Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Will there ever be a Jan and Dean box set?

If Sunshine Tomorrow has gotten to the top of Amazon, anything is possible. I just think that even though there is little demand for J&D music, they did so much for music, and Jan worked so hard--- they deserve a high quality box set. Also, I think J&D made plenty of great albums. Drag City, Ride The Wild Surf, Little Old Lady (From Pasadena), Save For A Rainy Day, and Carnival of Sound are all really amazing albums in my opinion.

If a Beach Boys song has that thumb bass sound, that's a pretty good indicator that Brian is playing. I know Al, Carl, Carol Kaye, Ray Pohlman, Ed Carter, etc.... all played with a pick.

THANK YOU!
I brought this up on the J&D forum, and I think they really deserve their own boxset... My vision for it would be....
Section 1: Complete discography. (Doo Wop years, Surf/Hit years, Post-Accident years, and Phase II years) Section 2 : Alternate versions, Outtakes, Live...
I just can't decide if I would like Jan's original mono mixes or maybe 2017 stereo remixes... Or maybe both???
Anyway, I just really think J&D deserve a comprehensive box set, with all of their material, in good quality.

Bruce is credited as singing, playing organ, and playing bass on Smiley Smile.
It's also worth noting that Carl is credited with playing guitar, bass, and percussion,
Al is credited with playing guitar and bass.
Denny is credited with playing drums (I don't hear any really... And on the songs with drums it's Hal Blaine probably) and organ
Brian is credited with playing with playing bass, piano, and organ.
Everyone sings obviously.
I am 99% sure I can hear Bruce on a lot of SS, WH, and Friends, even though some people doubt his contribution to those records.

I would assume that those three albums consist of Bruce (especially), Brian, Carl, and Al all playing bass, augmented by session musicians, especially on Friends. Wild Honey has Ron Brown playing bass. Some of the songs on SS and WH have that thumb picked bass sound, which indicates to me that Brian is playing. Friends has some cool basslines, which I know Lyle Ritz may have played, but I would not be surprised if Bruce, Al, or Carl played them. For Friends, I assume BW had more of a role in arranging/producing, rather than playing, where as he may have been more part of the band with SS and WH.

1. All I Wanna Do 2. Good Vibrations 3. Be Here In The Morning 4. The Night Was So Young 5. Good Timin'
My favorites are always changing! The BBs just have so many great songs!

Hey Mark, I payed $80 for the book, which I was HAPPY to do!! I read the book everyday! I have learned so much from it. It is both fun and informational. After you do Jan's biography, what do you think about releasing Jan's charts, if you had permission? There are so many J&D songs I'd love to play, but most of the chords and such on the internet are inaccurate.

I wish Save For A Rainy Day and Carnival Of Sound would/could have been released in their day. I think they would've been extremely successful with proper promotion. I don't think they are as good as Pet Sounds (nothing really is), but I think Carnival Of Sound is just as good as Sgt. Pepper. There's something about Jan's arrangements, that just never fail to blow me away. Songs "Girl, You're Blowing My Mind", "Fan Tan", and "I Know My Mind" could have been very successful I think. Save For A Rainy Day is less commercial in my mind, but I think it would have kept the J&D name alive, and proved Dean as an artist, so maybe he could have more of a say in the records, which I think he had certainly earned by 1966.

YES! I try to have J&D discussions all the time on here, but people argue over who was better JB or BW. The J&D forum is kind of dead, and there isn't much going on there... Anyway, I love Carnival Of Sound and Save For A Rainy Day. I think they prove that J&D could have been very successful in the psychedelic era. Save For A Rainy Day is cool because I think it was finally Dean proving himself as a capable artist. He was now at the helm of J&D music, and he recorded some great songs. "Like A Summer Rain" is one of my alltime favorite songs. Great vocals, lyrics, melody, production, everything.
Save For A Rainy Day is very lo-fi production, like the BBs Wild Honey album, but Carnival of Sound is definetly a Wall Of Sound type record.
