101  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce Tour 2014 on: June 17, 2014, 09:13:57 PM
Just my opinion, obviously, but the anti-Love stuff on the internet has not snowballed in the last decade. It has actually decreased in terms of the proportion of negative-to-neutral-to-positive. It was pretty uniformly negative stuff back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, probably in part because the wounds of the remnants of the band splitting were still fresh, and also because even many Mike Love superfans would agree that the live show he had put together in 1998-1999 was relatively sub-par, especially in comparison to a decade later.

By the mid-late 2000’s, it seemed to die down to some degree, probably due to a mixture of time passing, Mike’s live show improving, fans become rather apathetic to the cause of demanding Mike stop using the BB name, Brian’s solo career being an actual going concern, and so on. Certainly, the decades-old negative impression has never gone away, and we’ve spent thread after thread trying to dissect how much of all the old negative crap (“don’t f*** with the formula, “Smile”, etc.) concerning Mike is fair or not.

I’ve rambled about this numerous times, but Mike gained a HUGE amount of goodwill and positive commentary for doing the reunion in 2012, from some of the most jaded, crusty, cynical Beach Boys fans ever (and the press as well). Unfortunately, the aftermath of the reunion pulled the rug out from under some of those cranky fans so severely, it led to a disproportionately huge negative backlash.

Agreed.

I remember ages ago there was a Mike Love Fan Club page where the level of hate spilled over into Brianistas handing out death threats to other posters on occasion, for example.

(I didn`t know that Ambha Love had to go to school with a bodyguard after receiving a death threat several years ago until I saw it while searching for something else on this site though).

This is very sad, any way you look at it.

Where there any surprises in the setlist?
103  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Recent Pro-shot Mike & Bruce(and Foskett) videos on: June 03, 2014, 12:19:07 PM
Does anyone know if Randell has any leads anymore? It would be a shame to not use him for any leads at all. To my ears, Randell's lead on Good Vibrations was much better than Christian's lead.

I saw the first show with Jeff replacing Christian on May 32, 2014.  The only lead Randell had was "Then I kissed Her".  Jeff also took the lead on "Darlin".  I'm not sure if this was a mistake or not.  They started the song and nobody took the lead.  Jeff picked it up after a few seconds and finished the song.  Several of the guys were laughing.  I'm not quite sure what happened.  Either Jeff of John missed their spot at the begining of the song.  But, Jeff actually sounded good on "Darlin".

Thought these were too nice to just put in the Jeff replaces Christian Love thread, some pro-shot footage from the recent Abbey Road On The River.

Here's "Don't Worry Baby": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2Z1naIH7S4&feature=youtu.be

And here's "Pisces Brothers" with a little interview clip at the beginning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0aN1-bxCow

The band sounds good!

Where exactly did these videos originate?  Are there any more?
105  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is this Brian signature Legit? You Make the Call! on: May 14, 2014, 04:08:33 PM
Sometimes the shakyness of Brian's signature varies based on different factors.  I've gotten smooth ones from him, and I've gotten ones that look like he's in the middle of a siezure.
106  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is this Brian signature Legit? You Make the Call! on: May 14, 2014, 11:33:31 AM
I have three signatures from the last 10 years that Brian signed in front of me which do have the "S" in Wilson.  His signature can certainly vary quite a bit.   When Jeff forges Brian's signature, it seems like he always gets the "B" wrong.

Just out of curiosity, how much were they asking for this?
109  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pictures from \ on: May 07, 2014, 11:33:40 AM
The omission of David Marks is starting to remind me of the horrific "Summer Dreams" so called biopic.  I know the film is mainly about Brian, but leaving David out all together is still terrible.
110  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pictures from \ on: May 06, 2014, 12:08:49 PM
It looks like that scene is attempting to replicate the photoshoot for the Surfin' Safari album cover, yet the woodie there looks nothing like the yellow truck seen on the cover.  I normally wouldn't care about something like this, but it does kind of bother me that they'd play fast and loose with the details of such an iconic image (possibly to suit what may be considered a more audience-friendly, stereotypical interpretation of that period).

Well, they don't even have the right guys in that scene from what I understand, as it is Al and not David who is in that scene. So not getting the band members right makes not getting the woodie right less of an issue.

This type of mistake is unacceptable.  Do they not even try to make things acurate?

This is kind of a side note, but several years ago, I remember a pair of Murry's eye glasses being offered for sale on Ebay.  I think they had an opening bid of around a $100 and did sell.

Personaly, I can't stand this version.  The original "God Only Know" is one of the most beautiful things ever recorded.  This cover is not.

Do you happen to know what year the picks might be from?  I would assume mabey it was during the 1980's?
114  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / "Justyn Wilson" Guitar Pick on: March 25, 2014, 05:48:48 PM
I was speaking with somebody who claims to have a Beach Boys guitar pick that has "Justyn Wilson" printed on the reverse side.  Does anyone know if Carl ever had any picks like these made up?  I'm wondering if this is an authentic pick.
115  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike receives Ella Award 2014 on: March 02, 2014, 05:50:01 PM
it was actually quite a touching speech from Dr Love...

maybe he does have a cool head and a warm heart...

Mike gets a lot of criticism, but every personal encounter I've had with him has been positive.  Nobody is perfect, but I've always seen him be very gracious to fans.
116  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike receives Ella Award 2014 on: February 25, 2014, 07:57:37 AM
I read that Mike discovered Jeff when he was playing at a bar in Santa Barbara, and ended up hiring him.

Brian already knew Jeff since 1976.  Fanboy Jeff met Brian at Brian's house in Bel-Aire in 1976.

Could somebody share in detail the story of how Jeff met Brian back in 75' or 76'?
117  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Interesting Ebay find on: February 14, 2014, 07:12:38 PM
That would be a dream, but it's the standard 90's lineup: Mike, Carl, Al, & Bruce.  They signed it after a post game concert.

Can anyone shed light on the thought process as to why this seller would think this autographed minor league baseball is an item especially valuable?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Al-Jardine-Signed-Autographed-Baseball-Beach-Boys-Endless-Summer-Surfer-Proof-/251450820462

While at the same time, I can certainly see how a  GV raft would be desired!  ( Crowd ride the raft chasing a beach ball, anyone? )

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-SUNKIST-RUBBER-INFLATABLE-RAFT-GOOD-Vibrations-ORANGE-Juice-OJ-LOGO-/151231682475

It always amazes me when people get low quality baseballs signed.  They pretty much never hold the signature for very long.  The signature usualy ends faded or bleeding very badly.  And that price for an Al Ardine signed baseball is crazy!  Seriously, I bought an Official Major League Baseball signed by 4 Beach Boys (including Carl Wilson) for less than this.

500 bucks for a Billy Hinsche pick? If you asked him for one, he'd probably give it to ya. He's probably got a few in his closet or storage boxes. Billy played keys most of the time anyway.

Wonder how much an original Carl Wilson "Clem" pick would go for these days.

Is it a "Clem Howdy Wilson" pick or a "Clem Wilson" pick?

It's a Clem "Howdy" Wilson pick:

http://www.ebay.it/itm/AUTHENTIC-BEACH-BOYS-CARL-CLEM-HOWDY-WILSON-GUITAR-PICK-RARE-/181211156173

There's a "Slick" Wilson pick available too:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BEACH-BOYS-1970s-Carl-Wilson-Guitar-Pick-/380830795169

And a Cookie Wilson pick as well. Must be a variation as mine has "Cookie" in inverted commas.

http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/the-beach-boys-carl-cookie-wilson-tour-guitar

In all seriousness, if you do have a Cookie Wilson guitar pick, I would pay very well for it.  This is about the only Carl Wilson pick that I don't have.  Please message me if there is any way I could talk you into selling it.

This Billy Hinsche guitar pick is a steal at only $500...

AMEN!!
123  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Don Alleson Tour Jackets on: January 20, 2014, 06:01:23 PM
Does anyone know if The Beach Boys ever contracted Don Alleson to manufacture tour jackets for them?  It would have been in the late 70's to early 80's.

I don't think it will happen, but I certainly wouldn't mind an album produced by somebody other than Joe Thomas.
125  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is this ebay item legit? on: January 01, 2014, 07:37:38 PM
It is real.  I talked with the seller at length awhile ago about this and a set of Dennis Wilson drum sticks she had.  It's quite an unusual item, but it's not exactly the kind of thing I'd like to display in my music room.
