I would miss any and all songs from SS if it did not exist. Some fans compare SS to Love You, but I don't see it/hear it. Love You, sure, is underproduced, but not in the minimalist fashion of SS. And Love You contains some of the worst BB's vocals committed to vinyl. They may have been stoned out of their gourds during SS - well, except for Mr. Clean Jardine - but those vocals are sublime.

Reading this review makes me want to see the M&B show - but not for $70. Were those the cheap seats?  I would fork over $25-$30.

I don't doubt that some of Brian's "handlers" can be taxing on the nervous system. Unfortunately, Brian has always had someone like that around...once upon a time, it was daddy; later it was Landy. And these days.....

I know there are a lot of fans who don't like outsiders tinkering with Brian's works, but if the end result feels like a completed, polished production - i.e, BW88 or TLOS - then I will take those anyday over Love You. There are parts of Love You that are just painful to hear - Love is a Woman being example #1. I quite like parts of the album, but that grating synth sound gets tiresome after a few tracks. There was definitely some potential in the songwriting, but the record itself feels like "okay, this is the best Brian could crank out at the moment".

Just be glad the BB's never recorded a Full House album! I can imagine Mike's lyrics to such tunes as "How Rude!" "You Got it Dude!" "You're in Big Trouble, Mister!" And of course they'd have to include cameos from Comet the dog and Kimmy Gibbler. And the music video would've had a lot of footage of Lori Loughlin in a bikini.

I just never will understand the love here for the train wreck that is Love You.

Good friends with Jack Hoff.

Lovin' this thread! I wonder if there is an alternate PS cover with all the guys airbrushed out except Mike...and Bruce airbrushed in?
3384  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's new song on: March 29, 2013, 10:37:15 PM
I am seriously thinking about recording some of these! Honestly think "Mike Loves You" is a great album title....but alternate title might be T.T.P.O.O.M. Album (Taking the Piss Out of Mike Album).

IIRC, Return to Pepperland is an unreleased song from Paul, mid-80's. I think Phil Ramone produced it.

Hard to put myself in Brian's shoes and understand how a young guy with so much talent and a loving wife could be so insecure. I'm insecure, but I don't have his talent...or a loving wife.

I get the feeling that the owners of the intellectual property surrounding the Dynamic Duo feel that the 1960s series and things like J&DMB project the wrong image of the characters.  Too much levity, not enough grimness as has been the franchise's preferred stance since it started following the Dark Knight comic's atmosphere. So I figure that's why the series has never gotten through the hurdles for DVD release, and why J&DMB is consigned to download-land, with no prospect of the original cover art reaching a printing press again.
That's okay, I will hunt down the vinyl album. Shame, though, about the series never making it to DVD.  I taped them off local tv circa 1990-92, but those tapes are not the best sound or picture, would love to be able to toss them.

I want some "skits" like the early album. Nothing better than grumpy old men going at each other.
  LOL

Like "Marcella", "Drip Drop" is another example of Brian employing too slow of a tempo for the recorded version. Sped up, it sounds much better: https://soundcloud.com/george-vieira/drip-drop

I friggin love this version. The song actually makes sense! It sounds more like a BBs song, rocks like a hurricane and even smooths the vocal out some. Oh, and the primal cacophony of fucks at the end is thoroughly excellent
That song is a muthafuckah!

Bruce looked like a Kennedy in in his younger days.

(sung to a Kokomo/Summer in Paradise style melody/production) Back in the year of twenty twelve, I got the old band off the shelf, thought it would be fun, fun, fun to reunite, all shake hands and no more fight; spread the good vibrations all across the land, to surfer girls and boys and all shake hands, sing the old songs and do it again, SMiLe onstage and pretend we're friends; did a new album successful show after show, and that's why god made the radio, but when the tour was over all the fights resumed, and our p.r. wasn't autotuned, cause it's not.....(chorus) paradise, paradise, no, it's not so nice, cause we ended, we ended our summer in paradise......the fans wanted us to stay on tour, forever and ever now that's for sure, keep on singing songs of yesterday, songs of summer nights and summer days, but the mike and bruce show couldn't wait, Rhonda and wendy at the seaworld gate, gotta get back to anytown usa, all the casinos we have yet to play, instead of (chorus) paradise, paradise....etc
3393  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian adding 'motherfucker' in a Dion cover; awesome! on: March 27, 2013, 03:38:19 PM
Brian's potty mouth is nothing compared to Elvis Presley's. Every other word in the studio was muthafucka and God this and God that. Because we all know a real man proves his manliness with the size of his vocabulary of cuss words.
3394  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TWGMTR Follow-up on: March 27, 2013, 03:35:38 PM
Definitely no autotune. If the guys should like shite these days, let it all hang out, ala Love You. And no more Joe Thomas. That guy thinks Brian/Beach Boys are A/C; I want Brian to get into his SMiLe zone again, burning wood in the studio, falling into his French horn, and just general chaos. Maybe slip some LSD into his coffee, because we all know when Brian is off his rocker is when he makes his best music. Mike and Bruce don't even have to be there if it bothers them to much, they can take a vacation in Kokomo.

Striped shirts - if only they'd wear striped shirts, they'd rediscover themselves and their true mojo.

Wouldn't it be great if the building opposite the studio burned down and the president was assasinated the following day?
Yeah, that would send Brian on a real serious trip! Instead of Still SMiLiNG, we'd get Smiley Smile, Volume 2.  I could live with that. Brian, Mike, Al and David recording stoned vocals in a swimming pool....and Bruce adjusting the mic stand.

Mike Love is his own biggest enemy.
3396  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TWGMTR Follow-up on: March 26, 2013, 11:17:23 PM
Mike wouldn't be fazed because he has sang those songs for so long, while Bruce will go all "Hendrix at Monterrey" on his keyboard.
Yeah, set that damn thing on fire, Bruce, then smash it to pieces!
3397  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: My girlfriend's impressions of The Smile Sessions. on: March 26, 2013, 11:14:54 PM
My wife admits to liking Heroes and Villains and she loves Good Vibrations, and she likes all the early surf and car songs. The one BB song she thinks is too weird is Honkin Down the Highway although she says it has a good beat. And some of the stuff from Adult/Child that I played she said sounded like they were drunk or out of tune.

My Jan & Dean listening habit she can't understand, though.
The last thing I would play for someone not a serious fan of the BB's would be Adult Child or Love You.
3398  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love talks about C50 shows (March 26) on: March 26, 2013, 11:12:54 PM
What this ultimately boils down to are the fans' inability to let go.  The Beach Boys really stopped being the Beach Boys when Carl died (some would argue even long before that).  Last year's surprisingly cool reunion was a rare exception.  Let's be honest, these guys are senior citizens now with a long history of dysfunction.  I'm not against these guys reuniting if they are really into the idea, but if we have to force them into a room together just to satisfy our neediness for them to "keep it going", then forget it.
I almost wish they hadn't reunited last year. It sure doesn't seem to have healed old wounds - if anything, just opened them up further.

A shame, I watched a documentary from the 1980s that whitewashed Mike out of the group's history. I hope he does some promo work for the box set.
There's a more recent one, circa 2006, that includes him. I think all the guys are in it except Ray. Even Denny Laine is included.
