Disappointed that this thread about rape is still in the General On Topic arena.

Thought we were here for the music. Surely the Sandbox is for this serious stuff.

I get why some are speculating as to evidence that wasn't presented in a news column. However it's the evidence that was presented to the jury that's pertinent.

Sail Away.

Judd:   for the record, the Sail Away on Orange Crate Art is so many million miles better

Judd:   I'm beginning to think all these songs would be a lot better if they just TURNED DOWN THE FUCKING DRUMS, it's the sound of being smacked in the face

Bubs:   now, Judd, when you think of Blondie, what's the first thing that pops to mind?

Judd:   ooooh because it's also about sailing

Bubs:   what you think of when you think of Blondie is sailing. so, we'll just take that idea, right, and we'll take away the good song part, and it'll be fine

Bubs:   he was the rockin' guy, now he's singing another commercial for Aruba

Bubs:   I have to imagine someone was like, "Hey, Blondie, you remember when you sang that song ‘Sail On, Sailor,’ right? We're gonna put you on a song called 'Sail Away' and fans will eat that sh*t up."

Judd:    it's just such an empty song

Judd: it's such dreck

Judd:   just thinking about this album is so strenuous. it doesn't quite get to you that this is an album with Brian Wilson's name on it… it's all the problems with Brian's solo career in one song

Judd:   it just pisses me off. he's the guy who f***ed with the formula, now he's making this turgid, worthless, safe bullcrap that no-one will think is good in a few decades' time. I WISH I COULD BLAME JOE THOMAS

Bubs:   it was not well received

Judd:   I see Sail Away singled out a lot by people

Bubs:   as the good one?

Judd:   yeah

So much truth in this… yet hilarious! Keep it up, please!

Apparently there is still a lot of legal stuff going on with regard to this case particularly with regards to Scott's defence so I would suggest that discussion ceases on here about the case, at least until the 14th June when the court reconvenes.

He's been found guilty by a jury. Full stop.

Scott Bennett is a convicted rapist. That is now a fact.

The court will reconvene to formally sentence him, not to weigh in further on his responsibility.

Wirestone's absolutely right. Bennett is guilty as charged. That doesn't change, at least not for now. Prior to the trial he was innocent until proven guilty; then he was proven guilty.

What he did - and a jury has determined from the evidence presented to them from both sides that he did do what he was accused of - was appalling. He can appeal of course but until an appeal finds otherwise he is guilty.

Bloody tragic for all involved.

Speculation should cease. Speculation that an appeal might find him innocent is extremely unfair on the victim. Speculation that be might have committed other crimes is unfair on Bennett, despite this conviction. Speculation is needless and cannot be fair on those actually involved with or close to the case.

Again, I think this needs Sandboxing; any implication for the tour could be discussed in the tour thread. Or maybe the two threads could be merged, if they really are all about the tour and the implications for the tour.

Was/is Bennett a member here?

What has happened between my former keyboard player Scott Bennet and the Rogers County District Court in Claremont, OK is a matter between them.
I have no further comment.
- Brian Wilson

Well said. Brian's washed his hands of this and we all should as well.

Aye.
131  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Extraordinarily disappointing news regarding Scott Bennett on: May 07, 2016, 01:23:54 PM
I wonder if he's done this before.

Is that an off the cuff statement or does something suggest he might have? I'd rather not even consider it. That's for the authorities.
132  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Extraordinarily disappointing news regarding Scott Bennett on: May 07, 2016, 01:21:42 PM

Reading this account, (much of the attack on video), is stomach turning and disgusting! He should be thrown in prison for the maximum allowable penalty!

My questions are when did Brian's camp know about this and why wasn't he immediately fired? Anybody know how many shows he played after his arrest?

They were possibly working to the principle of "innocent until proven guilty". Which to my mind was absolutely the way to go.

I'd guess they knew of the case and the impending trial but might not have known the detail of the prosecution's evidence. If the suggestion that this is why Billy was waiting for a call proves correct, then they obviously planned for this possible outcome. Again, correct procedure to my mind: why should Scott's crime wreck the tour? The fans come first in this aspect of the story.

This is one terrible blow for all concerned. I hope it doesn't spoil people's enjoyment of the music because in the end that's what it's all about and what brings us here.

Echoes of what has happened before in BBs world, to even greater notoriety, with Manson and Cease to Exist. I can appreciate that tune without thinking about any of the connotations.

I hope we and everyone actually concerned with the case can move forward. I'll miss Scotty's contribution to Brian's music and the live experience, but it's right that he departs the scene now. This kind of crime is unforgiveable. I hope the poor victim has found some way forward from this.

Agree that this should be Sandboxed.

Nothing to do with anything, it's just always fun to have an excuse to put this out there.

I really appreciate that. Especially at breakfast! Sad

More than likely the photographer asked them to get huggy: a good snapper would know the best composition/shape for that title that left space for masthead, cover lines, price details (and these days a barcode…). I wouldn't read too much into the apparent chumminess! Smiley

It's not often seen, though, remember the (in)famous Montrose album cover, bare-chested men getting chummy:

Cripes, one scary cover! Was it artistically brave to obscure the artists' faces with type or just a piss-poor decision?!

I'd love to see a genuinely independent doc on the band. Not a "warts and all" horror story, but not a fanboy flick either. Something that tells the story in a properly balanced way that's fair to the band without wrapping them up in cotton wool. Chances of the band allowing sufficient access for that to happen are as slim as my bank balance…!

As far as I can tell, outside of "Japan exclusive" tracks, usually for new album releases, weird Japan pressings (SHM, Blu-spec, etc.) of old albums have never housed unique mixes of vintage tracks.

Whatever is on the PS Japan SHM CD, I'm guessing it's something that has already been released elsewhere.

Thanks for this. I wondered if it was a typo in the listing but that didn't seem likely for both… will report back when it arrives!
142  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: on: May 02, 2016, 07:25:05 AM
Thanks again John,

I'm one of those who regard PS as something of a soundtrack to my life; letting go of my libido will no doubt be the last (or next) phase.

Anyways, this all makes this Japanese SHM stereo/mono release of more interest than I'd first assumed, so long as the listings given at both sites are accurate:

Many thanks John, I think I've visited one of two sites like that in the past in search of rarities! I'm 200 miles from home at the mo so have no way of double-checking my collection; am I right in misremembering that we've yet to have a legit finished stereo release of Ego?
145  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: on: May 01, 2016, 03:50:29 AM
Can anyone point me at any release which includes a finished stereo version of "Ego" please?

Gawd, I'm sorry to have missed this thread before.

Timely discovery as I have discovered a new, all-time favourite beer. I had my first pint at the wake following my boss's funeral so I guess you could say he introduced me to it, albeit unwittingly. As the company picked up the bar tab, you could also say it was on him, so "cheers", one final time.

It's a Yorkshire beer which means it already has a head start in the "world's best beer" stakes.

It's brewed by Theakstons of Masham and is called Theastons Peculiar Barista Stout.

It's gas-fed, not hand-drawn but in this case that's not a disadvantage.

It seems to be based on Theakstons Old Peculiar, a very dark, dense beer that has a hint of dandelion & burdock (Yorkshire's answer to Coca Cola, only better) to it. As the name suggests, it also has a big roasted coffee flavour.

Only found it in that one venue (the Vaults in Ilkley) so far but am hoping to find it closer to home. The drink drive laws here mean that it takes me 17 hours to walk home after every session, by which time I need another drink…
147  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Lifetime ban on AGD on: April 29, 2016, 11:55:58 PM
My two cents for what it's worth.

The AGD thread is a good idea to keep discussion away from the main threads.

I received a PM from Andrew.  No gossip and no bullying.  We'll miss his input here but he's still on Beach Boys Britain if we need him!

GuitarFool getting upset at Alan Smith calling out Chuck - Chuck said he was against Mikey joining the board.  The impression I got was he was always against it.  The post Alan linked to suggested otherwise.  Hence the reason Alan posted it.

Moderators should not be confrontational but instead look to defuse situations.  Billy is good at this, others not so much.  The board has seriously gone downhill the last few years.  I will miss Lee Dempsey, but at least he said goodbye!  Hopefully others won't follow him out the door.

Too many people see agendas when there aren't any.  Most of us are here because we want to talk about the music.  We don't hate any of the Beach Boys.  Hate is such a strong emotion, especially when everyone has their faults.

Hopefully everything will get back on track, although we are a little depleted with the amount of knowledgeable posters who have been driven away.

As a wise and forgiving man once said, "Love and Mercy"!

This is all good stuff.

Mike's point about moderation is a good one. If a mod appears outwardly confrontational, or overly defensive, then my own reaction - rightly or wrongly - is to be suspicious; I suspect others have the same instinct.

That said I was never too proud about the way I joined in the piling-on on to Craig and sincerely apologise for that, if it's not too late. I lacked self control - and not for the first time - and though I don't think it was handled well on either side, I recognise that I didnt behave too well.

I'm very grateful for the fact that this thread has been reopened and that the topics being discussed herein therefore aren't infecting the rest of the board.

I'll reserve the right to miss Mikie, AGD, Runnerz and others. I enjoyed and valued their posts, each for different reasons, and I'll continue to enjoy conversing with some of them via other means. They're banned - they weren't executed after all! LOL - but I value their knowledge, friendship and humour (and am blissfully ignorant of why they were banned; they've never offended me).

... every word of every mod discussion is archived and available. ...

Glad to hear that the mod discussions of bans are archived and available, as I'm still quite confused about the specifics of what led to AGD's ban.

Where do I find the archived mod discussion info?

I'd normally question the wisdom of this archive having been made available but in the light of recent events am intrigued by its contents; it could lay a lot of ghosts (lowercase) to rest and further diffuse this unfortunate situation, a direction towards which this cathartic thread is, it seems to me, a good start along the road.

Love and Mercy indeed!

You might be right - he might not have realised it's been locked.
149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Live at the Fillmore '71 – incoming! on: April 29, 2016, 01:43:23 PM
I stopped ordering stuff there. They advertise it early, mark it as "ships immediately" (or similar…) on release date but frequently fail to ship. I suspect they only order stock if they've a large number of pre-orders, or maybe they under-price, realise their mistake and blob on the orders.

I have however always had every prepayment refunded (eventually) when I've complained about Jon-delivery.

These days I just monitor their site to look out for release news as they often list prereleases before Amazon.

I'm sure you'll get you'd cash back if you rattle their cage, but keep rattling it until you do.
150  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's musical arrangement inspirations for (primarily) Pet Sounds and Smile on: April 28, 2016, 11:46:46 PM
Heroes and Villains sounds far more like Save The Last Dance For Me by Ike and Tina Turner than RDMH. In fact it's , well extremely close.
The Indian noises from Worms are a lift from Running Bear by Johnny Preston.
Many of the arrangement ideas (not executions) are quite Charles Ives. Ives wrote many pieces about Americana and you can "see" the things the music was about. Two examples being Halloween (see Mrs O'Leary's Cow) and The Hook, The Gong and The Ladder. Central Park In The Dark is another classic visual piece of his.
If you cross Ives with Carl Stalling's cartoon music and mixed in with The Four Freshman and Spector on acid you get pretty close to Smile.
I don't know how familiar Brian was with Ives work but I can well imagine Van Dyke was at least aware of him....that whole approach of music actually sounding like what it's about is very Ives - the breezy marimba on Wind Chimes, the cello run and fuzz bass representing the train and the plink plink of the pickaxes on the railroad, jewellry percussion, babies wah wah on Child IFOTM etc..
I cannot help thinking that Van Dyke had some influence on this as it did not really occur again after Smile with notable exceptions including Diamond Head. I wish Van Dyke had had some decent input into the box set. I imagine he could still respond with interesting information if asked the right questions.

This is brilliant!!
