I really enjoy this set (the full box). There are som gems and of course the sound is superb!!!! One thing is the closeness or nearness (what's the expression?), especially on Cool cool water part 1, starting at around 1 minute. It's as if you are standing in the middle and the boys are singing right into your ear! The same with H&V: Cantina (2-17)! Fantastic!!! How do you achieve that, technically?? Funny guys: One count-in goes "One, two, one two nice" and another one goes "One, two, here we go"!!! Tried mixing in the Vegetables fade section (4-1) right after the Chorus 1 track (3-24), works quite well... "Ulla" (Veg., 2nd chorus) is a Swedish girl name - wonder if Mike has something to do with that... Cheers

Not complaining, just wondering... (please let me wonder... ) ...about the "non-Smile" songs, Cool cool water, TTL etc, why are they on the SMILE sessions album? It's not called the "'66/'67 sessions album" or such... ...say, had Brian changed his mind in '67/'68 - perhaps CCW could have been a Smile track? Was it ever considered a Smile track?

Essentially.....
If you buy the 2 disc, you aren't getting a single second of music that's not on the boxset, apart from digital copies of H&V Part 1 & 2. This is easily remedied, if, like me, you buy the offending items off iTunes or 7digital or emusic or something for £2 tops. Easy peasy.
What you're getting, and what is confusing you, is edited highlights from the sessions disc. But there is no new music on it.
Thx! I remember reading somewhere that the standalone vinyl album set was different from the one in the box set (?).

See you again next year when the rumored "Wild Honey" project nears completion. Then we can discuss that project.
It'll never happen, trust me. Right. And everything post-Smile is of little interest, since it's history as it CAME to be, NOT history as it was MEANT to be...

"Teeter Totter Love" is groovy, man! That's such a swinging sixties track. And honestly, Jasper's singing makes it funny, too. It could've been a cool novelty single!
Actually, what IS TTL doing on the box set?? Is it a Brian Wilson retrospective or is it the Smile Sessions?? Puzzled... /b

Astounding! Thanks a lot!!! Also make you think - what if you (JMZ) had met Brian in the early 2000's when he started working on his version of Smile... Yeah... Mind-boggling, right... Fantastic mixing - perhaps you could do a "regular" Smile mix the way you did this one? That is, in the "right" order... And yes Hypehat, IMO, there will definitely be some cool stuff done "Post-box". By the way, was it AGD who told that some unheard bootleg Material would suddently get out of nowhere after the TSS release ?
Oooo, great news indeed... /b

[...]- deleting "Look" and "Holidays" (which I feel would NOT have been on a 1967 version!) [...]
Thanks for the reviews!! Perhaps Look and Holidays were meant for the NEXT album (the follow-up to Smile)... Will we ever know??? No, NOT Smiley Smile, NOT Friends, NOT Wild Honey, NOT 20/20..... /b

I was surprised though how well he sang, spot on most of the time. Watch the Letterman show and Brian singing "They can't take...", it's a disaster. But Saturday night was really enjoyable! The story of Brian's live appearances, boiled down into two sentences. What? Not at all, only that particular performance....

Went to the Saturday concert, flew in from Sweden Saturday afternoon and back again early Sunday morning. Spent some £400 total but it was worth every penny. Seeing Brian live is, well, an experience. Sometimes it seems as if he's going to sleep or is thinking about something completely different - but then suddenly he looks up and sings his line. There were even a few times he had a Smile on his face. But man he has a hard time walking, poor guy. I was surprised though how well he sang, spot on most of the time. Watch the Letterman show and Brian singing "They can't take...", it's a disaster. But Saturday night was really enjoyable! A few surprises, Drive-in, Wendy, Goin' home, The little girl..., Surfer moon, Mary had a little lamb. And he ended with L&M. The band was great, very tight, excellent singing and playing. Loved that the Stockholm Strings were there. /Bengt

Ok, here's a question about the SMiLE box set tracklist. I seem to remember Tones/Tune X being one of the songs included. Which version do you think it'll be? The "strings" version*, the keyboard overdub version, or the one with an instrumental insert near the end with the guitar riff?
*I called it the "strings" version because that's what it always sounded like to me. It sounds like cellos to me. I could be totally wrong though.
I'm thinking it'll be the one they have most tape of. The mellotron version then...

I think if Beach Boys had broken up after Surf's UP their legacy might rival the Beatles. But 40 years of Full House episodes have taken their toll.
Kokomo didn't help either! Damn catchy tune though Good tune but i always felt Kokomo was a fluke,a bit like Pee Wee Hermen knocking out Mike Tyson. Gotta give credit where credits due though. Now the ORIGINAL version w/John Phillips is something completely different! Simply great!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-CAIGNgEA8/b I actually think The Boys' version is better. Guess it has to do with being used to that one. The Beach Boys version is better. Certainly more commercial, and that is due to Mike's chorus hook, and Carl's vocal. Did you notice that Phillps' original version of Somewhere Near Japan is on that YouTube page, as well? That's not as good as the Beach Boys' version, either, but I like it better than Phillips' original Kokomo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRR9Za258Bw&feature=relatedSorry for going off topic. As you were. At least we're talking the Beach Boys...

Scuse me [while I kiss the sky] I'm from Sweden so my English is not so good... Anyhow...
What were the limitations back then? When Smile was about to be released the 33 rpm vinyl album - with an A-side and a B-side, and 5-7 songs on each side - was the only format available. Also, most of the songs back then were supposed to be 2-4 minutes long. No-one wanted "symphony-long" tunes in the 60's. There was however a break in the late 60's, with songs like Eloise (5 min - Barry Ryan), Mac Arthur Park (7 min - Richard Harris) and of course Hey Jude (7 min - Beatles). I am quite sure the limitations - vinyl albums, short songs - were _part of_ (please note - part of) Brian abandoning the project. Otherwise perhaps we could have had an interactive sort of release. There's the excellent Smile Project cd floating around which is a good example of how it could have been.
