A very emotional recording, it brought a tear to my eye.  Well done David and Adam!

This is awesome stuff, Will!  I just finished setting up my music room after moving and this is one of the first things I played once I tweaked the sound.  Needless to say, I got totally lost in the grooves.  This will be perfect 2am in the morning music as well!  Cool Guy  I've gone through quite the hip-hop phase in the last few years, so this is hitting the spot.  I'll be PM'ing you for a copy; thanks for sharing!

"Bet you wish it really didn't matter
All along you never really had her
She's your everything, makes you wanna sing
Ooo-Ooo-ooo-ooo"

Song was cheesy as fudge, but this part at the end totally gave me goosebumps.  A beautiful melody, and damned if those aren't simple and direct BW lyrics!  Too bad Frank's take isn't getting released, I could totally hear how parts of this song were geared in his direction, although Peter did a serviceable, if not memorable job.  Overall, a thumbs up to Brian and all involved and I hope the melodies are as lilting as this one on the new album!

Anyway, back on topic...surprised Brian hasn't worked with ?uestlove, considering he's a huge fan of Brian.

?uestlove collaborator D'Angelo shares a lot of "reclusive genius" traits with Brian Wilson.  The drumming on his album "Voodoo" is so in the pocket that it's part of the fabric.  Yeah, would love to see ?uestlove do some session work with Brian.  Can you imagine the groovy version of "Shortenin' Bread" they could come up with?  Afro

7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's love for 'My Obsession' and its influence on Fire etc. on: July 04, 2014, 03:43:49 PM
I'm convinced that "My Obsession" began Brian's own life-long obsession with the "Shortenin' Bread" riff.  Modify the bass/organ line on the Stones song and there you have it? Whenever Brian lists his favorite songs I find he picks ones that sound most like songs he would write himself.  Another example is "Let it Be" by the Beatles, very Brian-esque on it's feel, especially the piano.

Does anyone know when the first appearance of the "Shortenin' Bread" riff or a variation of appeared on a BB/BW recording? Sorry if this has been covered before.

Brian: Mike, you're good with words...can you take a look at this?

Mike: Anything for my cousin Brian!  Lemme see that there.

*pauses*

Mike: Yeeeeeaaaaa, these lyrics are just way too depressing Bri.  Let's inject some positivity!  How about "I just wasn't made for these FRIES"?  Like, we're already at the hamburger stand, she still has the T-Bird's keys, but the fries are cold...so she splits, right?  So like...*hums a melody*...yeah, yeah so she cruises down to the beach...it's midnight right, so the moon is creating a really beautiful phosphorescent glow on the waves...

Brian: *laughs* Ah Mike, the song is already done.  Tony and I wrote it in five minutes!  FIVE MINUTES!  Can you believe it?  I just need you to proof-read it, you know?

Mike: Oh, uh...yeah, sure...anything for you Brian. Hmmm...a-ha, you wrote "were" in the second line when I think you meant "where".

Brian: Wow Mike, I didn't even notice that!  Second line in and there's a huge mistake! Oh man! *laughs*  Cool, thanks.

Mike: So...I like, get a co-writing credit for that, right?

Brian: *laughs loudly* Hahaha, yeah sure!  Yeah, a co-write.

Mike: I'll just write my name right at the top here then...

Brian: WHOA, no no no.  You're serious?  You want a co-writing credit for that?

Mike: Well, why not?

*awkward silence*

Brian: I'd like the pad of paper back now, Mike.  I'm really busy right now.

Mike: Can I keep the pen?

Brian: No, that's my only pen.

Brian was feelin' it on that clip, dig the new counter melody part he adds during the tag!  Thanks for sharing, it's a great performance.

Mike:  Ok, I need everyone's attention.  For reals.
I wanna be serious for a moment, and to talk to everyone about something very, very important...

** crowd quiets down **

Mike:  What the f-ck am I wearin' right now?  Seriously.  Am I three-musketeer or what?
Do you know? Cuz I don't.  This sh-t is f-cked up right here, that's all I know.

That's right.  I don't know what creature of unknown origin, died to make this jacket.
Do you?  I don't.  'Tell you what -- it ain't from this galaxy.  Fck it is!

Damn.  This sh-t is f-cked up!  F-cked up, BIG TIME!

And no one, mind you, NO ONE! stopped me and told me how f-cked up all this sh-t was either.
No one.  No one.  No one.  There is no love for Mike Love.

No love...

Ok.  Ok.  Anyway.  For reals now, everybody.  Seriously.  What I wanna say is -- most importantly...
You, in the first row... I want my sword back.  Yeah, I dropped it during I Get Around, can you -- can you just pick it up, there...

I peed.

Live at the Roxy.  All of it.  I listened to it for the first time yesterday then had to hear it right through twice more.  Great to hear Brian so relaxed and happy, and there's something about his war-torn vocalising that works so well in the music despite its less-than-perfect quality.  To make up for the loss of the unearthly purity of his early voice, the songs have a sense of humanity and humility that works for me.

Yes, that's a truly excellent live album.  I wish the C50 double disc sounded as good as Roxy!

The BB moment that's kicking my ass right now:

Brian's "Love you baby" counter-melody at the end of the MiC version of "Our Sweet Love".

Has anyone else heard "Psychedelic Essentials"?  I wanted to buy the Flame album from iTunes and noticed the two different versions on there.  I assume that the 2004 "release" with the proper track order and cover is identical to the needledrop that's been floating around for ages.  If the "Psychedelic Essentials" is a better mastering I'd like to purchase it.  Any comments?

Only on the Smiley Smile Message Board could a thread about a new compilation of vintage Beach Boys and BB related recordings disintegrate into archeological dig for a bag of potato chips!  LOL

But seriously, the "Party!" chips discussion is beyond fascinating; these are the threads I come here for!  Also excited for "The Big Beat 1963"; I've finally broken my prejudice about  buying albums on iTunes, so this is a no-brainer purchase for me.  Interested in the Beatles and Dylan ones too.

Brian's drum machine bathed count-in to "Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love".  Brian and Mike sound really good here, similar to "It's Just a Matter of Time".
Love Brian's lazy "duh-duh-duwuh-do"s!

The saxophone on It's OK. You can hear it so clearly on the MIC mix, and it indeed kicks ass.

Ha, I just came here to post THIS!  Agreed, the prominent sax on the tag is just honey.

Mike and Dean, no longer just for alcohol drenched night terrors.  Think about how creepy they must have looked before they came out of the bottle!  This is Bobble-Head Love.

That was an excellent, unusually casual interview with Mike.  He starts off really showman like, but then things get really cool when he talks about his rings.  Mike was a gentleman and really clicked with the interviewer.  Mike has a great sense of humor and that's really showcased here.  You can really get a sense of how Brian gets along with Mike in these moments, the humor bringing them together.  I really enjoyed that, thanks for posting.

They'd just had a worldwide #1 hit, this was the time to come back with a strong effort - if BW88 had been released with the BB's vocals on it, it would've sold millions. Can you imagine a version of "Melt Away" with Carl singing lead? Al singing "Walkin' the Line"?

Oh man, THIS.

Anyone pick this up?  The record store I work at got this in; we carry a lot of LPs from this label.  Their Etta James reissue sells all the time.  Thinking of picking this up, especially for the bonus tracks.  Can anyone comment on the sound quality and pressing of the actual vinyl?

I can't speak on this particular release, but I have a handful of Doxy things and they all sound really good.

Thanks for the feedback.  I might bite the bullet next paycheck...I'll post pics and sound review.

I want Brian to grow a beard again badly for some reason

I want him to wear a Beatle haircut again

Someone photoshopped 1966 Brian's hair onto 2012 Brian's face last year. It was strange. Can anyone dig that pic up?

BUMP!  I thought I had saved that photo somewhere, but I can't find it now.  It was quite hilarious!

I got my copy of the Friday Music reissue of "Brian Wilson".  The sleeve is wonderfully reproduced, with a very attractive gatefold for the first time.  The vinyl itself sounds good; the mastering is closer in tone to the 2000 cd. The tinniest detail of the production is at the forefront, so you can really focus on every last synth trill or gurgle. Brian's individual harmonies really benifit from the added resolution. However, this is at the expense of the original's dynamics.  I did a shootout with my original Sire vinyl and there was more warmth and space to the sound on the Sire.  If you have a hard time finding an original LP, get a copy of the Friday Music reissue. For folks that already own an original, buy it as a collector's item or just hang on to your previous pressing.
