Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: BREAD (David Gates, James Griffin & Co.) - New Promo Video ...

Thanks for that link! Bread was great. Talented guys. David Gates never got the recognition he deserved for songwriting. Bread was a big part of my early AM radio listening experience.
Gates may not have recieved due recognition for songwriting....but compared to Griffin/Royer, he's the most praised writer in the biz! Still pisses me off how Elektra passed over all those great Griffin leads. These were the guys that won an Oscar for their song "For All We Know"...yet their own record label relegated them to b-side status.

I always thought it was silly that we had three different groups going out on tour, performing essentially the same show. I mean, sure Al and Brian initially picked more album cuts and lesser known hits, but eventually Mike and Bruce started doing that, too. So what would I rather have, Help Me Rhonda being performed by three different groups? or the group members TOGETHER singing it? I prefer together.

My girlfriend at the time thought Brian sounded bad on this album, but I think he's fine here. Maybe not as polished (or processed) as on the 88 album or SI, ...well, maybe that's why I like it. I think the songs work well with a slightly different tone to the backing vocals, and the stripped down arrangements. The one sore spot is that home recording of "Still I Dream Of it". He just sounds awful there.

If WIBNTLA is as good as advertised,I probably would have a tough time deciding between Sunflower and Surf's Up. I already do to a degree. I'd also have a hard time deciding between removing TALOYF and LAT
I doubt that WIBNTLA is the masterpiece it's supposed to be. Probably falls into the "it's classic because it's unreleased" catagory. Surf's Up is a very good album, but Sunflower is untouchable. I will blaspheme and say that I would even take Sunflower over Pet Sounds. It's a tossup between Sunflower and Smile.

What's your take on girls' singing voices, then? I guess Ann-Frid's voice is more lively and versatile. Occasionally she sounds like a classically trained singer, which is not necessarily a bad thing. But when Agnetha takes a solo and gives her emotional all... Hands down, she's the queen.
I guess I'd say their voices match their looks - Frida has the more smokey, adult sounding voice; Agnetha's is more girly, but they both have good range. I think their singing talents are often overlooked because B&B's writing is so strong, but of course it was the combination of all their talents that made for the magic.

The time between Landy's departure and the Don Was documentary. Those were mysterious days.
He seemed to disapear around then but the Don Was thing was started within a year or so of Landy being gone. Yeah, publicly, we weren't seeing/hearing anything, but he was working. I do remember seeing Brian for the first time post-Landy on a "history of rock and roll" special, spring 1995, and being mildly shocked at his weight gain. I'd grown so used to the rail thin Landy Brian.

One thing that annoyed me, back in 1988 when Brian's solo debut came out, he got tons of write ups in the music zines, but they wanted to talk mostly about the situation with Landy, instead of the album. It just seemed the controversy with Landy overshadowed the music. I'm not gonna say that prevented the album from being a big seller, but I felt it was minor miracle to have an album at all from Brian...and then to have it be the quality it was. But I guess Brian was meant to be a cult artist. I'm speaking Brian Wilson, solo artist.

How long was "Still Cruisin" on the album chart? I know it didn't peak very high, but it did go gold, so I would think it must've hung around the 200 for more than a couple months. One thing I don't like about the Soundscan era is how veteran acts will chart really high the first week out...and then quickly drop off the chart. It sounds impressive to say, for example "Bob Dylan had a #1 album in 2009", but then it drops off within just a couple months, unlike the 70's when he would be on the chart for half a year or more.

I don't expect them to do much on the recording side, simply because older acts like them don't sell anymore - except the GH comps like SOS. TWGMTR debuted high, and now, only a couple months later, is almost off 200. SOS will continue to sell year after year, because it's got the familiar hits on it. Things might be a bit different if radio had a place for 2012 BB's music. but we all know how horrible radio playlists are now. It won't surprise me if Al and David tour with Mike and Bruce, but Brian? He's never been a road dog. Yeah, he's toured a lot in recent years, but I don't believe for a minute that is his choice. The albums don't sell, so the money's gotta come from somewhere, and on the road is where Brian's handlers have put him. As long as Mike, Bruce, Al and David are out there representing his music "live", he really shouldn't have to do it...but we will see.

I got tix this morning. Cheap seats, though. After I ran my order through, I tried to see what seats would come up for the highest price (around $100), and Row A was still available fifteen minutes after the start of ticket sales. I don't think there's too much interest, going by that.
Prices were higher when Davy, Micky and Peter toured in 2011. Although I love the idea of Nez back with the group, it just feels like "what's the point?" with Davy gone. But I assume they will work some kind of tribute to Davy into the show. He was always the most enthusiastic about being a Monkee, Nez has gone through periods where he didn't want anything to do with the group. Okay, how about a reunion of the First National Band? Who is alive that could replace Red Rhodes?

We have great used record stores in the NW, and I can see no reason NOT to support them. Ebay is a last resort. Found an original Surfin' Safari lp for $7 at Half Price Books a couple years ago, NM. Summer Days - $20, mono, NM. The only "new' vinyl I have of the classics is Today, and it's a good one, but will keep in mind what others have posted here. I would be majorly pissed to get home and find out I had an off center pressing.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Friends vs. Sunflower

Both great, fantastic, super duper albums - probably the high points on Sunflower (This Whole World, Slip On Through, All I Wanna Do, Forever) are higher than the high points on Friends, however Friends has more of a consistent feel and doesn't have a big jarring clunker like Tears In The Morning slap-bang in the middle of it, and so i'm going to give my vote to the charming, sweet, beautifully melodic, understated Friends.
But I like that big jarring clunker...actually, it doesn't feel jarring to me...but Transcendental Meditation does...one of the worst pieces of music in the BB's catalog...and Diamond Head feels like filler. Side one of Friends is one of their best sides, though. But Sunflower is close to perfection all the way through.
