I think the whole thing is amazing. A lot of very creative decisions have been made throughout, and I love some of the new backing vocals. On just two listens nothing about it annoys me, except perhaps the strings in Surf's Up which sound a little weedy, and the French Horn tag at the end of same which is just silly, and breaks the mood somewhat. Overall a stunning effort.

I listened fairly closely and I truly can't detect any autotune here. Mike has a voice where autotune is fairly noticeable(see his solo work...) and none of that seems to be apparent here. That being said, this might be the best performance of the 'Car Medley' I've heard. Brian on second verse. Unmistakeable, I think.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Beach Boy duets?

Hi All,
Have just been trying to add up on the fingers of one hand the number of two-part harmony songs the Beach Boys recorded and released - that is, either one BB doubling himself in 2 prt, or two BBs in 2 part without group bgvox.
So far my list is as follows:
Surfer Moon
A pretty short list so far... Any further examples you can think of?

If you don’t have it-his book is very entertaining
I see on his Wikipedia page that many of his recollections in that book were later challenged by other participants, including Ken Scott in his own autobiography. They sound like two fun reads - I'll have to seek them out! His book is a must read...But in all fairness, anyone in the entertainment business including the tech people like Geoff and Ken could have that listed on a "Wikipedia" page about having info challenged by other participants. Par for the course. Indeed, Emerick's contributions were very important, and his book is definitely a good read if you're a Beatles fan. My only reservation with it is the degree to which he seems consider himself the '5th Beatle', but I don't want to bad mouth the guys as he was clearly great.

I posted this on the Desper Thread in Honoured Guests, but I'll post it here too:
Mr Desper,
I'm very sorry to hear that you've had to close down your study video pages, what a shame. Sadly, the world is full of idiots, and one just has to accept that it always will be. I hope you won't take to heart the stupid comments, and rest assured that the vast majority of us here do read your comments thoroughly, don't make stupid interpretations, and do really value your wisdom and the efforts you've put in to share the music of the Beach Boys.
I hope one day the time will again be right for you to put your excellent site back online so together we can continue the wonderful musical odyssey that is appreciation of the Beach Boys.
Best wishes,
Brother John

Wow! An outstanding effort! Thank you so much for all your hard work and for sharing. And for all the notes you've included with disc 1.
I haven't listened to the whole yet, but dipping in, I think what you did with Child Is Father (With Fly-Ins & A Cappella Outro) is very clever, though I'm personally not sure about the water fly-ins, they may grow on me, and how you got the a capella version of Surf's Up I can't imagine (though I did hear some of Brian's falsetto from the piano demo - nice!).
Brilliant stuff! And the sound is also amazing throughout!

I don't believe I've logged onto this message board in literally over ten years...
and I've come all the way back so I could find this thread and ask if anyone else is bothered that the piano in this stereo mix doesn't fade for the last measure of the intro like it does in the mono mix.
I'll post again in 2028. Be good, everyone; glad you're all well.
You are absolutely right. Better with the fade.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Comparing The Top Artists, Past And Present, By Vocal Range

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/05/20/top-artists-vocal-range_n_5357698.htmlInteresting analysis of pop vocal ranges. Curiously, according to this Brian Wilson has a narrower vocal range than David Bowie (RIP), Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Bono and Tom Waits, among others. But wider than Justin Bieber. Discuss.

Yes, a lot of stuff (most modern stuff) is mastered too loudly. More modern BB stuff hasn't been heinously over-done in this regard, but definitely has been mastered more loudly.
I'm relatively okay with the EQ decisions on modern remasterings of original BB mixes.
It's the remixes that have often been rather disappointing for me. WAAAAAY too much reverb.
For some reason some folks here have a thing against Steve Hoffman (and/or his work), but the BB stuff he's mastered is the go-to mastering for me in many cases. I'm still planning on getting the Kevin Gray SACDs of BB albums (VERY surprised they haven't been discussed here more; but then again I haven't gotten around to buying them yet so I can't complain too much!), and I suspect they'll be go-to masterings as well.
Interesting - I personally *don't* think recent releases of the BB stuff has suffered from too much compression, I know what over-zealous limiting sounds like and no way has the BB catalogue been exposed to that. In terms of EQ, actually I do find on some occasions that Mark Linett's mixes have a *little* too much top end, just *too* trebley sometimes. And as regards there being too much reverb, unless we here otherwise from the people who actually made the new mixes, I believe that the amount of reverb on new mixes is no different from the old ones, but is just a lot more audible because it is allowed to bounce about in a less-cluttered stereo image rather than being folded into the density of a mono mix.
