Interesting. I remember at the midnight madness sale when Anthology 2 came out they were giving out this little fanzine that talked about Now and Then. I have original Lennon version and the audio quality is terrible so I wondered how they were going to clean it up.
On the whole I think it sounds better than the original and it manages to do some pretty interesting things, especially in middle. Very nice. I would like to hear a better recording of it. I think the fidelity of the actual recording may have been lost in uploading it on youtube.

Not only does every message board have its a-holes but it also has its overly sensitive posters. I didn't see anything that one would find offensive in anyones post. If you don't have skin thick enough to stand correction, perhaps this isn't the place for you... (ahhhh... I fondly remembers multiple smack downs John's Definitive Vocal Thread).

I have thought of this quite a bit actually. I sort of think Brian would have been regarded the way I regard Buddy Holly. A genius in embryo that never got the chance to break out of his shell.
Production and songwriting wise, Buddy was on the verge of an artistic renaissance, I believe. His production techniques and songwriting were just starting to get interesting and his creativity was really starting to soar.
So I think Brian would have had that sort of reverence.

In the Sawyer interview with Landy and Brian, did anyone else pick up on the mystery person being interviewed in shadows as Melinda?
This has been a very interesting thread. I especially appreciated AGD's comments about different aspects of Brian's personality in different situations.

Where, may I ask, did you hear a post 76 Brian singing that... ? I'm intrigued.....I also know what you mean when you used the librettos analogy, and agree.... Still, more or less, it is a sound painting of a tree.... I didn't. I meant that in my ignorance I used to think the Riley vocals were Brians post blown-out vocals (which I later learned where a post 1975 developement).

=A Day In The Life.......I LOVE IT....can't get enough listens.....beautiful sound painting of a tree...
Thats funny because I always thought it was a beautiful metaphor for Brian's degenerating condition. That is how most people interpret it. But remember, it's a Rieley lyric. Brian's condition may be more in our heads than the writer's intent. (but maybe not. ask Rieley.) Oh I know... Mozart didn't write any of his librettos but don't you think he identified with the music enough to put a bit of himself into it? In any case I think Brian had to have seen the application and maybe thats why he was so drawn to it? The first time I heard the song I thought it was post 76 Brian singing and in light of how so many of his songs where self fullfilled prophecies (like I Just Wasn't Made For These Times) its kinda funny that at the time it was recorded he still possessed most of his boyish sweetness. But he gave the lyric to Jack to sing with his whispy/breathy voice. I love that song on so many levels.

I would like to see someone play Revolution #9 on guitar. LOL. In my opinion, the Beatles were better performers on stage and looked much cooler. They were also able to write better lyrics. The Beach Boys often had to look to the outside for their lyrics. However, musically, I think that Brian surpassed the Beatles. Dennis could also write songs as good as them, I think. Carl became a very good producer. Mike, Al and Bruce were up to Ringo's level in song writing ? I agree with that. especially the last bit!

I go back and forth all the time. My personal tastes are in favor of the Beach Boys... But I'll tell you why the Beatles will always be number 1... Try driving in a car and sing Surf's Up or Break Away... Now go try singing Yellow Submarine or All Together now.
The melodies are so much simpler and sing-songee compared to the Beachboys. That is why The Beatles will always remain #1 with the general population.
