I found this one in a cut-out bin way back and have always enjoyed the music of that album. One of the best songs is Denny Doherty's version of Millennium's "To Claudia on Thursday". However I'm looking for the special radio copy with music only, preferably in digital form. If you can help, please PM me. Thx!!!

Why do we always think "albumwise"? Why do we always talk about SMILE as a finished product - but then it wasn't. The creation of songs is an ongoing, endless process. How do we really know SMILE was "abandondoned"? Was it really? How do we know Diamond head and many songs written later on couldn't have been on a later version of SMILE, like the one that was going to come out in the 70's? Yes, there was a track list back in 1966, but was SMILE really meant to be that way? We really don't know, do we? Only Brian knew for sure - or maybe he didn't... Or maybe he really didn't care... Yes, we have the 2004 release, but in the early 00's Brian was another person, not the 1966 Brian that most of us know - and miss... Yeah, maybe he' smessing with us for kicks. Maybe the '67 announcement that it was cancelled was just a put on. Maybe the later tracks that surfaced were just parts of a work in progress that he was teasing us with. So - please tell me - do we have a starting date and an ending date for Smile? E.g. they started recording Smile on [insert date] and ended on [insert date] ?? Hmmmm

Like the release says, 4 CDs, 2 LPs, 2 45s - I make that eight discs. Yes, but why different media? Guess that some of the stuff on the cd's will turn up on the LP's/45's. They're talking about cd1 containing the "real" Smile - then what will be on the LPīs/45īs? And isn't it so, that most of us have already heard - haaaaven't we... - 90-95% of the material? This is my understanding of the breakdown, arrived at by actually reading the article in Billboard. Thanks for the extended breakdown. Dear Andrew, I did read the article but it was a quick read at the job so I missed some parts. Seems we'll just have to wait and see...

What I would like to have in the box set (if it comes out - we've heard it all before, haven't we... ;/ ) is a dvd where someone explains in detail the intelligent moves of the tracks. Like in "Cabinessence", right after "mellow", where the lead and the banjo intertwines (or how to say it - sorry my English is not so good). I hadn't noticed how clever it was until I read a story about it - or was it an interview in a documentary? Please help...

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Celebration + Brian questions
|
on: December 23, 2009, 05:13:14 PM

Celebration question: Many years ago I used to trade tapes/records and one tape contained a "punchy" version of Almost Summer (no, not the KRTH 101 version). Does anyone know anything about that version, I haven't seen it on any b**ts...
Brian question: Steve Dahl once played a one-minute demo of Brian doing Let him run wild, very similar to the original, very crispy, it was not the version that was later release on the Imagination album... Is the complete demo version available anywhere?
Cheers and Merry Xmas!!! Bengt Stenstrom, Sweden

Thanks for sharing the pic. Good to see Brian happy... And to all who still believe in the "cold war": Look, no soldiers pointing at Brian and Scott... ;-) I believe Brian's home town, Chicago, is a lot more dangerous... :-( "We share the same biology Regardless of ideology What might save us, me, and you Is that the russians love their children too" (Sting)

Thanks for your replies. Exactly what I meant - Brian can/could write complex songs and still sounding very simple, like This whole world. It will probably take a 100 years till the music critics understand that... His "school" of songwriting ought to be in all schools of music. Bengt

There was a post about You need a mess of help to stand alone. That song is clearly underestimated. It's always been one of my favorite BB songs. Yes it's kinda strange but at the same time not. And I guess that's the strength of Brian and the BB. Just listen to the ending of the song - how many different melodies can you find? The same with This whole world? Could someone please tell me what key that song is in? Cheers Bengt Stenstrom
