Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Why are the Beatles the one band people don't allow you to dislike?

let's see...the crapples...er,uh, i mean the beatles, had the entire establishment focused on them (either because they were corrupting the youth of because they were amazing geniuses, either way constant coverage) and had and have nearly endless press (every week since i have been alive one or more beatles are on a magazine cover ) saying matter-of-factly they are the greatest band ever (i mean, love me do, who can beat that?) so the debate is settled. if you don't like them you are obviously wrong, just ask all the aging boomers who have been patting themselves on the back for the last 40years for ending the war, man. they know what's up (note: eternal wars are now good and just let them explain why that is) ! sure they were the wealthiest generation ever, and the first to leave their children worse off than themselves, but the beatles! they win, you lose. just ask Jan warner.

Finally had lunch with Sandy AND Michael Fennelly from the Millenium. Really nice guys. Sandy is as tiny as Al Jardine and has a very casual, nice-guy vibe, whereas Mike seems a little more pissed about the Music biz, but still a very friendly man. Sandy told me he got to be at a mixing session for Good Vibes, but I didn't press him too much about exactly what it was like. Michael had a funny story about Mike Love being a dick and stepping in some dogshit circa 1968. Anyway, I'll post some pictures as soon as I remember how! Off to work....

Gotta say I prefer almost any post-98 Brian vocal to that. Painful (if spirited). I actually think that's the best performance i've heard from Brian in a while, didn't know he could sing that song that good, maybe the coolest thing i've heard from Brian since the 80's era. On the Paley songs, with a couple of exceptions, Brian sounds like someone trapped in a mental ward. I can't think of any exceptions!

Whoa, didn't think I'd find many Misfits fans around these parts. It's interesting, though, in that the '85 mixes were Glenn's work where as the originals were not (while probably having his input), which is kind of the opposite situation.
There are a couple cool things I like about his mix/additions (particularly the harmony vocal on "Static Age"), but overall, yeesh. I really don't care for them, the super-reverbed mixes are very ill-fitting for most of those songs. I think he was just into that sort of production and mixing style at the time. Sounds great on November-Coming-Fire, but here? I can't get into it.
The Misfits were a natural progression from the BB for my pre-teen to Teen self (in the 80's). Very catchy mid-tempo pop-songs with monster-movie lyrics?! Perfect. I actually have a soft spot for Legacy of Brutality because I had that cassette in high school! Static Age (as an album) now sounds "90s" to me! ha

Dennis' hand injury, which forced changes to the band in a number of ways and pushed him away from the core creative direction; ... I don't think WIBNTLA solves any of that, but some FM success might have left the band more positively disposed to Dennis' work.
I always felt that Dennis gained some creative control when he hurt his hand. Like once he wasn't stuck behind the drums he could express himself at the piano, or he could stand up front and just sing with the guys, and even Mike thought his songs were beautiful, so I always imagined it was Dennis that kept his own songs off the records. But, yeah, a hit would've been amazing!

At this point, it's hard to see a workable solution emerging any time soon in Egypt.
There's a fairly easy one as far as I can tell. Restore the democratically elected government which, as problematic as they were, were not arbitrarily killing citizens in self-proclaimed "crackdowns," and were adhering to constitutional principles rather than suspending the constitution. Hold them accountable through things like public protests which actually worked with this government. With Morsi public protests actually had an effect. With the military regime that it is now, it resulted in mass human rights violations and illegal detentions. Seems to me the choice is simple and if we actually cared about the people of Egypt, we would do best to focus on the realities. Pretending as if the central problem in Egypt are the victims of illegal totalitarianism will get us nowhere and can only perpetuate the central problems that have plagued Egyptians for decades. Wow. You actually believe what you're saying, don't you?! And you say I live in fantasy land! Is it really that hard for you to look around and see that none, i mean NONE, of the things you claimed as a solution are even slightly possible, even here in the crappy old USA, where your government just passed a law that makes it illegal to protest ( http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lee-camp/anti-occupy-law-passes-nea_b_1343728.html? But hey, just be vigilant, or, uh, vote for someone else, or get the right law passed. Get a grip! Time for some new ideas rather than all this 'democracy is somehow always good, you just wait and see' schtick which makes no sense. Why tow the line for the staus quo?

FAIL! Are you saying nobody would help anyone else if the government didn't make them?! The government doesn't make anyone do it. If the people have a problem with it, they have the power to change it. But, no, that's not what I'm saying. But if you are going to suggest that the government is the direct cause of lost lives, then I can counter that they are the direct cause of lives being saved. Since the government can only use force to do anything (including 'good' things) it IS ALWAYS BAD. Totalitarian governments not democratic ones. Remember, the government is made of people. Obvious, but important. By your logic, only these amazing people in government have any desire to help anyone and, shucks, nobody will voluntarily give them their money, so they are just gonna have to take your money and do something good for you, because you (who is also a person) are incapable of choosing how best to use your limited resources. What a joke!
When you are ready to exit fantasy land and actually have a discussion like a grown up, let me know. Yeah, I'll make sure to keep you posted.
