You lost me when you put Friends in the D list
It's a good album - I certainly toyed with it going into the C List, POB would make way and it was a close call. Thats what I quite liked about this game, limiting to 5 albums per category makes you make some tough decisions. Have a go....

Hi moderators, I'm guessing this is covered somewhere, but I've been unable to find it: how can I insert an image in a post? I see the "Insert Image" button, but what do I put between the tags?
Hey, I'm not a mod but can help you here. It's a bit of a faff but you first need to upload the image to a file host site (free and simple) http://postimage.org/ Is a simple and easy one. That will give you a URL designed for forums, you can choose your size etc and the tags are often included. Hope this helps.

According to All Music, I just noticed that That Lucky Old Sun scores a 2.5.
So, I'll definitely add that one to the desert island list.
I second taking TLOS over any of those. If not....Holland probably, but even then that's because I don't like it after a few listens, but I reckon if I devoted some time to it I would enjoy more of it...

I'm currently working on a beach boys compilation/box set kinda thing to bore very kind people in my life senseless for a while. I'm struggling to fit the TWGMTR in. Here's the current roster.
20 Tracks per compilation disc.
Disc 1 - Early Surf Years
1. Dance, Dance, Dance 2. Help me Rhonda 3. California Girls 4. Fun, Fun, Fun 5. When I grow up (to be man) 6. Little Deuce Coup 7. I Get Around 8. Little Honda 9. The Warmth of the Sun 10. Don't Worry Baby 11. You're so good to me 12. Stoked 13. Surfin' 14. Surfin' Safari 15. A Young man is gone 16. Kiss Me, Baby 17. Surfer Girl 18. In My Room 19. I'm Bugged at my 'ol man 20. Please let me wonder
Disc 2 - Pet Sounds / Pet Sounds Live
Full Albums
Disc 3 - The SMiLE Sessions / BWPS
Full Albums
Disc 4 - (struggling for a title for this disc but it's basically SS - 15BO)
1. Meant for You 2. Sail On, Sailor 3. Wild Honey 4. Here Comes the Night 5. Darlin' 6. Do It Again 7. I Can Hear Music, 8. This Whole World 9. Add Some Music to your Day 10. Tears in the Morning 11. Little Bird 12. Be Still 13. Disney Girls 14. 'Til I Die 15. Break Away 16. That Same Song 17. Take a Load off Your Feet 18.I'd Love Just Once to See You 19. All This is That 20. Their Hearts we're full of Spring
Disc 5 - Love You - Adult/Child
Full Albums
Disc 6 - Here's the problem. I really don't like anything here enough to play to someone else as an example of why I love this band. I really like TWGMTR but where does it fit? What would it take the place of on Disc 4 if I squeezed some on and I'm uncomfortable putting it before Love You in the chronology.
Disc 7 - Brian Wilson Solo
1. Concert Tonight 2. This Beautiful Day 3. Love and Mercy 4. Midnight's Another Day 5. That Lucky Old Sun 6. This Songs Gonna Sleep with you 7. Forever She'll be my Surfer Girl 8. Your Imagination 9. Orange Crate Art 10. Lay Down Burden 11. It's not easy bein' me 12. The Right Time 13. Saturday Morning in the City 14. He couldn't get his poor old body to move 15. Water Builds Up 16. Slightly American Music 17. I'm Broke 18. Too Much Sugar 19. Smart Girls 20. Rio Grande
Answers on a post card to the usual address.

Probably not the place to post this…
THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THE BEACH BOYS:
Brian and Mike writing songs that distil a generation and a moment in time, the crazily efficient and intense output of the early era. The story of family and relationships at the start.
Brian conceiving THAT change in cultural shift and being so open as to explore it at the forefront. Just thinking about Pet Sounds or SMiLE could blow your mind. Rejected and a failure on release (or not) only to be widely lauded as some of the greatest works of 20th century popular music and ahead of their time.
Brian saying 'f*** it' and the boys carrying on. Pulling together as a team to produce some amazing songs that stand on their own. Trying to re-work SMiLE, trying to keep it all together amongst dwindling sales
Love You, Adult/Child where Brian just wrote anything, the crazy ideas and feelings in those albums
The C50 Tour and TWGMTR - having everyone back together and cashing in on a massive tour to keep fans happy and writing some very decent tunes
Brian crazy solo stuff, Sweet Insanity et al
WHAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT THE BEACH BOYS
Post Love You to reunion….to be honest when Mike took over, Baywatch and Still Crusin' stuff just makes me cringe and kinda embarrassed
Mike's stage image and general personality, ever.
Brian's boring MOR tracks that feel phoned in and overproduced.
Legal squabbles
I guess what I'm saying is this: I don't hate Mike Love. I can see his influence in the early days and the songwriting partnership from the early 60's. No Mike = No Beach Boys (literally and legally). But I guess the high point for my enjoyment of the bands music and story seem to revolve around Brian being kind of unleashed and creative. It's like a classic story of creative vs commercial and I'm always going to fall on the side of creative, personally. Especially when pretty much everyone involved is a multi-millionaire.
As for Mr Love. He's very easy to poke fun at and he makes it very hard to like him sometimes. I hold everyone up to ridicule and can laugh at some of Brian's creative efforts and quotes, I guess everyone is just a person at the end of the day and I hold no-one ill will.
But it's still good to take the piss sometimes….

I'm not offended by the content of this song or the comedy sketch that was posted a week or so ago, I'm offended at the poor quality and total lack of humor involved. Even the biggest fans of Mike Love must admit the guy is an easy target given the interviews and personal conduct he has exhibited over the past five decades, but these attempts at humor are equally as unfunny as the "Barbara Ann" parody we were subjected to recently.
If the Mike haters truly believe this is high comedy, I have to question their taste.
I know it's all opinion and such but I can't understand anyone not finding that 'the special' sketch funny. Ripped me apart.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Tell YOUR Story. What was THE BEST Beach Boys related concert YOU Ever Attended
|
on: October 22, 2015, 04:59:09 PM

I get to start...well...just 'cause... There have been a bunch of really, Really GREAT shows. Getting to MC several over the years in and around Toronto, circa '83-'93, was a HUGE thrill...but they don't qualify. It ain't all about me. The early 70s show where I accompanied Carl back to their Toronto lodgings for lunch and a chat was a GIGANTIC thrill. I'll never-ever forget it. THE highlight of my young life...by light years. The box-set tour in the early 90s [because the venues were so SMALL and intimate that they could actually hear one another sing and as such the level of the performances were elevated BIG TIME] in Toronto's accoustically perfect Massey Hall ranks right up there...almost at the very top. It is certainly the 2nd best concert I've ever been lucky enough to attend. But there is one more that stands head and shoulders beyond the rest. It will likely be the pinnacle for what's left of the rest of my life. [Granted I did NOT get to attend a 50th Anniversary concert...so my view-point is, at the very least, incomplete.] No...for me the head and shoulders winner was the Smile [BWPS] concert at the previously mentioned, accoustically perfect Massey Hall in Toronto. It was the concert that was NEVER-EVER going to happen. Not a snowball's chance in hades that THAT would even BECOME a possibility. ZERO likelihood. A pipe dream. Forget it. Yet, On October 6, 2004...I arrived at Massey Hall to pick up *MY* tickets for the concert that would NEVER occur. I had ordered them on-line. Decent seats. But for SOME inexplicable reason they were just not available when I arrived at the will-call window. Really?!?!?!? Some glitch in 'the machine' had robbed me of my seating. Oh "sh*t-on-a-stick"!!! Don't panic. How will THIS 'screw-up play out? ... ... ... Like 'Monopoly'. "Bank error in your favour" Collect 2 FRONT ROW CENTRE seats...do not pass go...do not collect 200 dollars. As they sang on 15 Big-Uns...'It's OK'. OK? Freekin' JACK POT!!! Now...I am on the edge of my [front row] seat because I know THIS is going to be beyond my wildest expectations. I had only recetly discovered that there was a Beach Boys/Brian Wilson Message board. It was printed on the back of his 'Imagination' cd which I'd purchased when it was released. I quickly had discovered two things. 1. The Blue-board...and then 2. 'Smile' was going to be completed, released and toured!!! My Gawd!!! Pinch me. Oh YA!! I'd died and gone to heaven. There are other people who love the Beach Boys and Brian?...They 'chat' about it ON-LINE? And SMiLE is HAPPENING??? Pinch me again...Am I dreaming? But no...I wasn't. I got to bear witness with eyes, ears and other human witnesses to the concert of a lifetime. Man...I was pulling for Brian. I wanted him to knock one so far out of the park that it would never land. I wanted HIM to feel better about the whole 'thing' than anyone there...including me. He/They most certainly did Clobber that 'sucker'...and then some. Almost 11 years later and the ball is still sailing...showing no signs that gravity even exists. And so it began... ... ... 1.And Your Dream Comes True 2.Surfer Girl 3.Wendy 4.Add Some Music to Your Day ...at this point I started to CRY...Hence the 'name' Add Some. Cry? What a 'suck'. 5.Good to My Baby 6.Please Let Me Wonder 7.Drive-In ...I couldn't believe they added this old 'baby' into the mix. GREAT surprise. 8.Good Timin' 9.You're Welcome ...I sure was. That marked the end of the accoustic intro to the festivities. It was FANTASTIC. Wonderful way to present...and to begin. Then... 10.Sloop John B 11.Hawaii 12.Desert Drive 13.California Girls 14.Your Imagination 15.Gettin' In Over My Head 16.God Only Knows 17.Don't Worry Baby 18.Forever 19.Soul Searchin' 20.Sail On, Sailor 21.Marcella Now how the heck do you BEAT THAT??? We knew. And this was only the intermission? Pinch me again. [twice] Then came the magic. Brian Wilson and his Band of Excellence delivered perfection. And I was front row centre with my wife??? Pinch me. When they got to 'Vegetables' we hauled out a bunch of well done 'fake' veggies. Carrots. Tomatoes. Green Peppers. etc and got the folks sitting on either side of us to join us in holding these props skyward. Taylor Mills saw it and nudged the guys on either side of her to check it out. They all laughed and we all felt great. A possitive connection. Pinch me. It was just a blessing...pure and simple. I wanted Brian to know...to get...to completely understand HOW MUCH this meant to 'us'...how much HE meant to 'us'...how important this moment was for ALL of us...including him. I hope he did. I hope he KNEW that we weren't just cheering and yelling and stomping and clapping for an encore...which he and the gang dutifully delivered. [twice] Encore: 39.Do It Again 40.I Get Around 41.Help Me, Rhonda 42.Barbara Ann 43.Surfin' U.S.A. 44.Fun, Fun, Fun Much more well deserved fanaticism...and then... Encore 2: 45.Love and Mercy THAT'S it. The BEST Beach Boys related concert I ever attended. And all I had to do was show up. Brian, et al, did ALL the rest. That was flippin' beautifully written......brought a tear to my eye....nice one.

Hi all,
It is fall. The leaves on the trees are turning various colors. In the Binghamton, NY area, where I live the fall foliage is great. In Tioga and Tompkins Counties the trees aren't that great. How are the leaves where all of you live?
Sheffield, UK here. Ooh, it's lovely this year! Loads of crunchy and very yellow leaves. I've just moved house onto a very 'leafy' street, they're everywhere...it's beautiful.

Can someone show us Brian's facebook post? I am not on that. In a recent interview, questioned about any future work with the BB (link below), Brian says "no, not so far" about any plan to work together again--not absolute rejection. They do not have to reunite for a major tour or even album, but what a nice incentive it would be for Dave if they planned a special show all together when he's better. mc-interviewing-brian-wilson-beach-boys-founder-coming-to-eastons-state-theatre-still-finds-inspiration-20151016-column.html Everyone (more or less) at the show last night was from the area, and the show had a real South Bay "high-school-dance" feel. It was a stone's throw from where the Boys grew up--right in their back yard as it were. Phil asked the crowd to say a prayer for Dave, and a shout of love and joy rose up. I hope the next time he starts the rhythm on Do it Again it is with all his original band mates around him. As for the promotion of the show, not to be unkind to the nice fellow there , who was distraught and worried about Dave and is evidently a great friend of the band and the BB, but something was off. A "jersey boys" tribute band was also supposed to play, and the crowd shouted about that during the promoter's intro comments, and he said "they rescheduled," indicating another layer of chaos and confusion--some failure of communication that led to low ticket sales. I saw Brian and Mike's fb posts on this, hopefully Dave makes a quick recovery.
Last night I found out that David Marks was in the hospital. Let's send David our prayers and wish him a speedy recovery! – Brian
