26  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Billy Hinsche \ on: September 19, 2023, 11:51:24 PM
I say this with the utmost respect; Billy Hinsche's work and legacy is going the way of Carl Wilson's, which is to say, nowhere. Why not keep Billy's stuff in print, or make it available for streaming, or both? Unless there's some sort of weird protracted fight over his estate or something, they should keep his stuff available in some form. It's just sitting there doing nothing as is.

Yes, Carl and Billy's work survives via the fans and the various Beach Boys releases. But Carl's estate hasn't seemed to do much of anything with his legacy. No photos books, no archival releases.

I don't know that I need to hear solo Billy stuff so much, but his videos on Dennis and Carl, while not so much "documentaries" as they are love letters to the men and their fans, should certainly be made available. Indeed, someone should be going through his archives and putting more stuff out as far as Beach Boys-related stuff.

Carl's extended family clearly has a low-key, hands-off approach to all of this. I understand not wanting to give interviews or do warts-and-all books. But there are things they could be doing that would be nothing but a celebration of the man and his work. Same with Billy.

I hope somebody at some point starts looking at all of this.

I dunno, maybe Billy's estate can work out a deal to sell off his stuff to BRI/Iconic. Same with Carl's stuff for that matter.
Amen! I'm glad I got Here and Now when I could, and the cd's of Carl's solo albums.

BWPS is not the album I celebrate. Smile Sessions IS!
28  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What if Pet Sounds had been a huge success? on: September 19, 2023, 11:47:20 PM
If Pet Sounds had peaked at #50 on the charts, not produced any hit singles, and been generally ignored within the industry, and by the industry I mean the biz, then yes, I could consider it a flop. An album that hits the top ten and produces 4 top 40 singles is hardly a flop. I think some people's expectations for PS were unrealistic. Back in the mid 60s', labels cranked out new albums by their hit artists every few months. Hard to believe, but Yesterday and Today and Revolver were released within weeks of each other in the US. Where the Beach Boys blundered was not having a new album ready within 6 months of Pet Sounds. Capitol gets blamed for putting out that f***in' piece of s*** called Best of the Beach Boys, but they were just doing what record companies do.

I'd be interested to know her thoughts. To tell you the truth I'm not sure what to expect. It seems like every couple of years a book or special about the Comeback gets released, many times with input by Steve Binder. What can be said that hasn't been already said hundreds of times?
I'm also skeptical of the trailer, since it doesn't even use Elvis' voice. Only now I realize that this is the actual trailer and not some fan made video.

BTW do you remember the mentioned "One Night with You" edit of the sit-down-shows? That was really good. I would like a re-release of that. Maybe in a streaming form or whatever would be suitable nowadays. I still have a recording of when it was shown on german TV and absolutely enjoy watching it.

I still have  that special on VHS - I enjoy it more than the actual show. Just Elvis and his buddies, relaxing, playing the old tunes.

Not sure about CD but it's getting a regular black vinyl release this month
I saw the RSD version and passed on it.
31  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Getcha Back Slaps on: July 01, 2023, 11:37:12 PM
Getcha Back is the song that made me a Beach Boys fan. I've told this story here before, but it seems appropriate for this topic. June 1985 I am 17 years old and driving thru my town.  Getcha Back comes on the top 40 radio station and I am blown away. I immediately drive to the Wherehouse and buy the new cassette.  In the next few days I would also go back and purchase All Summer Long.  Later that summer I would pick up the just released update to David Leaf's book and watch the brand new American Band video. I remember seeing the band on MTV at Live Aid and even that early in my fandom thinking how great Brian looked and sounded at that show. That was a pretty good summer to become a Beach Boys fan. And now here we are 38 years later...

Maybe I've been huffing on too much smoke (wildfire or otherwise), but let's be real. Getcha Back is so much fun! I get this song stuck in my head all the time, and I find myself blasting this song and others from their 80s era (It's Gettin Late, Still Cruisin, Maybe I Don't Know, etc) in multiple phases throughout each year. It's such a vibe!!! Though there was a point in my fandom of this band that I stayed away from the somewhat squeakier and digital presentation that Beach Boys 85 posits, I thankfully lost objectivity with The Beach Boys quite some time ago. The compressed sound of the drums and other instrumentation at this point to me feel like a natural progression from Love You. The harmonies and catchy melodies on top of that? Tasty!!

Getcha Back feels like the ultimate expression of it all, and was a successful single to prove just that. Kokomo was more successful I guess, but channels a different vibe.

Do y'all have Getcha Back love or memories or disdain or etc etc to share? How about Maybe I Don't Know? It's Gettin Late? These are some great, hooky, harmony-rich, well-sung tunes. I looooove emulating Mike's turned up to 11 nasal voice in Getcha Back too; I don't know if it'd be the same song without it.

Now She Believes in Love Again is coming on... what a great album. This stuff slaps everyone. Back to my wildfire smoke now...

I love me some 80's Beach Boys, since that's the era i grew up in. ESQ has a great issue out now focusing on the 85 album. Getcha Back, It's Gettin' Late, Maybe I Don't Know, Where I Belong are all favorites of mine.
33  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: John Cowsill Fired on: June 28, 2023, 11:54:28 AM
I sure hope that John gets back with The Cowsills. They just put out a new CD and are still sounding good. The touring bboys band has become a joke.
I'm sure Mike's beach boys will be playing Trump rallies next year.

New drummer for the Beach Boys Tribute Band...he sounds ok, no great shakes either way, especially for what has become a Tribute Band.

Atta boy, Tony! Just another nail in the sad, sad old coffin of Mike Love's, overwith years ago, copy band. It's difficult to realize that anyone in their right mind would waste their time following this ancient junket. While the music is timeless, the performers are pathetically NOT. GIVE IT UP!!!
Tribute bands are a big thing now. Just recently, we had The Guess Who tribute band play in my area. I see Little River Band tribute band is coming soon. We've also got tributes to Firefall, Pure Prairie League, Spin Doctors, Smash Mouth and the Temptations due here soon. Some people never got to see the real groups, so they go see the tribute bands. I never got to see the Beatles in concert, but I've seen Rain, 1964, Yesterday, Creme Tangerine, and Wings 'N' Things. No harm done.

36  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1980's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys on: June 16, 2023, 06:23:26 PM
Man, sans a few songs I really like this album. Getcha Back, It's Getting Late, Where I Belong, Crack At Your Love, Maybe I Don't Know, Male Ego, all really good songs in my book. The dated 80s synths and cheese is actually a really strong point for me! I'm a huge fan of Tears for Fears and New Order especially, so the yamaha DX sounds drowning each song are very enjoyable for me. I never gave it a fair chance because I've always heard it's an awful album. And yeah, theres some songs here I don't really care for (looking at you California Calling and Passing Friend) but it's one of the more enjoyable post-Holland listening experiences I've had.

who is this guy? Should I know him?

That’s Bruce Johnston’s manager, right?
Is he wearing shorts?

I'd like to thank Mr. Watt for reviving interest in the Beach Boys. Saw them in Seattle just a few weeks after this dust up, and Mike said the crowd "looks pretty desirable to me!"

I think a 1973 live box would make more sense this year.
Next year, of course, there will be a 50th anniversary Endless Summer box.
43  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Sam C. Phillips/Sun Records - thread on: May 10, 2023, 08:11:31 PM
In the case of Cash, he wanted to record gospel music, and Sam didn't feel he could sell gospel. Sun was a great place for these guys to start, but of course by moving to the major labels, there were bigger budgets to support them, which meant we got gospel albums from Elvis and John; concept albums like Bitter Tears; Orbison (and later) Presley using orchestras on their records; I think it was all for the best.
44  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Sam C. Phillips/Sun Records - thread on: May 04, 2023, 10:05:31 PM
I'm sad these posts of yours don't get more response, Rocker, but I thank you for them. I really was born at the wrong time, always wanted to be able to make recordings the way they did at Sun.
45  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian AI Project. on: May 04, 2023, 09:58:40 PM
Patiently waiting for AI fix the vocal flub in Soulful Old Man Shunshine...

There's an unflubbed version on the Feel Flows set. Personally I prefer the Endless Harmony version (the vocals are delivered in a different timbre), but I'm sure with proper editing the two can be combined seamlessly.
Give me human vocals, with all their mistakes, over this Al stuff. Give me human hands working the fretboard, drummers dropping their sticks, I mean, people thought Autotune was bad!

46  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Scott Totten and John Cowsill depart Beach Boys band on: April 30, 2023, 02:26:17 PM
John Cowsill was the drummer at the tribute for the Rascals’ Dino Danelli last night at the Cutting Room in NYC. Eddie Brigati sang some numbers and Gene Cornish attended, but apparently Felix Cavaliere was absent.
Are you sure it was Felix that was absent, not Eddie? Felix and Gene have been doing some work together recently. Eddie doesn't want to be a part of it.
47  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Scott Totten and John Cowsill depart Beach Boys band on: April 24, 2023, 01:38:33 PM
Well, that's about the worst thing that could happen to the current touring band.

The band's schedule looks just as full as ever! I think this is more evident that perhaps Scott and John have had enough of the touring life after an outrageously incredible run. I'm also surprised that no one here has reported that Mike and David are appearing at the Chiller Theatre Convention in Parsippany, NJ all this weekend. Bruce is not. To my knowledge, Mike has never done an autograph-show type appearance before, and certainly not with another original Beach Boy. I can't help but wonder (and hope) that perhaps David could become a fixture of the touring band once again? It would certainly add more validity and this would certainly be the time to do it. I also wonder if this is signifying that Mike (and David) are finding ways to stay "touring" without necessarily performing...

This could also be an opportunity for Bruce to (finally) bow out. Hire a music director that actually plays audible/prominent keyboard parts, and let David take on Totten's guitar work with the responsibilities of MD. One could also wonder (and hope) if Brian's recent announcement that he's "busy doing nothing" (strongly implying final touring retirement) has opened communications between Mike and Al about the future. There was lots of footage of the two of them looking chummy backstage at the Grammy Salute. But of all these conspiracy theories swirling in my brain, that one is probably the biggest reach..."The Beach Boys" are booked for three nights leading to 4th of July at the Hollywood Bowl...could be an opportunity to welcome others onstage...

An interesting time for sure.....
Cool Cool Cool
48  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Scott Totten and John Cowsill depart Beach Boys band on: April 23, 2023, 01:31:04 PM
Someone online mentioned they thought this might signify a slowdown for the touring operation.  I suspect it's the opposite.  The tour never stops,  and the only way to take a long break is either a pandemic, or leave the band.  It's why Chicago has rotated in and out like 27 members in recent years.
Someone also said the band has fewer shows scheduled this year, so I suspect it is the start of a slow down. All I know is they are not playing the Puyallup Fair this year; Chicago is the only band on the schedule I would go see.
49  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: R. I. P. Little Richard on: April 23, 2023, 01:28:24 PM
That's a shame. I've never heard Richard say anything about Elvis that wasn't positive. And it never seemed that he saw him as some kind of "rival" in that sense. It's bad that so many times people have to create a situation that was not there. One needs only to look on the many interviews on youtube that Richard gave.

Yes, he said many, many times what an electrifying performer Elvis was; he called Elvis his friend.
50  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Tidbit on the Televised Beach Boys Tribute Concert on: April 17, 2023, 09:44:44 PM
The 25th Anniversary show is pretty much "Mystery Science Theater 3000" fodder at this stage. At the time, I think it was cool/interesting to see and hear the new song at the end. And Carl offers a truly earnest and heartfelt "Heaven" dedicated to Dennis. The cheesy show frankly didn't deserve the class Carl brought to it.

But everything looks and sounds awful at that show, save a few numbers. They pre-recorded most of the audio (see the Gary Usher diaries book for the story on that), and while that negated them actually biffing the songs, they very much sound like they were recorded in a TV dub studio.

Even most the guest spots were kinda awful. Two Dog Night was okay I guess. Everybody always cites Ray Charles, and I can't fault his performance, but frankly I would have been fine with Carl (or god forbid they called up Blondie) singing it. Glen Campbell seemed to be on something at the show and they actually left in the part where he sings the lyrics to the wrong song.

But it's highly entertaining as cheese. Brian squinting to read the lines without glasses. I've always loved Mike's randomly blurting out "Don Ho, what are YOU doing here?" during the end of the show. The truly awful editing, including not even showing the guys in the order they got off the stupid boat for their leis at the beginning of the concert.

There are actually some network like interstitials that the guys taped that I don't think even made it on the Japanese laserdisc, including Brian lifting weights.

As we learned from the Gary Usher book, the 25th show seems to have helmed by an old fashioned, cranky, demanding network variety show producer who yelled and demanded everything yesterday. You can imagine how *that* guy enjoyed dealing with Landy.
There's just no pleasing some people. It's the Beach Boys, it's prime time tv in 1987. I was just happy ABC gave 90 minutes to our guys on a Friday night.
I don't remember Glen singing the wrong song; he did mess up the words on I Get Around, though. "Now none of the guys go steady, no, no, because it wouldn't be right to leave her alone on a Saturday night"...or something like that.
