Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Beach Boys Being Funny

I was watching and listening to "The Lost Concert", and during "Long Tall Texan" Brian keeps turning to Carl and Al every time Mike says the titular lyric and appears to make fun of him (or the Long Tall Texan character). You can't really make out what he's saying, except at 4:30 I think he says "He likes his job", which I think is a very funny line compared to the punny humor they usually showcase. This link should start the video at the start of the song: https://youtu.be/bGp1a4O29oI?t=3m4s Anyway, this got me thinking about the possibility of other genuinely funny jokes the boys have made. If you know any, please share.

Thanks Orange. I'm always a fan of a dynamic song with multiple parts. I would have done it if I had thought of it. I wasn't planning on trying to write anything for a while. It was a spontaneous recording I just decided to make it real short. It's about the same length as "Had to Phone Ya" I was listening to that song a lot at the time; I think it inspired the length. Thanks for always commenting.

You're right, it shouldn't be a stand alone instrumental. I'll try to get to the vocals some time. I technically play everything, but I do a lot of looping and splicing together of separate takes, so I'm cheating a little. I'm actually physically playing the Concertina, Acoustic Guitar, Tambourine, and Autoharp. The rest is synthesized on my MIDI keyboard. I'm glad we have this little board to show this stuff... I'm a fan of Zach, Orange, Michael Leroy, Joel, etc.... Those guys sound like professionals, I think it's clear that I'm a hobbyist, and sound like one. I really appreciate the comments. Thank you!

Thank you. I have a melody for it, but I just didn't feel like singing. This is an old project that I dug up to practice mixing, and to see if I could jam more instruments in. You're right about the variation. I tried to build the first verse to the second verse then the third verse cuts the accordion and adds horns, on the second time around after the chorus there are violins, but that's the only difference, on the pre-chorus there's an autoharp, and the fade has an added trumpet part. So there are a few minor changes in the instrumentation, and one musical change, but the two halves of the song are pretty much identical. I have a few ideas for things to add in certain parts and I do plan on adding vocals at some point. Thank you for the feedback!

I enjoy the Smiley Smile originals on this board, and I've been slowing down my production pace recently. Maybe if I post some projects regularly I will feel the incentive to continue working on new things. So to quote Mikey Love, "...to my dying fire, I think I'll add a log." 1. No Title 2. Thank Him 3. Words of Love 4. Don't Take Him Seriously 5. That's Not Me (Backing Track)

Thank you very much. After taking these to a few professionals and having to listen to it with them, it became apparent that there is too much repeating in the music and that these should all be cut down. So hopefully I'll have them all cut down and updated to be under 2 minutes within a week. Thank you everybody for helping me out.

Thank you for the feedback. I used the concertina to sound like a steam train chugging along, I never used it to play notes, so I'll just call it a sound effect. You're right, the trumpets and strings are synthesized, so I'll change the original post. I considered doing one about cars, but decided to leave it as a trilogy. If I choose to continue with this theme, cars will be next. Thanks again

Hello, I'm under 20 and still deciding what I want to do in life and over the past year I've been going back and forth between interests, but recently I've come back to Pro Tools and audio in general. I had an idea for a project and decided to finish it to see where I'm at and hopefully get some advice. The idea was to try and make themes using music and sound effects that are based on different subjects. As I went, each one got a little further away from it's original subject matter, but I am comfortable saying that each one is at least inspired by Trains, Planes, and Boats. It was all recorded in Pro Tools, I play all the instruments besides the clip of "12th Street Rag" on the one titled "Boats", some of the sound effects I did myself, and the other ones I found online. If you don't have time to listen and respond to each one of them, I would hope you make sure to listen to "Boats"; that is the one that came the closest to what I wanted, in terms of a combination of music and sound effects. Please tell me what you think! This board has always been very nice, but I need a bit of the truth. I appreciate any feedback and I hope for a few responses. I'm just starting out and I'm looking for all the feedback I can get, particularly about mixing. If you have something to say about the volume, panning or EQ on these, I'd love to hear it. Also, I know I'm not a very talented musician so whenever you think something sounds really bad let me know. Another thing I make important to myself is staying on tempo... if you notice anything offbeat say something please, so I can spare further embarrassment. Thank you, Thank you

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / I Need SS.net's Help Finishing a Song - Melody, Bass, Drums
|

As much I'd like to think I am Brian Wilson, I am not. I can't figure out this song for the life of me. It's a very simple 2 minute song in C, Verse/Chorus/Verse/Fade. The verse goes C G F G, and the chorus goes C F Am G Bdim. If you guys would help me out with the following, I would really appreciate it... Melody - Anything you've got. Bass - I'm not the one for inventing a great bass line. This part could be fun. Drums - Not much of a percussionist, but as a Beach Boys fan I like it simple. There's a timpani on the fade. Feel free to experiment. If it's useful, the song is 95bpm. This would be a great help and all that I NEED, but since I'm asking this much, here are few things that would be the icing on the cake... Lyrics - I can't stand my own lyrics. Lead Vocals - I don't like my voice. I can hit the notes, but it sounds so dreary; this song sounds to me like it should have a little more pep. Backing Vocal Arrangement on Verse - If you think it needs it. As long as you don't over do it. Of course any tips, ideas, and critiques you guys have for me would be appreciated. Faster, slower, "needs this...", "needs that...", whatever. The current arrangement is.. Upright Piano Autoharp Clickety-clack Acoustic Guitar Organ Timpani Trumpets Anyway, I hope you can help.
