Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: RIP Daniel Johnston

"The Devil and Daniel Johnston" is one of the best docs ever -- wonderful and heart poking even if you're not aware of him -- as was my case prior to watching it.
He was smiling through his own personal hell Dropped his last dime in a wishing well But he was hoping to close and then he fell Now he's Casper the Friendly Ghost
He was always polite to the people who'd tell him That he was nothing but a lazy bum, but Goodbye to them he had to go Now he's Casper the Friendly Ghost
Nobody treated him nice while he was alive You can't buy no respect like the librarian said, but Everybody respects the dead, they Love a friendly ghost
And now they say we'll never forget what he learned As we were mean to him but he never burned Just singing, "love lives forever!" Thank you, Casper the Friendly Ghost Thank you, Casper the Friendly Ghost
Shine on....
This song was my introduction to Daniel. It was on the soundtrack to a film called Surburbia which I only bought for the Flaming Lips and Sebadoh tracks. Oops. Not Surburbia.... KIDS... (I’ve actually never seen either movie, but I love both soundtracks.

I think her reluctance to let anyone in the house was more for tension (for the audience watching) more than anything. In the end it turned out to be true. The guy was sleeping and she didn't want him to fall asleep later when they were watching TV together.
Interesting theory but we'll respectfully agree to disagree. I didn't look at it like that. Basically, I agree with me about everything, *including* spoilers. I think spoilers are fun! It's fringe view but so what? I stand by it. Hate it if you wish, I don't give 2 flying figs. I literally couldn't care less about being soo serious about this spoiler thingy. ***major eyeroll*** I am individual, 1stly, I'll NEVER write "spoiler alert" as everybody. You just gotta deal with it, 'K?. I mean, why must I? It's free speech, I'll write reviews like I'm used to - detailed, describing scenes thru & thru etc. It's not end of the world, for pete's sake. Quit twitching & fretting about it. You'd think people will appreciate my reviews, don't people like long reviews anyway? It's better than pointless useless one-liners (bgas, anybody? Ha). I've very strong views about everything film/music-related. You gotta just accept it, hey. This is film review thread. I posted film review. Makes sense? Exactly. Thus, I made VALUABLE THREAD CONTRIBUTION. Don't thank me for this brilliant speech. "Respectfully" agree to disagree. "Respectfully".

I like opera, but I went to Rigoletto this afternoon and really didn't care for it.
I may be crucified for this, but I think much of Verdi's works verge on "extremely boring".
Well, how many have you heard/seen? He wrote over twenty, so to say that "much" of his works verge on boring means you've seen, at the very least, 14 Verdi operas, which would be, I suppose, just over half of them, depending on if we throw in the Requiem. If you've seen 14 Verdi operas, then you're pretty hardcore, because it's mostly a handful that get the most attention. With Verdi, I feel like there's something for everybody--Historical Dramas, Fairy Tales, Love Stories, Boston, Africa, Spain, Italy...you can travel around the world. I'm surprised Peter didn't like Rigoletto. The great arias from that are almost Brian Wilson pop. La Donna e Mobile is one of the most hummable melodies of all time, Caro Nome, Ella mi fu Rapita, Possente Amor, etc, etc--all great stuff. But that's taste for you, I guess. Of course, It helps when you have very good singers, which you can't always rely on. My view of Verdi has softened since I last posted. Maybe it's because I am getting older. I dunno. (for the record, at the time I posted, I had personally attended Otello, Falstaff, MacBeth, Luisa Miller, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, and Rigoletto. I have made a point of listening to his earlier opera's lately though. Just finished listening to Nabucco last weekend whilst Spring cleaning)

3) Smiley Smile: Okay, I'm only being half serious with this one, but "Good Vibrations" takes me out of this album! Production-wise, it's jarring. Simple as that. I've said before that GV is probably my most skipped BB song, and that's true. It's also one of my favorite BB songs. So, do I believe that Smiley Smile is worse off because of it? No.
Yes! I wonder if substituting the Lai'd In Hawaii version of Good Vibrations would temper that. I've never tried it though.

SWD doesn't claim to be a historian. He is not interested in conveying that aspect of his work with the Beach Boys. He can only recall events as he remembers them. If you disagree with a point of his, I doubt he cares that much. But it is those among us who want to browbeat him with their point and want him to acknowledge their absolute correctness that has put this thread and his website in it's current condition. I have my opinion about SOS. But in the light of everything that SWD has brought to this forum, I could not careless if he said Dolly Parton sang it. Just move on and let the man do his thang.
