177  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / 50th anniversary - Blondie & Ricky on: June 12, 2011, 02:55:22 PM
If the BB are gonna do 50th anniversary concerts, I hope Blondie & Ricky join them - after all they were full-fledged members and some of the best BB songs/albums come from that period. Smiley

BTW, suggested listening - "Between us" by Blondie from 2006 - a really nice album. Listen here:

And why not Glen Campbell?  Smiley

178  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / "Let hium run wild" unreleased version 1995-96 on: June 12, 2011, 01:30:53 PM
In 1995-96 Steve Dahl (I think it was) interviewed Brian about "Imagination" and played a crispy version of "Let him run wild"
(or a minute of it) that has not seen the light of day ever since. This version differs from the
one on "Imagination" and the '65 version. Why wasn't this version released?

Were there more songs recorded during those sessions that weren't released?

180  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Let him run wild 1995-96 outtake on: June 12, 2011, 09:42:13 AM
I believe this crispy version is from Steve Dahl radio show 1995-96. But has anyone more info on
the recording? Was anything else recorded during those sessions - and not released???

The mag is supposed to be out on June 15, so how come the Ebay seller already has copies?
Also, "It’s in all good newsagents" - at what price?

This from the BW message board:

"Details about the special SMiLE edition of Mojo Magazine!!!

(posted by HarryApplemoos on June 10, 2011 at 6:13 am)

Message:

It’s a new kind of MOJO Special Edition, a deluxe package devoted to the decade that a sage once described as the greatest in the history of mankind. Centring on the still-astonishing story of the Beach Boys’ Smile, finally to be granted release in something close to its original intended form, MOJO ’60s includes an exclusive, super-collectible, 7" vinyl 45 of Smile’s once-mythic Cabinessence, on special, sunshine-coloured vinyl, and in-depth stories on the Rolling Stones’ Between The Buttons, acid and The Red Krayola. Plus unseen Hendrix, Dylan’s 1966, a Baron Wolman portfolio, Roy Harper on the first moon landing, and some group called The Beatles. It’s in all good newsagents from next Wednesday, June 15."

It's hard to say, parts of it sound like the Imagination mix, but more of a stripped down...that's something Brian was missing on Imagination, HORNS

Doesn't sound at all like the Imagination mix to me, not to mention the fact that it's in a different key (which isn't necessarily proof of anything, but worth noting nevertheless).  The bigger clues are the fact that there's no organ during the verses, and horns are obviously much more prominent (which I agree were sorely missed on Imagination).

This version is IMO the best version (60's/90's). The question is - what other songs were recorded with this crispy sound - and not released? IMO - again - "Imagination" was quite lame, don't know why it turned out that way. Why wasn't this version of "LHRW" released???

I also believe Brian wanted "Smile" to be a happy, crispy, up-tempo album...

I can't remember what site it was from, but I remember reading in my files that a recording of Let Him Run Wild was made in the mid to late 90s with Brian, Carnie, and Wendy...was this during the sessions for The Wilsons or IJWMFTT or using the backing from the Imagination album?

I'm sure the results were better than what came out on the Imagination album.

Maybe the snippet (one minute or so - I have it somewhere) that was played on a Steve Dahl show (I believe?) came from those sessions??

I'd like to see/hear that...Youtube is an excellent source.  Wink

Found it on an old cd, so here you go - grab it while you can... Wink  ( www.keepvid.com or www.snipmp3.com )

I'm with Jon - All Summer Long is the definitive early sixties California lifestyle concept album.

From Wikipedia:
"The album was released in July [1964], peaking at #4 in the United States, and being certified gold; the album did not make the UK charts, however."

Can't believe ASL did not make the charts in the UK. And that Surfin USA didn't make the charts until 1965!!

I may be wrong, but wouldn't the reason for this be that "Surfin' USA" wasn't released in the Uk till '65?

Exactly - and what is even more strange is that "Surfer girl" was released in 1967!!!
And that "Party" - which is a true summer album - was released in November (US) and February (UK)...
And that "Pet Sounds" and "Summer days" were released simultaneously in the UK...
And... and... Ahhh!

Huh?

Brian only lived in St. Charles (outside of Chicago) for maybe a year, back when IMAGINATION was being recorded there. He returned to California shortly thereafter.

Okey - thanks.

1a. Was "Country pie" recorded in studio by the BB?
(Yes, I know Celebration did it)

1b. If not, why? It was a huge crowd pleaser back then. Thoughts?

2a. Is the American bandstand "Almost summer" w/Brian available somewhere?
I had it once but lost it - they also did "Cruisin" I believe (?)

2b. Did the BB record a studio version?

2c. Is there an instrumental version of "AS" available?

Thx

Perhaps Murry had an affair with Jo Ann? She used to sit between Murry and Audree in his car, remember? Perhaps Murry and Jo Ann went to England together? Perhaps he gave the boys (because someone found out about the affair) that money to "shut up or else..." He was a violent man and the boys were afraid of him. And after all, this was 1961 and you wouldn't want people to learn about such affairs... Just a thought...

When 11 I was at a party in a cosy cottage, we played records all night, someone put on "California girls". When I heard the opening bars I was hooked!! Smiley

And then came Pet Sounds - my first album... What a thrill!! Smiley

Let's talk Pacific Ocean Blue! [....] Take a look at the personnel Dennis had on this album and the result was just an absolutely great production!

It would be interesting to read interviews w/all of the people listed...

On the other hand: why not January, then they can use the old promos... Grin

But a million units? Hmmm...

199  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Smile release date on: May 22, 2011, 12:42:05 AM
Please put news about the release date here. Thanks.

So, first it was July 12th, then August 9th:

http://www.directcurrentmusic.com/dc-music-news-feed/2011/5/4/beach-boys-smile-sessions-bumped-to-august-9-street-date.html

And now, from Facebook:

Peter Reum: "Looking forward to the new Mojo with the Cabin Essence/Wonderful 45! This time, maybe we will sell a million units in January...or maybe fewer...but the point is that this time it`s coming out!"

Brian Christie: "The article says the box set should be out in September, so at least we now have a ballpark date...."

And here's the MOJO interview that says September:

Or, you could try the BEST Beach Boys website there is, and look in the media section.
THIS one, of course.
Kinda amazing that people don't look around here more, before going elsewhere

Ummm you never learn - help is closer than you think...  Wall
