Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce Beach Boys 2017 Tour

I've heard a fan report that Jeff mentioned he had offers from all three "camps" to join circa 1998/99.
I'm a bit skeptical of how firm an offer he received from either Al or Mike.
As Jeff even alluded to in his 2014 interview, even in 2014 he had some issues he had to talk out with Mike before rejoining. Read his mid-90s interview about his 1990 departure to learn more about the issues that may have been at play. Both Mike and Carl are specifically mentioned by Jeff in the interview was having issues with Jeff.
But I'm a bit skeptical that only eight years later, Mike would have been so quickly jumping back into asking Jeff back. On the other hand, he did lose his falsetto guy when Matt Jardine left in 1998 (Matt continued to do some gigs with Mike even after Al's departure), so there was a slot in the band he needed to fill.
Meanwhile, by the time Al was starting his "Family & Friends" band up in late 1998, he of course was going to have Matt in the band doing a lot of falsettos (and leads). So that would have filled the main role Jeff could have. Obviously, Jeff could have still joined Al's band and played guitar and sang higher mid-range parts, etc.
Jeff has seemed to have a pattern of arguably over-inflating his stories/resume on occasion (I still remember his website claiming he was going to get on stage with Paul McCartney at McCartney's show and play with him; that obviously never happened because I was at both Bay Area shows where they claimed it was happening/had happened). His 8 and 1/2 year tenure with the band has often ballooned to 10 or 12 or more years; sometimes they just count from 1981 and say he's been there for like 35 years. Nothing major, but I could see some random talk around 1998 about playing with these guys could morph into all three guys actually offering him spots.
This pretty much sums up exactly what I was thinking. I highly doubt that Jeff would have turned down an invitation to rejoin Mike's band in 1998. Even in 1999 when Brian's first real tour was forming, there were question as to if Brian was really going to do the tour. Brian has been touring very consistently since 1999, but in 1998, the idea of Brian Wilson doing a full touring still seemed somewhat doubtful. And when Brian did his live Imagination show that was filmed in 1998, asn't it Christopher Cross who did the high vocal parts? It seems to make more sense that Jeff was offered the role in Brian's band quite awhile after Mike had already hired Adrian Baker.

Not to add any confusion to the thread, but here is the version of “Do It Again” that was released last year on the CD set you could only get through PBS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rgCY0LznVwSeems to have many elements in common with the version released today, but… a lot better, in my opinion. The fact that it had Brian Wilson, Alan Jardine, and David Marks makes it a million times better than having John Stamos and Mark Somebody.

Here are the two items I have signed by Carl (both purchased): I owned this 25 years program, purchased for $60 ended up selling it for around $150 (didn't like the personalization) I personally think you are better off trying to find a completed item with Carl already on it. Here is my reasoning: 1. Completed items with Carl can be had at a reasonable price ($200-$500 depending on the item and whether Brian is also on it--Dennis included inflates the price considerably). 2. Meet & Greets are pricey - Brian, Al and Blondie ($500 includes ticket to concert), Mike and Bruce ($250 does not include ticket to concert) - if you believe Brian's website, they are giving you his signed book and no other memorabilia will be signed. I have not heard of too many successes of getting Brian to sign outside the venue in the last couple of years. If they're now giving out presigned books at the Brian Wilson meet and greets, I wonder if these will be auto pen signed books. At the Atlantic City meet in greet in 2013 they gave out presigned photos, and the Brian Wilson signatures were "ghost signed". After enough of us complained, they finally mailed us authentic signed photos. If Brian really doesn't want to do the signings, then the management should not be promising them just get people to buy an expensive meet and greet package.

I would never sell any of the items that I have in my collection, but my experience was that Carl Wilson was pretty good signer. Carl was actually the first of The Beach Boys that I ever got an autograph from. But, authentic autographed items with his signature turn up from time to time on a certain auction web site. If nothing else, you can probably find one there at a reasonable price.

How about the Black Friday signed Mike Love books? I got one but didn't think to compare it to the other signatures in the other books. Are those ones legit?
The Mike Love books purchased via Premiere Collectibles and Barnes & Noble appear to be legit. It's just my opinion, but I really don't think there are too many fake Mike Love autographs floating around. Mike has always been good about signing autographs. I once personally watched him sign about a dozen albums for one guy.
