1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Johnny Depp & Jeff Beck re-recorded Dennis Wilson on: January 18, 2023, 03:00:20 PM
I think I recall the title Metropolis…but I wonder if that eventually came out as half moon bay.

Different titles in the BMI database.

At the time, Rolling Stone reported that Brian was recording three separate albums. One with Beck, largely instrumental, one with female guest singers, and one with Al and Blondie. We ended up getting an album was was a mixture of the latter two, but nothing of the first.
I might be wrong but I seem to recall hearing that Half Moon Bay was intended for the Beck album?

I really love the "new" version of Must Be a Miracle. I wonder if there's any other re-recordings of the Paley material we haven't heard yet?

The vocal on it sounds much closer to Imagination-era than the Paley sessions, but the backing track doesn't have that sheen from Imagination.

With this discussion of That's Why God Made the Radio's melody, I gotta say I always thought it was more indebted to Silhouettes by The Rays in the same way Don't Worry shows influence from Don't You Care by the Buckinghams or It's Just A Matter Of Time with In the Still of the Night.
Don't You Care was released in 1967 I believe and Don't Worry Baby in 1964.

Not Don't Worry Baby, but Don't Worry from No Pier Pressure.

I'd be surprised if somebody other than Brian played drums on Funky Pretty.

Is it just me or does Soulful Old Man Sunshine have a totally different vocal take? He doesn't say "shunshine" on this one, which seems to against that being the reason why Carl didn't want it out.

Holy smokes, that new San Miguel mix is great! Especially enjoy how prominent the falsetto vocals on the coda are now.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Demos posted to Brian Wilson's website on: July 19, 2021, 09:17:32 AM
Just saw this, so apologies if there's already a thread. I checked Brian Wilson's website for tours and noticed a link to the 1995 version of Desert Drive on YouTube. Found here: https://youtu.be/Md__7YYNbxA The description mentions more demos available on his website. Many of these I've never heard in such good quality before.

These are divided into different decades and include the Paley sessions: https://brianwilson-2022.squarespace.com/1990s

His 80s work: https://brianwilson-2022.squarespace.com/1980s

And Love You demos: https://brianwilson-2022.squarespace.com/1970s

Plus That Lucky Old Sun demos: https://brianwilson-2022.squarespace.com/2000s

Includes a lot of famous bootlegs (Bob Dylanless Spirit of Rock 'n' Roll, what was called Turning Point is apparently named "Angel," Terry She Needs Me, some of the Paley sessions) and some real curiosities (like an alternate mix of Sunshine, a version of Let's Go To Heaven In My Car which sounds nearly identical to the single, and a clip from the tracking session for Child Is The Father Of The Man and Surf's Up).

Is a Brian-centric box set imminent? Or are these just a website exclusive?

I might be wrong, but I think I'm Going Your Way was from the sessions for Sunflower, not 20/20, so it will most likely be released next year.

Thanks! I actually created an account a year or two ago and didn't realized I'd never posted here, haha.

Also, there was an album of instrumental orchestrated arrangements of Beach Boys songs playing before the show began. I can't confirm it because I don't have copies on-hand, but I'm pretty sure it was the two Hollyridge Strings Play The Beach Boys albums.

Just saw the Louisville show!

Brian was in pretty good voice, he seemed more excited to sing on the faster songs like I Get Around. Although he sounded less interested on some of the songs where Rob Bonfiglio sang most of the lead, I think he was overall he was pretty good!

I'm not totally familiar with all the arrangements they've been using on this tour, so maybe this was normal, but nobody did any vocals over the tag in I'm Waiting for the Day.

Blondie was wonderfully energetic every time he appeared on stage. I think he actually changed outfits in between when he first appeared and when he came back. I didn't know that Feel Flows was in their setlist now, so that was a pretty cool surprise. Also – does anybody know why Blondie isn't out for the full show? He appeared about nine songs in for the two he sang lead on, left, appeared during Sloop John B, left again, showed up during Pet Sounds, and then left until the encore. But every time he was stage though, he was great! Before he started Feel Flows he talked about how good it makes him feel to tour with Brian.

Also, I really dug Al on Here Today.
