7526  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys - A Vocal Element: Live 1967 on: April 01, 2006, 10:33:54 AM
Played the track to a CSNY fan the other day and he thought it might actually be Stephen Stills... I couldn't begin to guess myself. Sure ain't Neil Young though. But having listened to the discs again I'm guessing that the Buffalo Springfield were on the same bill that night (and others of this collection) and joined the BBs on stage for the final chorus of Sloop John B on the night in qustion.

Oh aye, I think there might also be a vocal contribution from a member of Buffalo Springfield -  there's a really gruff vocal at one stage and the Springfield gets a mention to the audience at the end...  like I say, I'll be listening close for a while now!

Daryl Dragon and Ron Brown are both credited with being present on the new Vocal Element live 67 boot set, though despite the band's professionalism during the performances there's maybe an unlying hint that they might be fearing the end of their careers? There's some form of desperation, and acceptance that maybe their time to fade away has come -  afterall, suddenly Brian's taking less of a hand, other bands are up-coming and a sea-change is happening in the music world. They're still playing Graduation Day, Johnny B Good and I Get Around. Despite Pet Sounds and Good Vibes this is the same band, in almost every respect, that appears on the Lost Concert DVD, just with a few new tuns to offer. No wonder they pumped it up in the coming months. They needed to offer more entertainment to the punters walking through the door for a live show.

I've heard the set now and it's great -  crystal clear sound and some asides from Mike that set the period -  taking the mickey out of Al for being the only BB on stage to wear a stripey shirt (that's my interpretation if it!), comments about Nick Grillo's fees, self denegaration of how Smiley Smile sold and relentless pumping of the forthcoming Wild Honey album.

There's an attempt at performing the Leid in Haiwaii Calif Girls fade that's written off there and then on stage, wiyth more self-mocking.

The promo spots all sound familiar but there's more to some of them than has been released before -  a few seconds here and there.

Packaging is a bit ugly but that's a matter of personal taste -  it's a great set.

Only thing that bugs me is that one of the gigs doesn't seem to be attributed to a date, and they're not in chronological order which maks it harder to tell when it's from. Badman doesn't give all set lists for that brief period, and the set lists he does give don't exactly correspond with what's here anyway.

Anyone checked it against Eric Anniversario's site? I've misplaced the link...

Gonna be giving it a good, proper listen over the next two days - I've nothing else to do while I drive 700 miles, given that smoking in hire cars is now banned in Scotland...

Should have a copy within the next three or four days - will let you know how it hangs!
7531  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sunflower double-LP on: March 22, 2006, 08:24:46 AM
I think the tracks, while all individually brilliant in the main, would have been too musically diverse to make a cohesive entity. The one uniting factor they all had was Desper's superb engineering, and hence the magical sound of the album. Beautifully clear.

That explains why I couldn't get it. But what excitement  -  a new project by Brad! And he's looking for investors! I've just sent him a cheque for $200 (honest, cross my Elliot)  and am going to auction the two signed copies of First Wave I ordered... if they ever arrive!

Hi Charles,

Could you check that URL? I'm registered for the Hoffman boards but get "go no further" message which I click on the link.

Many thanks...
7534  Smiley Smile Stuff / Book Reviews / Re: Andrew Doe's Complete Guide To The Music Of The Beach Boys on: March 11, 2006, 01:59:53 AM
Very nice product, reviewing every BBs album track by track, in the context of what was happening in the band's/family's lives at the time. Agree or otherwise with Andrew's take on certain albums, this is highly entertaining. The original edition was the ideal size for me as I could sneak it into the smallest room each morning for a lengthy read. Edition Number Two however is roughy standard paperback size; if the paper were softer it'd've been the ideal size to wipe, but it ain't, so no more morning reads! Still, expanded to cover later and solo works up to SMiLE live, the new edition is a must-have.
7535  Smiley Smile Stuff / Book Reviews / Re: Back to the Beach : A Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys Reader on: March 11, 2006, 01:51:26 AM
Agreed - a terrific collection of writings about Brian and the Beach Boys from various magazine and newspaper articles over the years, with plenty about SMiLE. How much more does any sane person need to know?!?! One advantage over David Leaf's excellent book is the various authors' takes on the band and what's going on -  it's not one guy's star-struck interpretation of history.  And it's editted by that very very nice chap Kingsley...
7536  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds is emotional death. on: March 09, 2006, 05:58:35 AM
Too true. Always the album I put on at the end of  a relationship... I'd like to say I'll never hear it again but it strikes cheerful chords too.

Plus That's Not Me IS about me actually...

And Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) was the tune to which one lass put her head on my shoulder...

Sloop John B though just doesn't strike an emotional chord, but then I never did get pressganged...

Actually that's not funny. A friend of mine did that once.  You need to be very careful and not so complacent, guys.
7538  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Reunion: how would you plan it? on: March 08, 2006, 03:43:52 AM
Blimey you chaps, this is one of those "shall I take my medicine and get better, or not swallow it cos it tastes bloody awful!" questions.

Anyway, assuming it happens, Ricky and Blondie have got to be there to represent Carl's good taste, at least.

Bruce can also still handle a lead. Mike Love however has always grated except when he's been hitting the bass notes. David Marks, well he could guest on a few tracks or be part of the backing band?

But wouldn't Foskett's nose be put out of joint by all those other frontmen?

I suspect we're all dreaming for an ideal that never even was, let alone could ever be.

Studiowise they'd have to do something incredibly bloomin' good - better than Radiohead, U2, Macca, Arctic Monkeys or whatever -  as there's a lot of credibility needs to be rewon in the eyes of the public before a Pink Floyd-style reunion generates more than laughter. Remember, to most folk they're still an Endless Summer Beach Band whose credibility went out the window after Good Vibes. We are the faithful but there ain't THAT many of us. The Floyd were always a serious prospect.

The setlist is interesting to me: first half of the show, some excellent recent stuff and only a smattering of oldies. Second half, oldies galore.  Heading towards the touring jukebox already?

The cover artwork for this boot is exellent - based on the 73 In Concert album but meatier; back slick is based on the 70s reissue two-fer CDs.  Veeery nice.
7541  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Hallmark album on: February 03, 2006, 07:02:55 AM
Lifted from DJ M's excellent www.uncanny1.blogspot.com

Mike Love: I’m hoping that it [Love's new album] comes out in the spring. I know there’s one song that was slated for that album that’s going to come out by Father’s Day. Hallmark is going to do an issue of a bunch of Beach Boys’ songs plus one from me called Cool Head and Warm Heart, which is an expression that Maharishi made about 10 years ago. I was at a TM gathering in Vlodrop, Holland, and I remember him saying, “You need a cool head and a warm heart,” and I said, “Wow, that’s cool,” so I made up a little song that says “You need a cool head and a warm heart to get you through the day without coming apart. You need a cool head and a warm heart and that’s how every day should start.” So there’s another situation there. My new CD has a lot of philosophy on there, meaning philosophical point of view, not overbearingly I hope, but just little hints. Maybe it’s “don’t get stressed out, especially when there are things you can do nothing about. The nature of life is to be always changing and what you need when things start to rearrangin’ is a cool head and warm heart.” That is going to come out on that CD that Hallmark is coming out with. They’re planning a huge campaign and they’re going to have it out in the stores apparently for Father’s Day, so I’m hoping that concurrent with that, I can get my CD out as well.
7542  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Unreleased Live shows ? on: January 02, 2006, 04:56:04 AM
We've discussed this before and I can't believe that BRI or Capitol still haven't picked up on the idea. The Doors have Bright Midnight that releases quality archive gigs, The Who release just about every darned gig they perform these days, Pete Townsend puts out his own stuff... all limited release, high quality... The Beach Boys set a high standard for reissues with the two-fers and the Good Vibes and Pet Sounds box sets but are falling behind in the aspect of live material... unless you count Knebworth. But I'd rather see all that early 70s stuff put out properly.    Maybe it ought to b left to the bootleggers, who keep proving time and again that the stuff's out there!
7543  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / The David Wall collection on: December 25, 2005, 10:03:26 AM
UK fans (and those in the US) might remember David Wall of Yorkshire. I remember him as my first regular source of cheap boots! (home produced cassettes of varying quality).

Well, I just learned that David passed away recenly. Some of his friends might be aware of this, some might not.

Condolences to his family and friends, and apologies to any folks on this board to who this might come as news and as a shock -  I haven't a clue how to contact the relevant people. (apologies also, of course, if this is old news... I've been out of sync for a while).

I'm sure many might be interested to know that a chunk ofn his collection has been bought by Wall of Sound records in the Piece Hall, Halifax... no boots, but some very fascinating stuff, especially the vinyl -  Blondie Chaplin's solo album, THREE different versions of (American) Spring's first album, some autographed Mike Love solo stuff... the list is pretty darned extensive and I'm only telling you this cos I can't possibly afford one-hundredth of it!

Enjoy the bounty, and raise your glasses fondly to David's memory.
