Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Reviewing Adult/Child as an actual Beach Boys album

Bumped this thread just to say that, every once in a while, I just get in this mood where I truly believe ADULT CHILD to be AMAZING! Mama's little baby loves shortnin, shortnin...
Mate, I feel like that nearly all the time. In the BW Songwriter documentary (which I looooove) the talking heads talk about what might have been with this album, how it was Brian evolving naturally from his Love You phase and developing his new creative voice. I couldn't agree more. There are four albums I just can't hear enough (see my signature) and this one is constantly on for me.....

When reading 'The Wilson Project', Usher talks about Landys tinkering and the lyric sheets that Brian would come in with, Usher says that he could tell Landys work a mile off from Brians. So I think it's fair to say that Landy *tried* to write with Brian. With the control he had at this time I find it hard to believe that he allowed *none* of his ideas or lyrics to be recorded and released. So, I'm pretty sure he's responsible for some of Brian's output at that time. **
Legally, you're right and I hadn't really thought of that. I think the truth is that the only person who know how much Landy contributed is Landy himself (and maybe Brian at times....if he can remember) and so that is lost forever. As you say, Landy agreed to have his name removed (possibly under duress though) so maybe it is right that that's how it stays
** I may be wrong on this, it's a while since I read it but I think it goes along those lines

May I just say. This whole debate is really interesting, I've enjoyed reading it (a bit like a soap opera at times, wait, I hate soap operas)
I guess I would say that a lot of shitty people make music, if we judged everyone by moral standards as far as credits go then some albums wouldn't have been written by anyone. I agree that Landy's estate shouldn't make any money off royalties etc. but I do feel historically IF Landy contributed (a big IF in some cases) then his name should be there, for better or worse. As for people unaware of the stories thinking he was a great writer then that doesn't overally wash with me these days. With current technology anyone interested enough in a song or to form an opinion on someone would turn to Google and Wikipedia to find out more, it wouldn't take long for the penny to drop....
For me, being a shitty person is not a reason to lose credit; using illegal coercion to gain the credit in the first place is a reason to lose credit. I agree that in some cases that is the situation but we must also concede that Landy/Morgan did write *some* of the lyrics and/or music that Brian produced in those years. Where they wrote there should be credit; where the name was just 'tagged on' for royalties etc. then there should not.

Six months later and I'm still beyond disappointed. I really wanted to like the record. Sadly it has taken a place among the worst the band as a group or solo has to offer. I never thought I'd say that twice about a Brian record.
Can't agree with that while GIOMH still exists. Granted that was largely composed of either remakes or tracks of some antiquity, but then NPP isn't 100% new either and is infinitely preferable. If pushed, I'd rank Brian's solo studio outings thusly: 1 TLOS2 OCA3 BWRG4 NPP5 Brian Wilson6 ITKOD7 Imagination8 IJWMFTT9 WIRWFC10 GIOMHThe #1 here is some way ahead of the pack, just as #10 lags badly. The rest are closely grouped. To my mind, BWPS is a very, very special case and stands somewhat apart from his main canon. #1 in a listing of its own. Geez, AGD, didn't recognise it was you with the change of avatar! I agree on the BWPS point and my ranking is as thus 1. TLOS 2. IJWMFTT 3. Imagination 4. OCA 5. BW 6. NPP 7. BWRG 8. WIRWFC 9. ITKOD 100. GIOMH 1 and 2 are way way above the rest (although IJWMFTT is very much a compilation, albeit a re-recorded one)

Ooh, I have a few of these...
How about Aloe Blacc? 'I need a dollar' was a massive hit but if you listen to his album and guest spots....he's very good....
Athlete's 'Wires' was big a while ago but again, if you like a good MOR Ballad (and we're all Beach Boys fans here....am I right?) then they have a couple of very enjoyable albums
A weird one but for those who like 'comedy albums' then The Amateur Transplants had a viral hit with 'London Underground' and it put me on to them, love it. They have a Christmas Album that no holiday season should be without.
Flobots 'Handlebars' was a top 20 hit in 2008, their stuff is insanely good.
Just Jack's commercial hit 'Starz in their eyes' soundtracked the summer of 2007 for many, he has 3 albums with some superb tracks on
The year before, The Kooks and 'Naive' blew up....the latest album 'Listen' is an absolute stonker and worth repeated listens....
I'm not too sure if he counts but Lupe Fiasco hit the top 5 in 2008 with 'Superstar' and he is absolutely one of my favourite hip-hop artists

I assume the same deleted scenes from the US version will be on the UK version... right? I would assume the same, can't see the point in having different deleted scenes for different regions. More work for very little benefit....
But if they wanted to make more $$, because they'd sell twice as many copies as fans would have to buy both versions
Maybe.......I'm not sure how many people would buy that or just get someone in that region to upload (sshhhhhhh)

I am not a Landy apologist by any means and still I feel he should be properly credited for the work he did on BW88, in the interest of historical accuracy if you will. He played a big role in Brian's life around the time and I find it wrong to pretend he had nothing to do with the creative process around the time. Also, much like Love You, BW88 is an album mostly appreciated by hardcore fans and among these everyone's familiar with the full story anyway, all the more since the recent biopic.
I agree with this. Even if the people are struck off financial benefits from royalties etc. The name of the actual writers should be accredited to songs they worked on in my opinion....
