I'd love to see the backing tracks released in one form or another. I'll Bet He's Nice in particular! It sounds so Switched-On Bach even with the boys singing.

Agreed! I think it's amazing and often-overlooked how innovative Brian's use of moog synthesizers was in 77.

Beautiful song. One of my favorites.

Although I've heard Brian's involvement in that song was somewhat limited, this article seems to refute that. Anyone know the extent of Brian's involvement in this one?

http://www.laweekly.com/music/brian-wilsons-secret-bedroom-tapes-a-track-by-track-description-4479099

""All I Wanna Do" (1968 version) - Wilson also cut an early version of the gorgeous Sunflower ballad, "All I Wanna Do," which in '68 featured a sitar, but no lyrics."

"The 1970 version of "All I Wanna Do," written by Wilson and demo'd in '68, was recorded for the Sunflower album with Wilson completely absent from the final production. Note: A few additional tracks from this era have been recently discovered, but not heard by this author."

and when he's done anything really good since, I've been suspicious about his real level of involvement.

Couldn't that be said for BW88 gems and sweet insanity too? I get that suspicion...but a song like 'Summer's Gone' is so quintessentially brian (and so fantastic) I think it merits consideration as an all-time great beach boys song.

Does anyone know if below is true? Trying to find Love You instrumentals/backing tracks.

"There are a handful of Brian's original "finished" Love You tracks floating around as well, though what I've heard are just like his early mixes for the previous 15 Big Ones - not that different... well, apart from Honking Down The Highway featuring an alternate lead vocal from Billy Hinsche and Ding Dang being slightly longer."

The longer Ding Dang and alternate Honkin' are.true, you can find them on YouTube, not sure about the backing tracks.

Cool thanks! I found them and liked the longer ding dang.

Still dying to hear the album instrumentals though

Definitely seemed like Brian enjoyed using the synths at least in the Love You era (dying to hear those backing tracks)

no one has mentioned This Beautiful Day yet? I know it's short but it's absolutely breathtaking!

I love how you can hear the exhales on the harmonies...makes them 'breathe' and really come alive.

I like it, man. Sort of like an Olivia Tremor Control meets ELO. I particularly like your singing voice. With the effects, reminds me of Lynne on "Mr. Blue Sky" or "Mr. Radio". And don't take me the wrong way, I'm always naturally compelled to make comparisons between artists.

I know you mentioned the production, so if you were to want any critique on it, I might suggest raising the other elements to match the level of the synth sound so that it's not so heavy in the foreground. At times it overshadows the vocals a bit.

Thanks for the kind words. It means a lot. I am far more confident in my songwriting than singing so it is really nice to hear you liked the vocals  Smiley

I am inspired by both ELO and OTC! I never thought about the sound that way but I think you're right. My biggest influences when writing it was Love You, Yeezus, and Sgt. Pepper's.

Thanks again for the feedback!! The songs mean a lot to me, so even if the final product isn't perfect a lot of heart went into the songwriting.  Cool Guy

The backing vocals for "Don't Talk" are the most spine tingling beach boy moment for me. It's like hearing God in a multitude of Brian's voices

If you need a more beach boysy intro to the album check out this one...has some harmonies in a tag at the end:

http://jonahlustig.bandcamp.com/track/no-instructions

anyway would love feedback. i know it's not a 'genre' album (dont think it has much of a precedent in terms of sound) but personally i think that makes it more interesting...but whatever if people think it's "too weird" i just tell them folks said the same about smile...im allowed to be delusional  LOL Smokin Evil

*update read a review of the album here!!!

-----------------------

Hey guys, I recently finished up recording an album.

It's a very psychedelic retro-modern pop album....heavily influenced by Brian Wilson especially pet sounds, love you, and BW88. The theme is a search for spirituality in the digital age.

I hope you enjoy it, I know production-wise it can be a little rough around the edges but the songwriting all came from the heart.

You can listen/download here:

good vibrations,

My first released track of the new year is an experiment in something, but I don't quite know what. To be musically snobish, I'll call it a trip-pop/EPM (electronic prance music) mash-up. If you have a better description let me know! Instrumental version up as well for all you daytrippers out there.

I like this, especially the tag. The song is a bold vision and I like that you didn't compromise on that when you produced/ recorded it

New song is a suite about the town I've lived in a few years now...Pasadena, CA. Has pretty much 2 sections, the second beginning around 2:28.

As always would love to hear your thoughts. Best wishes to all.

Regarding its U.S. chart position, Breakaway. Shoulda been a massive hit.

Thank you for saying Breakaway! I haven't listened to that song in a few years and completely forgot about it....it is one of my favorites!

What do you think? Including beach boys work.  There are a ton of potential answers since much of his later work is ignored. I was considering Being With The One You Love or Let's Put Our Hearts Together but have to go with:

Rio Grande

Too good, too under-appreciated.
