81  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Drums (Or lack thereof) on Love You on: October 22, 2015, 10:30:08 AM
There's a strange appeal to the arrangements on Love You. There's something about a "man-child" writing ditties on his synthesizers and whatever other instruments around, that is intriguing. I find the fat Moog bass particularly cool. Another aspect of the arrangements that catch my attention is how BW used the drums. Similar to Pet Sounds and SMiLE, the drums aren't used necessarily to keep tempo, but to add color. On "Roller Skating Child" there aren't really drums in the verses, except for those snare hits in-between lines. And then in the chorus, we go into a steady rock beat.

I love the sound of the snare drum on Roller Skating Child and Let Us Go On This Way. Was BW using a drum machine or actually playing the drums? (Well snare drum is the only prominent percussion on the album... Hi hats and kick drum make several guest appearances on the album...  Drumroll)

Agree. The arrangement on Love You is beautiful. Especially when considering Brian recording so much of it.

It's such a unique album...and if it were a Brian solo album I think it would be viewed differently. The step he took there reminds me of how Kanye West did a similar thing much later and made '808s and Heartbreak' in 2008, abandoning his rapping and previous production style to create a unique singular project

2 questions:

1. What's the deal with this third love and mercy verse at 2:08? Has anyone heard this anywhere else before?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpYJ7FIcQNg

2. Anyone know the history of the section of Rio Grande that starts around 4:00 in the album version? It's so beautiful...was it written for the Rio enterprise originally or come from somewhere else? It's the after rain section "The river's deep and the river's so wide....she's waiting for me on the other side"

Any help would be appreciated Smiley

Wow! These reviews are really awesome! I'm going to see Brian in June and I'm so excited! It will be my first beach boys live experience so that is really great to hear!
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Did Brian ever listen to/talk about Freddie Mercury and queen? on: May 12, 2015, 05:41:54 AM
just curious...couldn't find anything googling. Seems like he would have enjoyed songs like bohemian rhapsody, killer queen, bicycle race...

Does anyone know if he has commented on this before?
86  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: American Songwriter: Writer of the week, Brian on: April 28, 2015, 02:06:29 PM
My problem with it being GOK----trying to think straight here----is that since Tony Asher is credited with writing the lyrics, why would these have taken Brian so long? I can imagine him getting forgetful about some things from so long ago but this just seems odd...

The chords are very complex. Brian has said on multiple occasions it is the most complex song he has written in terms of chord progression.

Don't Worry - instrumental intro... for some reason I get such an epic feeling from this...like Brian is flying through space? And so am I? idk

Other more popular ones-

- The beautiful day- "...find a way, if we could, only stay" - when the harmonies hit

- Intro to Runaway Dancer, before drums come in

-"Whatever happened to yesterday morning...my dream came true" - Al and Brian singing together so beautiful

-Our Special Love intro (sounds like Bach!) and chorus when backing vocals hit "Our special.....loooooooove, love"

-Somewhere quiet - second chorus when strings come in reminds me of time to get alone

-Sail Away - Al singing 'follow the sun to the white sand beaches'...just reminds me of brian and al sailing away on one last adventure...kind of like the end of lord of the rings haha

-One Kind of Live - all the references to hit past- "It is a revelation, I feel alive again" "I wasted so much time, running circles in my mind", "I nearly failed the test of time, But now that you are mine, Girl I'm here to stay.

-The Last Song- "There's never enough time for the ones that you love"

Well said guitarfool, that looks perfect.  You're absolutely right about the double tracking too - it makes relatively simple 3/4 part harmony just sound huge.

In a promo for NPP Zoey Deschanel quotes Brian as saying triple track "sounds like angels singing"

I think I have the other decades covered, but I feel like I must be missing some great material from the 90s. It's a very confusing era.

What's the deal with Sweet Insanity? Can I buy it? Or outtakes from it? Any tracks you recommend? I really like Love You and a few tracks from BW88 so I'm sure I'm missing something in those sessions...

And what about the "left over" sessions from that album? Like this one- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iSvmqhF-Hw

I've heard IJWMFTT and like it, though I prefer big production from Brian. Like Love and Mercy and There's So Many.

Is there anything good from Imagination?

If it's helpful here's my list of favorite BW/BB tracks. Let me know if you think I'm missing anything!! Smiley
