26  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BB in UK --- No reviews !?! on: June 19, 2018, 11:29:23 AM
Thanks Shady. Glad you enjoyed it

. To guitarfool.....well, again, more my way of registering disappointment., not really a question.  I do actually admire immensely both Brians band and the current BB. As they made me a fan of harmony vocals, at least both  bands are still doing this very well and the original guys benefit from the talents of Darian , Scott T et al in keeping the sound alive.

Yeah, I cant disagree..........but remain, Yours Sincerely, Disappointed.

Been searching, cant find any reviews from Hampton Court. Did find GV on youtube, with Christian sounding ok. Are the guys losing traditional fans....and will their Royal Phil fans buy tickets to make up the difference ? Enthusiasm, anyone ??

Well, this is a curious album and no mistake. Where it excels -- Sloop John B, Disney Girls, You Still Believe in Me...........there , it justifies its existence.

Some of the arrangements are both too quiet and lacking much creativity.

Plain bad....is the unforgiveable burying of BWs brilliant vocal tags...especially the ending of God Only Knows.

If only, if only.........the excellence of Sloop etc had been shown throughout, the album could have been a GREAT addition to the catalogue.

Heard F, F, F this morning on radio. Glad the band are being heard and at least this album might get new buyers and kead to ither new or archive releases. BUT.........the orch adds nothing that my ears  tell me " must buy". Just the opposite !

Okay, okay, so it is a big and well respected orchestra ; but it is ultimately no more than a " tribute band" .

I trust Howie's judgement. Hopefully, his powers of persuasion can extract these gems. from the vaults onto sale

I would like them to take a full CD shot in the studio....which might or might not be the last CD of new stuff.

Maybe a hologram costs less than paying your former colleagues

Perhaps the plan  all along was for surgery after May gigs .....and recovery through June , as no gigs were showing then ?  Possibly BW's back caused more urgent surgery and intervention. IMO

Sounds like more of the BW Band are on there, singing. Brian not too obvious. Like it though !

Re Steohen Despers comments on Papa Doo Run Run 's California Project -- that is where Jeff Foskett did a cracking version of Warmth of the Sun

I very much enjoy singing collaborations, great fun and inspiring. But as a 'record collector'......no. Not my cup of tea and rarely played more than a few times.

Looks like £62 to stand for 3 hours.

Yes he was and no he isn't
42  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 'Beach Baby' by First Class and Endless Summer Concurrent Chart Runs on: April 05, 2018, 01:56:30 AM
It might help this discussion if you realise Tony Burrows was a session singer. He had been in the Kestrels vocal group  in the early 60s with the guys who became David and Jonathan. Later he joined the Ivy !eague......even one listen to them gives you the BB influence and respect. The writers behind the Ivy League wrote for First Class and Tony--plus John Carter-- were in First Class.

The basic element tbroughout is harmony. Secondly, attempts at "pop success".

I found their stuff derivative and lightweight.
Of them all, Ivy League were the best writers and singers....but a trio....so, they lacked a bass voice and always seem incomplete to me.

Run, don't walk, to see Brian and his band while you can. And certainly, the current BB  line up are worth seeing/ hearing........... ; it will change, too , in time.

Underrated. Very.

Just checked them out on tbeir site. Ok,...but.the keyboard guy sings Brians parts.......so, how come the bass vocalist is suddenly on the high parts in the next tune?  They seem  reasonable....but, really, "tribute" = "theft" of intellectual property, image and artistry. Increasingly, I find this approach stifling new works and new ideas.
47  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New bass player with Mike & Bruce on: March 25, 2018, 03:08:10 PM
The original Four Seasons gave one of the best live perfomances I ever saw. The dancing version is bland, sorry, but that is my opinion. Designed for Broadway or UK West End stages ....not rock nor concert venues

I think you might be right,

I read several years ago...and  more than once, that Frankie is deaf. He may be using timing - and intimate knowledge of the recorded songs -- to continue to perform
