151  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Lifetime ban on AGD on: April 28, 2016, 03:49:18 PM
It's like the movie sparticus!

Yes! One of the best scenes!

When is this going to stop? Seriously...when? Ever? AGD could be a pain and if he crossed the line so be it but seriously....years and years of this from the usual suspects. Explain to me what the difference is between this stuff and listening to two 9 year olds laughing at each others fart noises. Several people have already tried to politely point this out in this very thread and on it will go. For better or for worse at least Andrew was a walking encyclopedia of Beach Boys history and had a reason for being here.

Because you expect 9 years to laugh at fart noises. I don't expect a supposedly well-respected historian and "fact-checker" to spread infantile gossip behind the scenes (which then traveled to other posters). Mike's Beard, I read your little whine on the Hoffman board, to make things perfectly clear (short of drawing this out in crayon): We've all had to read for the last year or two the Cincinnati Kid's opinions on certain subjects (opinions that really seemed to be based on bad information). He bragged about his source, that we would all be surprised if we knew who it was. Turns out his "source" was getting his info from Andrew G Doe. Turns out that information was wrong. If you can't easily see the danger in young posters being spread bad information based on that incident, then trying to explain this is an exercise in futility.

If a poster is using the board's PM function to spread malicious and potentially libelous gossip behind the scenes that involves Brian's CHILDREN/adoption for god's sake I would hope the mods would ban that person no matter WHO it was. That it was being spread by someone who we're all supposed to trust to have the right information is honestly even worse.

Perhaps it all was second hand information - but let's then ask who that information came from, and why on earth it seems like Andrew didn't fact-check this information before spreading it to those who didn't know any better. And also, why was all of this negativity aimed at one person? Honestly, the sum total of what I've found out the last couple weeks makes me realize just how hated of a person Melinda Wilson is in certain circles. All of that speculation, gossip, and flat out wrong allegations were spread to this very board. And then subsequently spread to other posters.

And now this is getting to the point where you guys are trying to vilify Charles LePage (who is gracious enough to run this flippin board) for trying to do the right thing. Seriously, I hope the mods release this information in some fashion, because I think it would shut a lot of people up here.

Of course, some exodus of Doe followers will happen when Lee Dempsey finds or makes the promised land of boards. However, Charles is exactly right - these problems will show up on any board where these people are allowed on...and best of luck to that, because we see how it has played out time and time again.

Some fine points Rab. Can't argue with the most of it.

As I've said elsewhere I wasn't party to the misinformation being spread, missed the brief revelations on the Hoff board. The most I know a out it is what I've just read here, that it seems to involve Brian, the adoption of his children and some hatred from some quarters towards Melinda. That conjures up some terrible speculative thoughts that make me wish I hadn't read the post at all.

So do the allegations get posted so there's no ambiguity, or do we just move on and get back to focussing on the music… and maybe delete this thread, as, to be honest, these hints and spoilers ain't good.

Hmmm… spot the difference. Both from Spin CD website - one's illustrating the Japanese version, the other's the UK version. One of 'em's gotta be wrong…
153  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's musical arrangement inspirations for (primarily) Pet Sounds and Smile on: April 27, 2016, 03:34:47 PM
I believe it was a building of influences starting with Rhapsody in Blue first heard as a child.

Agreed… and I'd love to see a lengthy playlist of what Murry Wilson listened to when Brian was a little kid as I'm sure that must have made a big mark on those young impressionable ears. Or ear. I also wonder how many of the songs on Brian's Gershwin album might have been on that playlist and whether there might have been some unacknowledged but deliberate tip of the hat in that direction? For all the abuse that came down from on high, the influences in terms of musical taste, from father to son, must have been indelibly strong in a house so filled with music.

That would be appreciated Billy. Seems we can't discuss this subject over on Hoffman either! Sad

I know what you mean about the pass distribution; it might have been better handled perhaps, at times; I was on the periphery and lucked out by chance really. The first pass I ever received was from David Leaf, at the RFH 2002 - I'd chatted with him and Melinda, who were sat in the seats behind me most nights. Why they kept choosing to sit behind me, I'll never know! Wink. I agree, Melinda was/is a star, a fine lady. She had Brian's back at those gigs for sure, and appreciated the fans' support for her husband.

Seems we were at many of the same gigs… maybe we should wear red carnations in May and have a beer!

Worth adding to my encounter notes above than on more than one occasion I was given an after-show backstage pass by none other than AGD. For which I'd like to take the opportunity to thank him again.

sh*t… too late.

Manning, considering you're close enough to Andrew to get backstage passes, I find it incredibly hard to believe that your only avenue of communication with him is this forum. Unless you just wrote that comment to stir up sh*t. Which wouldn't be surprising given the infantile nature of half the posts surrounding this incident.

I barely knew him at the time and we've not shared a lot of time in each other's presence since - bumped into him at the odd BBs & BW gig or two; he was at one of the very few Stomp conventions I attended once, and we must have breathed the same air at a handful of Beach Boys Britain events ten or more years ago. Barely spoke on those occasions either. We never sat down over a pint to discuss any mutual interests, and we don't socialise at all… but I am pleased to have met him a couple or three times over the last 20 or so years.

I think I'm right in remembering that back in those glorious days of the 2002 PS gigs one of the band members had given him (or was it Val?) a bunch of passes to distribute to members of Beach Boys Britain and other fellow fans after the gigs. These weren't particularly exclusive "meet your hero" affairs, just the icing on the cake after a series of terrific gigs. These things were handed out by Andrew and others to, I dunno, I'd guess dozens of others - it was the way the Brit BW fan scene rolled at the time, like one big happy family. Please forgive me if I've got any details wrong, it was two or three  lifetimes ago.

Andrew and I have swapped occasional emails and FB messages as well as PMs here; I've never though been treated to any of the "slanderous" messages he's been accused of sending to others on this board (I'm curious enough to wish I had, but not so curious - or intrusive - as to bother asking! Smiley ).

I am, like many others, very disappointed - in more ways than one - to learn that he's been accused of such things. I've not seen the evidence myself but trust the Mods to behave in the right way over something so serious - the fact that Charles created a thread specifically to deal with it shows how seriously they all took it, and was an acknowledgement that they appreciated their decision would be of sufficient concern to others on the board that something would need to be said, some explanation given. In effect, to me it shows the respect they themselves have had for Andrew.

I wish that thread had been in the General on Topic section of the board; I'd've seen it sooner that way, and wouldn't be posting about the matter in another thread tonight.

For that I apologise, especially to the Mods, and will leave the matter at that.

But thanks for asking - and please, call me John, it's one of the reasons I post here using my real name.

No real surprise… I suspect this'll be of bootleg quality and will consist of stuff many have already heard. Hopefully I'll be wrong!

here is my copy of the ultra rare Zeppo Wilson 45.  Not many of these around.

I had the picture disc. Damned if I know what I did with it. Maybe I left it in the pocket of my other suit. No! This is my other suit.

Reading the small print, it looks like this was the Canadian release (or were all Zeppo's North American discs pressed in Canadia?). Did it come in a picture sleeve?
Never liked the font used on Capitol album labels in Canada. Singles I had no problem with.

I find that font causes a subliminal bass undertone in the left channel or, if the speakers are incorrectly wired, the right channel.
160  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The December 1964 event. on: April 25, 2016, 10:37:33 PM
If Brian had truly been incapacitated by the pressure and had a true "nervous breakdown," he would have been much less able to embark on a period of his greatest artistic growth--which is precisely what occurred when he was able to get off the road.

...

Your point about people who break down not being an out-and-out mental case actually supports the notion that someone would engineer such an episode.

While I don't disagree with much of your post, it is certainly the case that people have authentic panic attacks that don't hinder their ability to proceed afterward with their work. That someone did good work after a panic attack is no evidence that the panic attack was 'faked' or 'engineered' or whatever.

When Brian openly states that he faked the airplane incident, I'll believe him. Until then I will stick with the status quo. There is way too much nutty speculation on this board and I just found the AGD ban thread today so I'm at a loss as to figure out the fact from fiction here anymore.

Andrew is banned?

http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,23685.0.html

Yes, I am on this board every day and only found out yesterday!

Sorry to take this thread on a tangent, but I too just learned about AGD’s ban (in this thread), and I have to say it’s quite sad.  Since that AGD ban thread is locked, I'll just say here that it almost feels like kicking Mike out of the band. The guy who is imperfect to say the least, but does unquestionably have value to add. I get the reasons, maybe it had to happen, and granted - I'm not privy to PMs that apparently went on which sound like they were inappropriate - but it’s a big bummer regardless to people like myself, who are BB information sponges.

Just before I knew about this ban, about a week and a half ago, I randomly saw a California AGD license plate on a car parked at a mall, and I snapped a photo – I was waiting for the right moment to post it on this board. I guess now’s as good a time as any.

Apologies for the further tangental posting but I too just found out last night. The banning thread is closed and as I wanted to pass some comment this seems the only marginally acceptable place to make it. Ironic that it's one of those scholarly threads for which Andrew is held in such regard.

I spent the rest of the night and an hour this morning reading the thread about his banning and while I recognise some of the character traits being alluded to there I have to say that I've never received any of the emails/PMs that folk are describing. I don't doubt that such things were received: I'm only surprised to find out about it now because AGD and I shared views and opinions about certain individuals and if he had wanted to slander/libel folk I might have been a receptive naive target for such falsehoods as were hinted at - I should stress that I'm talking about certain Smiley board members here, his "fuckwits, shitweasels and trolls", not members of the band or any band member's family or associates).

I believe the Mods and Chuck when they say this was a considered and necessary step. I believe those who claim to have received the terrible PMs. I'm gutted at the circumstances of his banning.

Even so, the sum total of what AGD's given this board in the past adds up to more than most of us could ever hope to contribute and I share the hope that a probationary return might be contemplated in time, as the board is already lessened by his - and now Lee's - absence.

163  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Meeting Brian Wilson on: April 23, 2016, 12:49:05 PM
I will really appreciate it if you stayed on topic and began sharing your stories - both new posters and old fans who recently attended BW show and maybe had a chance to go backstage and talk/sign an album. I bumped this thread in hopes to read new stories.

Okay. I met Brian on several occasions, after the 2002 Pet Sounds gigs (RFH) and Feb 2004 UK Smile gigs. They were meet n' greet signings, back in the days before they started charging for such social occasions. You know the score: stand in line, wait your turn, shake his hand, get something signed, say something gushing, then womble off and try to compose yourself.

At one such signing - probably Newcastle, but I'm trying to recall things from 12 years ago - Brian wasn't exactly interacting much - Brian conducted the signings in virtual silence - but, having seen a handful of Smile shows by then, I commented to him on how the shows were getting better each evening and he suddenly looked up at me and agreed very enthusiastically that they were getting stronger and stronger. His animated acknowledgement, agreement with my (heartfelt) comment took me by sheer surprise and dumbfounded me. Then thing's got straight back to silent signings.

He didn't invite me back to his place or anything. Not yet anyway…

I miss AGD.

I Miss Whiplash.

In those days I guess there was no surcharge for the meet & greet with photo opportunity and signed tote bag thrown in! An extra 65c?
166  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: No Room For Brian....Mega Concert Planned. on: April 16, 2016, 05:51:57 PM

As for Brian's exclusion, I reckon the promoters would want a reformed Beach Boys act (as in, the gang getting back together, C50-style, rather than them swearing off drugs, drink n' dames) rather than one solo member. Though that makes Roger Waters' inclusion contrary to my thinking already…

Don't forget McCartney.

I didn't… there's not enough of his gang left for a get together really.  Suppose the same might be argued of Pink Floyd, thinking about it…. Macca's also had a mega solo career and great success in bis own right since the Beatles split.
167  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson Live in Japan on: April 15, 2016, 10:10:35 PM
It was Johnny B Goode. Brian wanted to play it so everyone learned it on the spot.

It was amazing. Made me very excited for the rock n roll album - the arrangement sounded MASSIVE.

Many thanks, that'd be a fine encore number. I seem to remember it being played by Brian and band a long time ago…

ETA: got it - they were encoring with it in 2005 (thanks to Eric's setlist site). Good if it gets reinstated!
168  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: No Room For Brian....Mega Concert Planned. on: April 15, 2016, 10:06:19 PM
Which of these acts will be headline, making all the others support acts?!?!?!?

Anyone care to speculate on the price of a ticket? This could be a mega corporate trough exercise for bonus-fuelled bankers, stock market coke heads and media magnates rather than a religious experience for music fans.

Nice line-up though; I'd consider it myself of course if that other mega band, the '70s act the Bay City Rollers, were booked too.

Shang-a-lang, dudes!

Sincere thanks Woodstock, great reviews that really whet the appetite.

So glad Nick gets the due credit for playing on PS… he's such a fine guitarist. Can't wait to hear Matt in May… damn, can't wait to hear them all.

Can you clarify what the sound check "rock and roll" number was?
171  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love book out in September on: April 13, 2016, 11:38:51 PM
Given the fact that most BW Band members were big fans of the big man long before they even met him, I suppose you could argue that Brian Wilson (as billed) is a Brian Wilson tribute band.

(Enough of this, surely?  Undecided )
172  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Good Vibrations 50th Anniversary global commemorative release announced on: April 13, 2016, 03:10:18 PM
I'd love to have all of the extant GV sessions footage unearthed a few years back. But I think it remains to be seen how "intact" the footage is in terms of continuous shots. As I've said in the past, it has the vibe of "b-roll" footage; short bits of footage meant to be some sort of montage or background for something else. There may well not be any particularly long segments to sync up to session tapes.

I was referring simply to the footage as released online to date… agree that there's unlikely to be full fly on the wall sessions filmed . Apologies if post was unclear, been to a meeting in a pub.! Rare opportunity n' all that… made the most!
173  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Good Vibrations 50th Anniversary global commemorative release announced on: April 13, 2016, 02:27:05 PM
I'd hope for a DVD/Blu-ray featuring both the recently (2011?) found Vibes sessions footage (set up though it might have been), both synced to audio and an unedited version of everything found, along with the fire station promo footage filmed at the time.

That, along with the very best, listenable outtakes from the recording sessions.

And any recently found trial mixes, vocal overdubs etc.

Plus a series of CDs featuring at least one live performance from each year between 1966 and 2016, by the BBs, BW band, BBs' Family and Friends etc.

Maybe not the last bit… Wink

+1 vote for the thread to keep its own identity until after this leg of the tour.

These reviews are so much more readable than "hey guys, I got seat 34a in row 99d, block 554a(I) - see you by the ice cream franchise in seven weeks - and counting!"
