Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2018 Tour Thread

Nice of them to mention how Brian Wilson and CARL JARDINE are touring in Europe right now, after mentioning how "everyone knows the Beach Boys' story"... I remember one time seeing that "Brian Johnson" was playing on the tour. It's amazing how many factual errors appear in these type of articles. Wrong names. Wrong names put to pictures. Always just basic 'checkable' flubs.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Looking For Some Info On An Early Brian Wilson Guitar Pick
|
on: March 03, 2018, 11:46:17 AM

I have been collecting Beach Boys guitar picks for over 20 years, but I recently heard of a Brian Wilson pick that I'm unfamiliar with. There are many tortoise picks with white print from the 1980s. Most of them are Carl Wilson picks and there is an Al Jardine version. My question is, has anybody ever seen a tortoise pick with white print that has "Brian Wilson" on it?
My understanding was that all of the 1980s Brian Wilson picks were white with either blue or black print. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

KDS, having Denny and Carl sing their songs with the Mike Love Beach Boys is a very nice touch. I get choked up everytime they do that
Agreed, it's very cool. Especially at the C50 show with all surviving members onstage. Though, I think I'd prefer them to do a song Dennis actually wrote instead of Do You Wanna Dance. I was sitting in the front row at a C50 show. I'll never forget the look on Brian's face as he sat there watching his dead brothers sing on the screen. It was very emotional. I also remember Al looking a bit choked up as he watched Carl singing "God Only Know" on the screen. Sad, but beautiful.

One Christmas CD I regret parting with is "Hey Santa!" by Wendy and Carnie. This 1999 album features a guest vocal by Carl, and a vintage 1977 home recording with Brian on piano and the Beach Boys' children singing, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus". Fortunately, there are plenty available, it can be found cheap. On this note, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas! You can always hear it at pretty much any grocery store. They all seem to play "Hey Santa" very frequently.

What amazes me is that if you look at official sites such as VIP Nation, many of the very expensive "VIP" packages do NOT include a meet and greet. In relation to many of the tours, I think The Beach Boys are actually quite generous with their packages. I believe Mike & Bruce's VIP package is about $250 which gives you soundcheck, photo op, autographs, merchandise, and more.

From Lee's post on PSF:
According to the new winter edition of Endless Summer Quarterly, published today:
Sunshine Tomorrow 2 - 29 additional tracks from the Smiley Smile sessions, the Lei'd in Hawaii Wally Heider Studio sessions, and the Wild Honey sessions, including the unreleased "Good News" Live Sunshine - 109 performances from 7 shows in 5 states during the 1967 tour
Holy cow! Best sequel since Police Academy 4! That's funny! But seriously… Stoked.

Listened to the "Getcha Back" clip. There isn't a lot of lead vocal in the excerpt, but Mike's voice still sounds horribly robotic.
This is making even Mike's leads on the C50 live album sound like a warm analog natural recording in comparison.
Is Mike's voice really in *that* bad a shape that Michael Lloyd had to crank the autotune? I would tend to think not. It's really, really distracting.
I'm starting to wonder if Mike actually held onto "Melinda's secret autotune device" and decided to use it on everything.
Also noticing that in both of the samples released so far, the backing vocals surprisingly have that anonymous "Looking Back with Love" sound. Super anonymous-sounding vocalists. Yes, I can hear Foskett on the high part on "Getcha Back", but for better and worse, so far it doesn't sound like a stack of Fosketts. Rather, it sounds like the backing vocals on LBWL, or the non-BB layers on the disco remake of "Here Comes the Night."
Where are you hearing the clips at?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A Response to a Request For a Positive Post...My Top 10 Beach Boys Observations

1. The Beach Boys are my all time favourite vocal group from either the Rock 'n' Roll or the resulting Rock eras. 2. No other group or band has ever come near matching the plenitude of outstanding vocal arrangements recorded and performed by the Beach Boys. 3. Pet Sounds. As close to perfection as an album can come. From the first listening in Mid May 1966 'til today it hasn't lost a step. They should use it in school music classes. 4. Prior to October 10, 1966 NO single in the history of recorded music came anywhere near being as ground breaking as the Quantum Aural Leap known as Good Vibrations. 5. Brian Wilson is unique...almost beyond comparison...as a creative musical soul. His inspiration is long lasting and worldwide...and will be for centuries to come. 6. If there has ever been a better singer than Carl Wilson...I have yet to feel it. He was also an outstanding human being...not flawless...but REAL...and kind...and talented. 7. Sunflower. Just to prove that Pet Sounds wasn't a fluke. Friends and 20/20 are no slouches either. Nor is Surf's Up. And The Good Vibrations box set rules. 8. After over 54 years of listening, purchasing, attending and thoroughly enjoying the huge majority of their body of work...they can still bring a happy tear to the eye LIVE. 9. These guys, collectively, sound even better without any backing instrumentation as is evidenced by oh-so-many of their A cappella recordings. [like the Pet Sounds box] 10. No other singing group in the history of popular music has ever sounded anywhere near as ethereal as The Beach Boys. There's no one else who collectively compares. -------------------------------------------
11...BONUS...SMiLE. Finally realized. First by Brian and his outstanding crew and then...ultimately...the original recordings were fashioned into a version of pure MAGIC.
I couldn't agree with you more. Everything is spot on. This is what it is all bout. The first time I heard "God Only Knows", I was very young, but it changed everything. That was the first time I ever felt a song. In my opinion, "God Only Knows" is still the most beautiful thing ever recorded.
