Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / PET SQUARES #3A The Beach Boys Outside 1962-63
|

|
Hi all...I just did a pretty cool bonus episode of PET SQUARES (a Geek's Guide to the Beach Boys) for patrons of the KarmaFrog1 youTube channel, an hour covering the Beach Boys' outside work in 1962-63: Kenny and the Cadets, Bob & Sheri, Rachel & The Revolvers, Gary Usher, Jan & Dean and The Honeys. I had such a blast doing this (and of course, always hoping to expand patronage for the channel) that I put up the first part on youTube for regular consumption. If you're interested in seeing the whole thing, just follow the links in the first comment on the video to become a patron at any level. But it's a fun 20+ minutes regardless....a bit looser than your average episode. https://youtu.be/V0GPV1VLyrY

I'm finished watching it. Just like the last episode, really enjoyable and insightful! I'm looking forward to the "Little Deuce Coupe" album. That one gets overlooked quite a bit, but there's some very strong material on it. Wondering if you will go into "Cherry, cherry Coupe"'s chorus where Mike is rapping underneath the backgroundvoices, something that Brian would later do in "Cabin essence" as well. Thanks for flagging that part; I never noticed it but will keep an ear out. I'm actually not that familiar with the next few albums so it will be fun for me.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / PET SQUARES #3 reinstated to youTube

The video so hot Brother Records tried to have it banned! Not really, but after an erroneous copyright claim PET SQUARES #3 - a deep dive into the Surfer Girl album - has been reinstated to youTube, and you may now watch it at the same link as before: https://youtu.be/-iDFkXOV1FwWe lost some momentum with the video being taken down, so spread the word if you enjoy the show! I want to thank BRI for being proactive in getting this matter resolved. Through their representatives they made it clear to me that this was a mistake and they are not trying to get BBs-related content removed from youTube. Creators may breathe easier for now.

Just for everyone's info (not to sidetrack this discussion), BRI has taken down the video and youTube assessed a copyright strike on the grounds that I posted "the entire Surfer Girl album." Since there's no content from the album at all barring a short segment where I break down the harmony parts to "Surfer Girl," this is obviously a clerical error albeit a careless and infuriating one. The video will return once BRI and I have had words on this subject.

I'm watching right now. Enjoying it, just as last time. Thanks for sharing!
Re: The mysterious part on "Surfer Girl" (song)
Now, I haven't listened to the original and basically I'm not the one you should ask when it comes to multi part harmony. I just can't hear it. But I love it. What I was reminded of though, is an interview with Murry that I'd read in "Back to the Beach" (the german translation). Murry mentioned that he and Audree from time to time would fill out the voices on songs wthout the Boys' knowledge (IIRC Murry mentioned "409" as an example). I don't know if there's anything to that. Maybe he was just telling bs. But since this question came up I thought I would mention it.
Oh great info! Thank you for that. I wonder how they could have done it without the boys' knowledge though? Microphone in the booth? I'll ask Craig about that. No idea. But it's certainly possible that Murry was just talking crap. So it should be taken with a grain of salt. I just remembered that interview when you talked about that "missing" part. But it would be interesting if Craig knows something about it. Even if it's just to debunk Murry's claim. I think we're all pretty certain that Al is the phantom fifth part. But prior to Al's re-entry into the group there are a few places where it's theorized that there's an extra voice in the mix with various possibilities...David Marks, Bob Norberg...Murry's certainly possible.

The one thing I'm starting to realize from doing the PET SQUARES show is what a great musician Carl was. He didn't have Brian's flair for composition but he was a much stronger and more well-rounded player, and contributed a lot more than just lead guitar. Basically anything that needed to be done within the band that was outside the realm seemed to get delegated to Carl.

"The falsetto? I remember reading it was Carl, although personally I thought it was Bruce."
There are two falsettos on this track. During the bridge, Carl sings the falsetto after Dennis' line "I dream of you..." For decades I thought this falsetto was Brian but Alan Boyd confirmed it was Carl. The second falsetto comes on the tag of the track. This falsetto is Bruce. Bruce also provided falsetto on Pacific Ocean Blue (notably on End of the Show).
Just to cycle back here, the falsetto on the tag is actually Carl as well. I know this because I myself thought it was Brian, and I was over at Alan Boyd's house one night and he played me the soloed tag vocals. I was wrong; it was Carl.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / New PET SQUARES ep: "The Surfin' USA Album"
|
on: February 28, 2021, 08:01:31 AM
|
Just did an early drop of the 2nd episode of PET SQUARES because of the success of the youTube Patreon drive (today is the last day) and the great response to the 1st episode. The topic is the 2nd album SURFIN' USA and the dive is deep indeed, discussion about why Dennis didn't play on the single (or did he?), whether Al sings on "Lonely Sea," and Mike's surprisingly pervasive but inaudible sax playing throughout this album. It runs rather long at 47 minutes and there are enunciation issues in spots trying to get all the information in. I'll work on that in future episodes. Here it is...enjoy and thanks for watching! https://youtu.be/9viopZgxHKQ

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pilot for new Beach Boys youTube show: PET SQUARES

Thanks guys. I've gotten a few corrections/challenges to my perceptions but it's been done in the nicest possible way LOL. I'm going to try to incorporate it all into the next show but the comments thread is developing into a pretty neat little well of minutia.
The response to the show has been terrific and there will be another one coming in a little while.
I'm just gonna work my way through the albums until I get bored with it, which is kind of an inevitability, so at that point I might just go off into the weeds with some weird topic. I'm also considering doing some offshoot videos for Patreon subscribers. The suggestions are appreciated.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Pilot for new Beach Boys youTube show: PET SQUARES

Hi all, it's Adam Marsland. I don't know if the world needs another Beach Boys youTube show/podcast, but I'm trying one out anyway. The show is called PET SQUARES and I break down the Beach Boys' albums with the help and input of some of the best Beach Boys authorities out there. It's wonky, geeky and a little bit irreverent. The pilot episode covers the Surfin' Safari album: https://youtu.be/33b9zyOtGPoThis show is one of several things I'm trying out this month to expand the KarmaFrog1 youTube channel, which is home to music videos and my travel show ADAM WALKS AROUND. If you like the show and want to see it continue, comment, like, subscribe, and also check out our Patreon page: www.patreon.com/karmafrog1. If you don't like it, flame away! Ha!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Spirit of Rock N Roll - Hallmark (Songs from Here and Back) version
|
on: February 12, 2021, 05:39:33 PM

While he might've gone along and done it, I can only imagine that Brian must have been bored to redo the same song again and again. Especially since it was a song that had its origins in a difficult time., Memories of Landy, plus memories of his brother and Al boycotting a session... I tend to doubt that Brian had a burning desire to re-re-record the song in the 2000s, of course I could be wrong but I do wonder whose idea it was. There were probably some folks tasked with going through the archives for song ideas to resurrect.
I guess this song might've had some potential in the 1980s, it really only feels appropriate to that decade and to no other decade, sort of like Rock N Roll to the Rescue. Taking this old song out of the decade and re-recording it years later seems a bit like the band singing about going to school and having a crush on schoolgirls on late '70s tunes. Obviously not the same situation, but as a general thing the 2000s version is just an odd mashup of eras/ideas that doesn't really work.
I agree. It really was a perfect song (I'd even argue in favor of the goofy guitar solo in that context) for its time. I always remember the thrill of hearing it on the special, back in 1986 land, and the disappointment hearing the versions that made it out.
