which I think is the most Beach Boys is Clouds Taste Metallic.. Especially the track called "They Punctured My Yolk"

I remember the FLips were doing a concert here and while they were setting up Wayne Coyne (the Band's leader) played an interview he did for VH1 where he interviewed Brian-who looked kinda scared of wayne.  LOL

Paul: For No one

George: Blue Jay Way

Ringo:.........  LOL
4724  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Most Complex Brian Wilson Compositions on: October 19, 2007, 07:27:14 AM
You guys are funny. I don't see why a diminished chords is any more complex than any other chord.

The thing which is complex in Don't Talk is the voice leading (I'm not talking about vocals) in the strings as he moves from chord to chord.  Roll Eyes Grin
4725  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smile Reference Threads / Re: The Definitive Vocal Credits Thread... on: October 18, 2007, 12:53:01 PM
I believe it is Alan on The Bells of Christmas, Mike is only on Belles of Paris.

Just gave them both a listen and I gotta agree. Good catch.  Afro
