I noticed an album that seems to have snuck out under the radar on 4/28: Run On Whiskey by Cowboy Jack Louise.

David Marks is credited with co-producing and co-writing almost all of the album, and is said to appear on vocals, though I haven’t been able to pick him out yet. (It seems like his friend Greg Beck might be the primary performer here.)

Sure sounds like it was recorded in the ’80s/’90s—accordingly, you can find a result on copyright.gov for title “Cowboy Jack Louise” dating from 1993.

Excited to see this digital reissue but I will say I’m confused by it… Capitol is claiming to own all the material outright (doesn’t even say it’s licensed from Marilyn like the Rhino CD did). I know United Artists ended up getting absorbed into Capitol many years back so maybe Capitol is under the impression they still own the album masters instead of Marilyn? But if that were true, it wouldn’t entitle them to the 4 bonus tracks which fall outside the UA deal (unless of course Marilyn recently licensed or sold everything to Capitol).

And a sub-issue on this is that Marilyn’s right to license “Shyin’ Away”/“Fallin’ in Love” to Rhino for the 1988 CD might be disputable…  Sony seems to think themselves the rightful owner for these as they were still issuing “Shyin’ Away” in the 1980s via a compilation titled “California U.S.A.” and they licensed both sides to Ace Records for the “Pet Projects” CD in 2003. So I find it extra weird Capitol is now asserting ownership outright for those…

I happened into this interview with Nick Laird-Clowes from 2015 that I can’t remember getting discussed here before (apologies if a reshare). If you scroll to towards the end of the interview, Nick is asked about working with Brian on “Walkin’ the Line” and he has a bit to say about how that collaboration came about and his frustrating experience dealing with Landy. Not a lot of it is terribly surprising if you’ve read other accounts of what it was like working with Brian at the time, but some of it is unique and very entertaining, such as Nick’s story of Brian singing “Roll Out the Barrel” for the first 40 minutes of their session

Somewhat interesting to see from poking around on Google that the company who controls the soundtrack masters (BW Soundtrack LLC) was registered as a company in Texas on 10/6/2016. The CEO of BW Soundtrack LLC is Long Promised Road producer (and oil industry exec) Tim Headington.

The new reissue is now available on download/streaming services. The “West Coast” version of “Waves of Love” sounds very similar to one of the previously released mixes, perhaps with some new vocals? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXp2MC8IZ9I

There was talk of Honeycomb, is that confirmed?

They show a tracking session for “Honeycomb” in the movie. The only other new studio song I can remember is an “It’s OK” that’s pretty faithful to the original arrangement. The movie also uses some songs from the vault in at various points—I recall hearing “Must Be A Miracle” and “Awake.”

If anyone remembers that news story from a couple years back about Brian going back to Hawthorne High and getting his grade in music changed from an “F” to an “A,” that was apparently shot (but not used) for this documentary. At the Q & A following the Tribeca screening, Brent Wilson described it as a “painful thing to cut.” Hope some of this bonus footage finds a way out some day
