Wow- I haven't visited Smiley Smile in a few days and came back to look at my post.
Jeez people? Isn't this what this website is for? Discussing and learning about the Beach Boys? It obviously has been mentioned in BBs books, so it's not an unreasonable question.

I saw M+B at Ravinia in Chicago in 2014. My friend and I had lawn seats, so we could hardly see the stage, but we were having a great time nonetheless. All of a sudden, these three girls come up to us, and offer us their tickets, claiming they only came to see the temptations (who had played before the BBs). How could we resist?
It turns out the seats were incredible! We were three rows back from the stage, and from now on I've claimed---
We were so close we could see Mike and Bruce's wrinkles!
It was a great night, and the band sounded fantastic. Highlights were Bruce singing Disney Girls, Jeff on Why Do Fools Fall In Love, and BELIEVE IT OR NOT- BRUCE PLAYED BASS ON GOD ONLY KNOWS. I couldn't believe my eyes.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Drums (Or lack thereof) on Love You

There's a strange appeal to the arrangements on Love You. There's something about a "man-child" writing ditties on his synthesizers and whatever other instruments around, that is intriguing. I find the fat Moog bass particularly cool. Another aspect of the arrangements that catch my attention is how BW used the drums. Similar to Pet Sounds and SMiLE, the drums aren't used necessarily to keep tempo, but to add color. On "Roller Skating Child" there aren't really drums in the verses, except for those snare hits in-between lines. And then in the chorus, we go into a steady rock beat. I love the sound of the snare drum on Roller Skating Child and Let Us Go On This Way. Was BW using a drum machine or actually playing the drums? (Well snare drum is the only prominent percussion on the album... Hi hats and kick drum make several guest appearances on the album... )

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Lady Lynda: A Masterpiece

Okay- I may get a lot of criticism for saying this, but I think Lady Lynda is one of the best Beach Boys songs of all time. It has such a beautiful melody and arrangement. Alan's vocals are great, and the fact that Dennis contributed to the arrangement is really neat! The song just creates such a cool vibe, that like Pet Sounds, combines classical and rock music. I surely can't be the only one that loves this song. Who else does?

When I listen to Sunflower and Surfs Up via headphones, the imaging, vocal positioning, and separation...is more INSIDE my head...but still very real and "3 D"/dimensional. On another subject, "All This Is That" from Carl and The Passions sounds similar in mixing and engineering to the songs on Sunflower and Surfs Up. A great vocal song that sounds inspired and influenced by Mr. Stephen W. Desper. "Wonderful" from Smiley Smile seems to employ a similar approach to the vocals. I love recordings where the vocals are "up front"...and "directly connected" to the listener...with little space between the vocals and the listener. Not highly compressed at all, it's not a compression issue...but recorded so that there's a "direct sound experience" and a "lack of a gap" between the vocals and the listener. Close and Up Front. With headphones, that's a space either right in front of my eyes or right behind. Close and Intimate and not hidden in the background. Vocals not mixed in with other sounds, at least not up front, sound that's not full of sound gimmicks...and not cluttered with "busyness". The vocals are "exposed" and the vocalist is "vulnerable"...not hiding who he is and what he's feeling. ESPECIALLY when I know the vocalists I've chosen to listen to and be "actively engaged and interactive" with...vs. being caught off guard by some vocals I don't want to get too close to. I'm not sure if this is allowed, but since this website is devoted to genius, the following is a meeting between George Martin and Brian Wilson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnVyCuc9_P8 It was just announced today, 9-29-15, that Brian Wilson and Al Jardine are coming to North Florida in early December. Maybe Mr. Stephen W. Desper could be utilized to record and mix the concert, arranging and placing the microphones in his expert manner...for a special Christmas offering. I'd buy it, especially if it was on cassette. Or via sale of the multi-tracks, to create original mixes as the listener so chooses. That is a brilliant idea.
