In 2042, we'll be up to the 20th re-release of this album, with different bonus tracks, remixes of several core tracks - and new vocals by Al on the title song. And he'll still sound like he's 30-something.

I look back at video of BB concerts from the post-Dennis years, and Carl is the only one I can see and hear really playing. Bruce was already into his "keyboard as a stage prop" bit, Al might be playing guitar, but most times I can't distinguish it in the mix. Brian, if he's there, well, I can't really hear if he's playing anything, either. It's like none of them took their instrumental abilities seriously. Carl, though, being the musical director, is very present, both with his guitar playing and his singing.
And that's probably why a lot of my friends thought the guys did not play on their records.
78  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What would you want on an expanded IN CONCERT? on: December 11, 2022, 08:55:28 PM
I only have the 2 disc Sail on Sailor, so don't know what I am missing from the bigger boxes; but I would want live versions of Long Promised Road, Feel Flows, Surf's Up...anything they performed from the post-Party albums.
And of course the original Beach Boys In Concert remastered.
I can actually imagine THEM doing this if SOS sells well, because after 1973, there's not a lot of great new music coming from the Boys. Although I could certainly enjoy live sets from 1974/75.

That song is the closest they ever got to sounding like a real rock band.
Yeah, the Beach Boys were never a real rock band.
"You say we're manufactured, to that we all agree, so make your choice and we'll rejoice in never being free"

No, but Brian does.
I know I do what Brian does anytime someone hands me a gold record - I take it to the pool.

He's so relaxed and charming there.
I didn't know Dennis played guitar!
82  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Does Bruce Hold Some Kind Of Record? on: November 19, 2022, 06:53:37 PM
I'm sure he holds a record for most decades wearing shorts on stage.
He might even set another record next year when he belatedly releases a new solo album, "Going Pubic".

Hey Joshilyn, I was just wondering if you plan to do some videos about the new "Sail on, Sailor" set, too? I would love to see some of your analyses on songs like "You need a Mess of Help", "Here She comes", "The Trader" etc.
i hope so

I guess some people have such short attention spans they can’t read the articles linked. Obviously, the original album isn’t unheard. The thread title comes from the article linked in my first post. As Apple releases NEW mixes and unreleased stuff I will post them.
FYI-this mix is 20 some seconds longer,

In the meantime, maybe you want to read that article and educate yourself on what the project is all about 🤙
That was not my point. Speaking of short memories, people seem to have forgotten about the Anthology project in the 90's. That's where I first heard most of this stuff - the alternate versions, remixes, etc. I'm just tired of Apple/Capitol/etc. presenting this stuff like it should be new to all of us. Did everyone toss out their Anthology cd's?  still play them.

Thanks, Rocker, for sharing these.

So, I’d like all of the unreleased stuff, acapellas, backing tracks, etc. but I do not own a record player. I’d like a CD so I can dump it into iTunes to put it on my phone. What are my options?

Can anyone recommend great record players too?

I seem to recall with Feels Flows I didn’t have this problem. I don’t want to miss out on unreleased stuff. And I’d like the booklet thing.
I refer you to the expert.

88  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Kokomo Spirits on: October 28, 2022, 08:20:48 PM
Forgetting the alcohol/ Mike thing for a minute, I just googled ‘Hit Songs 1988’. As well as Kokomo, ‘Simply Irresistible’ by Robert Palmer came up.
Just how successful would a aftershave or cologne be named after a 35 year old song? Every year hundreds of products are released using much more relevant artists and they still fail. The young liquor buyer will see a name that means nothing to them with a picture of some old guy who they don’t know and walk right on pass. I also don’t think October is the season for this product and I doubt it will be around next summer. Just my 2 cents.
But Kokomo is Mike's last big hit, and in his eyes, his crowning jewel. I'm sure he'll be onstage at 100 still bragging how "I wrote a #1 song WITHOUT Brian, who was busy putting out a big turkey of an album with his doctor".
I would throw that back at Mike as "yes, Brian and his collaborators gave us a complete album, while you, Mike, could only cough up 1 SONG for all of 1988".

Would we be happier with Mike if he was fronting a campaign to bring back prohibition?
90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) on: October 22, 2022, 09:50:15 PM
In case anybody was still wondering, while I downloaded this when it came out, I did finally snag the physical CD. It does indeed exist.

Where did you find it? Was it pricey?
I'm not too impressed with today's vinyl.
91  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Kokomo Spirits on: October 22, 2022, 09:48:36 PM

what a douchebag.
Roll Eyes
I don't get upset about these things - and I know I should, because as God is my witness, Mike Love is the most despicable creature on the planet!
 Evil
These things just make me chuckle. It's no more upsetting that seeing him invite Jimmy Buffett on stage - a man with songs like Boat Drinks, God's Own Drunk, and Why Don't We Get Drunk (and Screw).
Mike likes to talk the talk about drugs and alcohol, but clearly he enjoys a good stiff drink as much as the next drunkard.
 police
Maybe he can sell Dylan's whiskey at his bars.
92  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Beatles’ Unheard ‘Revolver’: A Blockbuster Archival Release on: October 09, 2022, 01:46:37 PM
Not unheard. It was on Anthology 2, released in 1996. People have short memories these days.
93  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Beatles on: October 09, 2022, 01:45:39 PM
I love "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love". Absolutely love those recordings! The video for "Real Love" is pretty bad though.

The "Get Back" movie I didn't watch. A friend of mine and I were going to but after he zapped through all three parts and basically only saw talking bits and other stuff that didn't seem to be very interesting, we decided not to. I only made sure to watch the rooftop performance (I love that and the idea of it). And honestly I don't feel like I missed anything. But I'm not a fan. If I was I probably would have a different view (although, I still haven't seen "Long promised Road" yet).

I'm not a huge Beatles fan either! But I lived through their entire career and I do appreciate their immense talent as a band.

I think if you weren't to watch the talking bits, the rest of the film would make no sense. It's the talk that drives Get Back: Paul's Herculean efforts to create something good out of the mess they started off with; John's ability to twist everything into hilarious one-liners; George's complaints about being ignored (and walking out of the sessions at one point); and Ringo's lack of talk, but when it comes to trying out stuff, he's onto it straight away.

My wife and I watched all three parts and were mesmerized. That's another thing -- if you miss out on the "preamble", the concert seems facile, whereas it was a major struggle to put it on at all. And Billy Preston's entry into the project at a late stage is worth the price of admission alone -- what an inspiration he proved to be!

Just my two euro cents. Wink
I still haven't seen it. I don't get cable tv at all, but I didn't think it would be a big deal; I figured I would buy the DVD when it came out. I looked in Target, Wal Mart, all the local stores, nobody has it. They want to force you to buy it online.
So I am waiting for a copy from the library. In the meantime, I found a bootleg copy of Let it Be in our thrift store, so I will watch that again.
94  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Album Closers on: October 07, 2022, 11:41:41 PM
I don't really think of Funky Pretty as an album closer, because I always play Mount Vernon and Fairway after it. Surf's Up and Caroline, No are pretty hard to top as album closers.
from the Bobster, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You, Wedding Song, and Every Grain of Sand are great album closers. Hard to beat A Day in the Life from the Beatles. And after the long dive that is "The Beatles" - nearly 2 hours of music - Good Night is a perfect way to end that odyssey.
95  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Elvis Presley on: October 07, 2022, 11:38:11 PM
I think it’s interesting how much Elvis became a “feel” singer in the 1970s. If he got emotionally involved in the song, he would really give it his all but if it was an old number that no longer spoke to him then he often treated it as a joke. For example in 1968 he gave phenomenal performances of heartbreak hotel and love me but as early as 1970 they became listless throwaways
There were only a few of the oldies he still loved - That's All Right, Lawdy Miss Clawdy, A Big Hunk O Love, My Baby Left Me. The other he just rushed through. He was much more interested in songs like Polk Salad Annie, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, How Great Thou Art, or Hurt.
96  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian’s vocal change Redux on: October 07, 2022, 11:28:07 PM
Those events were four years apart. And almost every one was controlled heavily by Landy. They were entirely different than the situation that arrived with Imagination and beyond, when Brian did exponentially more (and shorter) interviews. What's more, the pieces Jason Fine wrote, along with the astonishing Harvey Kubernik one, show that he could still be talkative when the mood struck.
Brian did a lot of press around the time of IJWMFTT and OCA, too. And he had a LOT to say.
97  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian’s vocal change Redux on: October 05, 2022, 07:32:16 PM
Here’s the thing — Brian did almost no press from the late 60s to the late 90s. That’s almost 30 years. When he did give interviews, he was usually on uppers of some kind (legal or illegal). Once he was properly diagnosed, he actually began taking less medicine — but it was definitely of a more sedating, calming variety. That coincided with doing more press and, for Brian, no doubt getting much more bored and annoyed with the whole thing. So he became far more terse — and interestingly, also began to sing in a far more relaxed manner.
Well, he sure did a lot of press around the  time of his first solo album, and again when the "autobiography" was released. He didn't have any shortage of things to say then.

I love food.
98  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian’s vocal change Redux on: October 03, 2022, 10:39:27 PM
That is probably the worst bad take in BB fandom: “Brian was better when he was hopped up on bad meds because that made him more conversational”.

That's not what I said. And I think what we are seeing in that video is more the after effects of meds prescribed for him by Landy than anything he was taking in 1995.
99  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian’s vocal change Redux on: October 02, 2022, 06:13:26 PM
Talking about changes…that 1995 interview and others from the 1994 to 1996 period are some of his most honest and verbose. After 1997 the vast majority of his interviews are pretty bad, terse and unrevealing. Wonder if it was a medicine change
Good observation. Yes, he was pretty talkative in IJWMFTT, and at times, very making observations of great depth. I assume the interview you refer to is the one where Brian is in the studio, has just done some work with Mike and Carl. I've gotten used to the nearly mute Brian of recent years, so it was surprising to see how verbose - and open and honest - he was there. He may have been suffering some bad side effects from some of the medicine he was on, but mentally, he's very sharp.

Remind me again, what is the actual release date for this thing? I don't do the whole pre-order thing. I will find it in a physical store when it's available.
