...or they've decided to perpetuate the SMiLE myth by bringing it this close to release and then scuttling it for another 46 years.
So true, won't believe it till it's in my hands. Even then I'll be skeptical.
Translation: even though Mike Love ostensibly put his signature on the dotted line to permit the "Smile" box, Love or his attorneys could still stop the release with objections to the liner notes or mixes.
We'll probably get a box full of Transcendental Meditation outtakes... ;P /B

Just read the updated SMILE info on Wiki:
Future Release On February 3rd, 2011, Alan Jardine spoke to Examiner.com to inform them that "Capitol Records plans to issue a Beach Boys version of Smile sometime this summer to begin the celebration of The Beach Boys’ 50th anniversary.
"...Smile..." "...to begin the celebration..." So how will they finish off??? /B

Strange album - worst of the BB?
Only half (1:37) of Lady Lynda. Carl drunk (?) on my favorite All this is that - btw, it's 7:51 with a loooong Charles Lloyd sax solo (great!!). Horrible singing many songs, esp on Surfer girl, H&V & Surfin USA.
Highlight though is Dennis and Your'e so beautiful!!

Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Beach Boys Soviet "ribs" (flexis) ?

I 'm looking at a BBC documentary called "How The Beatles Rocked The Kremlin". This from a site: http://extravagantcreation.wordpress.com/2010/11/24/how-the-beatles-rocked-the-kremlin/"The most fascinating part of the film, for me, was seeing how bootleg Beatles recordings were made by transferring their songs, which had been recorded on tape recorders from foreign radio broadcasts, into cut grooves on used radiographic film, i.e. old, discarded x-rays of, mostly, lungs. The resulting “flexi-disks,” which could be carried on one’s person hidden inside a coat sleeve, were sold on the black market, at great personal risk to buyer and seller from the Soviet authorities, for three rubles a pop. The flexi-disks were referred to as “ribs” because of the x-ray images on them." Here's another link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8232235.stmDoes anyone know of any Beach Boys "ribs"?? /B

It's strange to see a boot listed on Amazon, but it happens occasionally, and clearly did in that case. Through the Amazon marketplace feature, it's possible for independent sellers to list stuff like that occasionally. Of course, it's removed if noticed by any of the powers that be.
Yikes - who wants boots... ;P

Thanks for the link! And now back to the real world. I find these facts very strange. (about Beatles Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever - from Wikipedia) "In the UK, the pairing famously failed to reach #1 in the singles charts, stalling one place below Engelbert Humperdinck's "Release Me". In the US the song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a week before being knocked off by The Turtles song "Happy Together"". EH more popular than the Beatles? And only one week at the top in the US? Those songs are some of the most well-written pop songs ever! And this also from Wikileaks, sorry ...pedia: ""Sloop John B" was extremely successful, scoring a #3 hit in the U.S. and #2 in Great Britain. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" reached #8 in the U.S. Its flip side, "God Only Knows," was another #2 single in Britain, but reached only #39 in the States. The LP broke into the Top Ten in the U.S., belying its reputation as a commercial failure there. In Australia, the album was only released under the title The Fabulous Beach Boys on the Music for Pleasure label". (!!!) On the other hand, "Good vibrations" made it to #1 both in the UK and the US - so was SMILE really ahead of its time? Could perhaps "Surf's up" have made it to the top of the charts? Who knows???

Gee, who here has wondered that for the last 40 some odd years? Well, to-and-fro, so I thought it was time to brush the dust away... I'm just happy we'll be seeing SMiLE in some form.
Me too!!! I had it been a success... who knows? I still think something like Wild Honey would have come next. The Beatles went back to a more stripped down sound, so perhaps The Beach Boys would have too... But then again, had SMiLE been a success perhaps it would have influenced the Beatles into a different direction and the two groups would have continued to play off each other.
Yes, perhaps Sgt Pepper had taken another direction? Maybe Smile had influencenced other people/artists? Pet Sounds + Smile contains (-ed) some very intelligent music - could Brian top that? How far can a genious go before a breakdown? Something like Wild Honey seems reasonable. Look at the Beatles what happened. The albums following Sgt Pepper (and Penny Lane/SFF for that matter) were (IMHO) not in the same class. For most of us fans Smile is the Holy Grail of music, but now, 40 years later, will it be marketed as such? Or will it be just another "Indie" release?
